Yes, parasites. so the caterpillar was already infected before you put it in the container. By the way, you can collect them and put them in jars with sand or earth and see who comes out. get to know your enemy by sight wink.gif

67. ?

I went to the local zoo with my guests. I've been there many times before. Lemurs, turtles, and crocodiles. In general, all sorts of garbage. And also in a pathetic performance.

But this time I found caterpillars. Roisterer. Length 4 cm. Now everyone is already pupated. And four in pairs (there were five of them in total). Photos of the pupae later - I don't want to disturb you.

As especially for the women's holiday on March 8, I got a Vixen. That is, the hawk moth is a Shrew. It is also under No. 63 in the form of a caterpillar.

Euchloron megaera.

"Vixen — in ancient Greek mythology, the most terrible of the three Erinia, the goddesses of vengeance, the daughter of Erebus and Nyukta. The personification of envy and anger. She was depicted as a terrible woman with snakes for her hair, with bared teeth and a whip in her hands."

By the way, I expect the second Vixen to come out tonight. This one had a green caterpillar. Let's see how butterflies differ.

I don't know which ones live in Madagascar, but they are Manduca or their closest relatives, butterflies do not have the brightest appearance, but a very long proboscis. In the pupa, it lags behind the body like the handle of a jug.
It seems that soon all the hawk moth birds of Madagascar will gather at Ilya's house, wondering what else to lay their eggs on.

Thank you for your kind words!
I specifically started planting different plants, as the limit of "grape" hawkmoth apparently exhausted itself.
I'm waiting for someone to visit who will teach me how to straighten them (while they live in the freezer) - then I will show the full cycle.

ps. I read that they "pupate in the soil" - do you need to fill the container with earth?

there is only one caterpillar without a horn, who knows what the thread is from and how often it occurs?

16.03.2014 21:01, dim-va

You can land a little, you can just sketch the foliage, it doesn't matter. The horn may be missing for various reasons. Badly faded. Or ill. Or someone chewed it off - pecked it off. Although this is not such a frequent occurrence. The development of the butterfly is not affected.
By the way, the caterpillars of this group (Manduca and relatives) are very fond of tobacco plants and nightshade plants in general, so you can also walk around the tobacco plantation at your leisure.

Now I looked at the list, it turns out that there are no Manducas in Madagascar. Well, then from relatives-Coelonia most likely.
And on the sweet potato, another species lives, which is also found here ))))

I poured two centimeters of wood shavings into the container. It seems to have calmed down, the leaves are bursting again.

18.03.2014 21:08, El Cazador

Ilya, I would advise you to make the soil deeper. Such 10-15 centimeters, some species are buried quite deep. Well, do not forget to moisten the soil/sawdust, just a little.

68: Probably Anax imperator. The female. There, however, there is still a similar endemic Anax tumorifer, but IMHO it is still a little different.

The hornless one started pupaing up yesterday. Laps 10 on the container screwed in a circle without stopping. Chas like calmed down.

I poured a little water - thanks for the tip.

Tonight I expect a massive "gypsy girl with an exit" number 67. I thought that yesterday they would appear - they turned very dark.

I would like to look at her pupa-so outwardly, she looks very much like an oleander caterpillar, but without eye spots on her chest. I wonder what will hatch.

"Faune de Madagascar" by P Griveaud is a rare children's book.
I wonder what kind of print run it was published in, and is it really possible to find and buy it now?

20.03.2014 18:52, AGG

it's probably not realistic to buy it (prescription+small print run due to the specifics), but it should be online in theory. a lot of links, but it is not clear that they want frown.gifto try to move your pet so that the rear wings are visible, maybe D'Abrera will be able to identify it. Unfortunately, the Flora and Fauna library is not currently available - there is a D'Abrera on Hawkmoth

You can buy, and it is quite inexpensive, 31 pounds - if you dial in google.de the name of the book, immediately pop up offers for sale. From there I took (((Only I didn't find a digitized version.

I need to look for a book, and I'll give my employees a task. If it was published in Madagascar, then there is a high probability that some copies are still here. So you can buy them.

Tomorrow they will be released (I hope) 2 more of the same hawk moth. So I will "force" them to pose in full. There wasn't enough time today.

I found a "pupa"-a larva - in the Kirindi National Park. It was attached to a tree. At home, I started looking at it, and it moves - it vibrates very noticeably. A wasp?

I couldn't stand it, I picked up the sand dwelling in the photo above. There, to my surprise, I found a chrysalis:

user posted image

How does the caterpillar construct such a structure? It turns out that she weaves a sticky cocoon on the ground, rolls it in the sand, then drags it to a tree (1.90 m) and attaches it there. Then it climbs into the cocoon, becomes clogged and pupates? Miracles!

We'll wait for the butterfly.
