Apotomopterus is the largest subgenus. More than 120 described species, the vast majority of which live in central and southern China. Isolated species live in the border areas with China – northern Vietnam, northern Laos and Burma. Due to the closure of China in a relatively recent period of history, the active study of the subgenus Apotomopterus began in the 90s of the last century and new species and subspecies are still being described. Representatives of Apotomopterus have morphological features that can be considered as primitive. This is not a thickened head, short mandibles, weakly expanded apical segments of all tentacles, often a heart-shaped pronotum, a clear pre-apical notch in females, a tertiary sculpture consisting of 16 identical intervals, of which the primary ones are interrupted by small primary pits. Most of the species are large and very large beetles.
