Water
rainbow Donacia aquatica (Linnaeus, 1758)
8-9 mm. Imago in June and July. They are usually kept in numerous groups at the water's edge, making short (often only a few cm) flights from one plant to another. Sometimes they float on the surface of the water and even take off from it. Larvae lead a secretive lifestyle, developing in the rhizomes and stems of aquatic plants. They have an interesting device: two hollow spikes located at the end of the body, they pierce plant tissue and breathe due to the air contained in the cavities of plants. (Ogloblin, Medvedev, 1971: "Larvae of leaf beetles")

Silken iris
Plateumaris sericea (Linnaeus, 1761)
The species is similar to the previous one in terms of its biotopic affinity, biology, and behavior. Adults are remarkable for sexual dimorphism: males are blue, and females are copper-red or red-purple in color.

I am looking for good pictures of rainbows in nature (especially Macroplea appendiculata). I will also be grateful for the continuation of the topic.

As it turns out, as a result of the observation of entwined pairs, Plateumaris sericea should rather be talking about aphigenic color polymorphism.
Females are copper-red, red-purple, or violet-blue.
Males - blue, purple, copper-red or red-purple (like females), blue-green, green, golden-green!
This is if they are heterosexual... wink.gif
I wonder if the beetles themselves distinguish these shades?..

IRIDESCENT WATER LILY
Donacia crassipes Fabricius, 1775

Body length 8-13 mm. The color of the top is variable: blue, purple, green, or bronze. The hind legs are twice as long as the rest; their thighs reach the top of the elytra, in males with two, in females with one prong on the inner side. European-Siberian species. It is found in late June and July, in lakes, oxbow lakes, and backwaters of slow-flowing rivers. Beetles are kept on the leaves of water lilies and pods spread out on the surface of the water. Larvae develop underwater on the petioles of leaves and roots of these plants.

Is there a photo of Donacia malinovsky Ahr.? At least from the old collection.
In our region, this species was found a couple of times, BUT there are no modern finds. Larvae on water manna (not described so far). The list of Penza rainbows (and leaf-eaters) is published by Irina Pronina (nickname on the website "Shtuchka").

Probably these are European specimens eek.gif- ours should be with a dark purple top, the sides of the elytra are golden or green umnik.gif. In the Middle Volga region, this species is unknown (we have two old finds, the material is from Shtuchka). Irina Gennadyevna, can you post a photo!? And everyone in the new field season will be looking for this rare animal jump.gif???

Malinowski is usually devoid of a bright metallic luster, more often brown or red. Only European specimens have seen this, in particular, those from the Moscow region, Pskov, and Novgorod. Series of this type were defined by Benkovsky. In addition, Malinowski is often combined with fennica and considered as a form of the latter. I didn't see any metal-painted Malinowski ones.
