Regarding three-dimensional images of insects for identification and illustrated atlases, I just posted several opuses on the site:

Good idea. I have a stereo attachment - I'll try it with a digital camera.

The topic is really interesting. Take a look here: http://www.ixbt.com/digimage/stereocam.shtml
On the Macro Club's website, I created a special branch dedicated to various methods of stereo photography http://macroclub.ru/club/viewtopic.php?p=6824#6824 You can discuss it more specifically.

By the way, check out more here, a macrophotographer's dream http://www.stereoscopy.com/3dconcepts/camera.html

Yes, stereo photography is a good alternative to conventional photography, but given the current pace of technological progress, it seems that the future is still in three-dimensional modeling. It is possible that in the future there will be such devices that, like the usual camera, will take pictures of objects, eventually giving the user a three-dimensional virtual copy of the object. Now it is perceived as fiction, but once upon a time photography was just as fantastic.

Yes, of course, I believe that too, but... The usual stereo photo appeared in the middle of the XIX century, slowly developed until the middle of the XX century and that's it! From the middle of the twentieth century to the present, nothing so new has been invented (stereo pairs, anaglyphs, rasters, etc. are well - known old ones). And this is not only here, but also abroad. Until now, even in the United States and Japan, they shoot sereofoto, including on film, and even on our Satellite!!! Undoubtedly, there are trends to pair digital cameras, there is even one digital soap dish with 3D capability. And no more. Unfortunately, stereo photography is not rapidly developing. But I consider it wrong NOT to use stereoscopy as one of the methods that allow, for example, in science to get an idea of the third dimension.
