Hemisodorcus (Nipponodorcus) arrowi magdeleinae Lacroix 1972

Correction.
In the Vietnamese province of Kon Tum lives ssp. lieni. It is described from T. Maeda as "Dorcus magdeleinae lieni" (Gekkan-Mushi No. 494, Apr. 2012). Valid name: Dorcus arrowi lieni, Maeda, 2012. In the north of Vietnam, the north of Thailand, in the Chinese prov. Yunnan is a subspecies of D. arrowi magdaleinae Lacroix, 1972. Updated the spelling of the subspecies name (the letter "e" has been changed to "a"). As for the generic Dorcus or Hemisodorcus-not the point, taxonomists do not agree.

Third, smaller male Odontolabis wollastoni Parry, 1864, with small mandibles. So-called "amphiodonte form"

Thank you. Can I ask for an update (document or link)?
The fact is that I need it for a case in which the message on the forum is not the basis smile.gif
P.S. It is similar not only to zin (e), but also to "biolib" in subspecies of L. maculifemoratus

This month, I observed all the lucanid species listed for New Aquitaine (exactly two)))

Lucanus cervus
The population lives in a narrow strip of predominantly oak forest, stretched along the artificial canal (Canal de Marans) in the agglomeration of the town of La Rochelle. The half-dead male was found quite late, on August 15. Females remained quite active, met 4-5 pieces on the trail, as well as many remains.

Dorcus parallelipipedus
They flew into the light, met in the forest floor and rotten wood. One female was found in a dried-up stump in exactly the form in which it is depicted in the photo; apparently, she could not get out of the chamber in which she pupated, and died after getting stuck at the exit.

Extremely interesting member of the family Apterocyclus honoluluensis (Waterhouse, 1871)

It is one of five species of the Lucanid genus endemic to Hawaii.
It is probably one of two species (along with Apterocyclus munroi Sharp, 1908) that are currently found in nature.

~16 mm

the most pleasant and late find of this season

Ceruchus niger (BOUCHER & KRAL, 1997).

19 mm.

China, Yunnan prov., Lijiang, Yulong Naxi autonomous county, mt. Yulong, E slope, h. ~3200 m.
26/08/19
under a piece of wood (Picea asperata)

Mount Yulong and its neighboring Hub are among several places in Yunnan where the view is known; other points are located nearby - in Weixi, Bingchuan, and in the border areas of Sichuan Muli County and Liangshan Yi District (one point each). Among the Chinese ceruchus, this species has perhaps the widest range - the rest, as a rule, are known from one or two mountains.

The forest is dominated by Picea asperata (endemic to China), as well as a few broad-leaved and shrubs. In the surveyed area, only the marked log was inhabited, where there were many remains of females and small males. The beetles apparently moved away in late July / early August.

UPD [1]: edited, added a photo with our C. crysomelinus for comparison and a map with most of the known points.

UPD [2]: I found this beetle unusual from the very beginning, since it was different from the two (closely related) species known from this locality - C. niger and C. reginae (the second variant was almost immediately discarded, since this species does not have a ventral prong on the mandibles).
When I got the chance, I went through the keys for Rod. Everything came down to the atypical shape of the mandibles - it was quite different from the photo copies of C. niger-a variant that was suitable (almost) for all keys. Below I attach a photo comparison, all three beetles are the same size (mine is now defined exactly, and not "presumably").
Recently, I turned to one of the authors of the Stag beetles of China series and the latest revision of the genus Ceruchus (contained in part three), a very friendly person, Mr. Chen Chang-Chin, who kindly agreed to help me with the definition and clarified a couple of points.
In the end, my doubts were fully justified - Chen noted that in his collection, among the numerous Ceruchus niger series, there are only two specimens that are close to mine, but not completely similar (they have almost as well developed dorsal and ventral mandible teeth at the same time).
And of course, I, as an amateur, was very pleased to hear from a specialist that this is, as he put it, "very special specimen" - a rare variation))

Accordingly, he confirmed my original definition.
Here is such a zhemuchuzhinka in the collection!

In the dry and, as it seemed to me, "distant" north for this species, I unexpectedly met a female Prosopocoilus astacoides (Hope, 1840). But the range of the species is much wider than I thought)

China, NE Sichuan, Aba pref., near the border with Gansu Province, August 2019;

Previously, I saw a couple of times only brood beetles of this species.
At first I marked it as a subspecies of blanchardi , but now I still have some doubts.

Right pair of Ceruchus lignarius nodai (Fujita, 1987)

Japan, Tokushima prefecture, Mt. Akaboshi, 2014

As for me, the most entertaining subspecies. On average, it is less than both nominative (which sometimes fatten up to 21 mm) and C. l. monticola. It is found farther south than others, in Kyushu and Shikoku.

On the left, a small form of Ceruchus lignarius monticola (Nakane, 1978)

Dear Honza, there is an inaccuracy in your selection of photos of lucanids from 08.10.2015.
"Lucanus formosus Didier, 1925" is actually Lucanus tsukamotoi Nagai, 2002.
Below is a scan of the page with the image of the L. formosus series (=L. cyclommatoides Didier, 1928) from the Japanese magazine Gekkan-Mushi.

There is also a problem with L. fairmairei.

This is at least a very isolated point from their habitats, on the other hand, recently, a lot of similar material from those parts, recently disassembled my own (though from Gaoligongshan-a) and so far identified them as prossi.
