Water
rainbow Donacia aquatica (Linnaeus, 1758)
8-9 mm. Imago in June and July. They are usually kept in numerous groups at the water's edge, making short (often only a few cm) flights from one plant to another. Sometimes they float on the surface of the water and even take off from it. Larvae lead a secretive lifestyle, developing in the rhizomes and stems of aquatic plants. They have an interesting device: two hollow spikes located at the end of the body, they pierce plant tissue and breathe due to the air contained in the cavities of plants. (Ogloblin, Medvedev, 1971: "Larvae of leaf beetles")
