Oh, what a beauty!

Wonderful little animals! In general, orthopteroids are one of my favorite insects-smile.gif.

20.08.2008 12:34, Monstr

Dear colleagues, if anyone has a photo of an interesting orthopter, please post it. Thanks!

20.08.2008 12:46, Bukashechnik

We should try to post it, something still didn't work out. I once caught a couple of locust species in Yunnan Province - one similar to Melanoplus, the other from Pyrgomorphidae. I showed it to our orthopteroid specialists, Childebaev and Kambulin, but they couldn't identify it. Maybe one of you, dear colleagues, can help?

I can't upload frown.gif

I wonder how rare/common such photogenic animals are in their homeland.

This miracle from Pseudophyllinae: Cymatomerini was noticed by Andrey only because it was accidentally poked on a fern. On the lichen-covered bark, the blacksmith is completely invisible

user posted image
Olcinia sp. (Tettigoniidae / Pseudophyllinae). I noticed this when the lichen simulator jumped over a brown leaf. There is also no chance of detection on the bark! Crocker Range National Park.

Another one from Phyllomimus sp. (Tettigoniidae: Pseudophyllinae). It spreads out so that each elytra becomes a half leaf. In order for phyllomimuses to find each other, there are signal spots on the "shoulders". Trusmady.

Chondroderella cf. borneensis (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1895)
(Tettigoniidae: Pseudophyllinae: Phyllomimini). This phyllomimus has brighter" lights". Trusmady Mountain

Cratioma cf. oculatum (Tettigoniidae: Pseudophyllinae). Trusmady

Morsimus sp. (Tettigoniidae: Pseudophyllinae). Crocker Range National Park

Dysmorpha obesa (Tettigoniidae, Phaneropterinae). This one mimics the dead leathery leaves of certain trees. For greater realism, when landing, it falls on its side (in the photo it is not a dead blacksmith, as it may seem!). Trusmady.

user posted image
This Phaneropterinae blacksmith even has pink feet that match the anthocyanin leaf spots! The pattern of elytra also serves as an excellent camouflage on a variegated background

user posted image user posted image
This blacksmith of the Pseudophyllidae assumes a threatening stance when discovered. In my opinion, imitates a spider, and for realism also "furry".

user posted image
Tympanophyllum cf. montanum (Tettigoniidae: Pseudophyllinae). This blacksmith puts on a whole mini-show. If it is disturbed, it begins to dance: lifting its belly, it rotates around its head either clockwise or counterclockwise. At the same time, it makes very plaintive "po"sounds. At the end, he abruptly flees.

This one merges with the bark

And this flightless blacksmith from the Rhaphidophoridae does not imitate anything. It hunts insects at night. Very large and with terrible spurs on its hind legs.

I will try to revive the forgotten topic with a very peculiar Malay grasshopper (the same species is listed as undistributed in the title post of the topic due to some misunderstanding) wink.gif
