You can go to the bookstore and look at the shelves with textbooks on ecology. You'll see all sorts of names... Full of extreme sports. I won't try to reproduce it from memory, something like "Ecology of Business", "Ecology in Politics", "Ecology of Thoughts", etc.

The initial classical definition of this word is long gone. The problem is not even that we have moved away from the classical definition - after all, everything in this world is changing, and this is normal. As far as I can tell, there is no new generally accepted one. Everyone understands and invents what ecology is, to the best of their imagination. However, fashion. Eco-friendly nanotechnologies, plin...

In general, the topic does not seem to be about this.

That's for sure! Although the topic itself, in my opinion, has exhausted itself. They said, in my opinion, everything they wanted.

Just this topic is endless. You and I will die, and the topic will live on and be filled with new stories wink.gif

What I didn't like about this topic was that entomologists are obviously permeated with defeatist sentiments and are prepared in advance for the fact that their occupation will be perceived as eccentricity. You need to look at others confidently and with a deep conviction that it is others, everyone except you, who are doing all sorts of nonsense wink.gif

I support you, the topic is endless, because an infinite number of options for responding to entomologists can be found among ordinary people, both positive and negative.
The fact is that mostly when people are praised for this activity-the stories are not interesting, do not write: "I was once that, once that was praised.". But funny are usually just negative reactions or reactions with misunderstandings, although the opposite is the case.
I don't think we even remembered half of our stories, so we haven't exhausted tongue.gifthem yet

on the topic of environmentalists.
And it also happens that an ecologist considers himself a berk, far from any biological discipline, including the one that will accuse you of predatory collection of insects and extermination of all living things. Even the speech of such a person can be easily imagined: "And so the whole ecology was polluted, even you with your net!"

I remember such a case. In 1995, we were on an expedition to the South. In the Urals. The nearest town is 10 km away. But there was a summer cow farm nearby. Literally on the 2nd day, a shepherd approaches (the herd was grazing nearby on the slopes). Well, the shepherd, and the shepherd, in appearance-education of 5 classes. I thought: "well, now it will be banal to float-who are we catching, why, what is the use of this?". And he said hello and said, " entomologists, I take it?"
My jaw dropped. The next sentence was equally significant: "well, yes, we have good places, but there are interesting moths-I think they are called bears." When the shock passed, it turned out that just a month before us, other entomologists worked at this place (from memory - from Chelyabinsk).
We collected bear caterpillars. So his replacement, also a shepherd, sometimes showed us a butterfly or a beetle from a matchbox and said: "I also collect insects." This is the kind of influence that entomologists sometimes have on others. lol.gif

I have another question on the topic. The attitude of ordinary people is clear, but what is the attitude of entomologists among themselves? There are such colleagues come across-all pathos and arrogance. Sometimes you ask a question, and you "well, even at school they pass it". Sadly. We need to consolidate!

And this is another topic: snobbery in entomology. Professional and personal relationships are intertwined here. The attitude of the average person to entomologists throughout the Russian Federation is very similar, both in Moscow and in Chita. Colleagues are different: Moscow – St. Petersburg-province are three different" levels " of relations.

Ha, and how does it feel to hear a professor of botany, DBN , who is professionally engaged in the protection of plant biocenoses, reproach for overfishing butterflies? It was specifically about Apollo, 3 specimens were caughtsmile.gif, and in addition, it was refused to report on the places of growth of the crested bird in this area, so that mnemosyne would not catch it either...

Okay, let's move away from defeatist sentiments.
When I was younger (about 10 years ago) in conversations with girls, I always told them that I collect insects. Usually the girls show the most intense interest. And on the offer to go to my house and see the collection, girls often agreed. By the way, some people were seriously interested in the collection....
Two friends from that carefree time, even becoming solid family women, still collect insects for me....

And for me, fishermen (as they say, ordinary hard workers who accidentally found out that I was doing all sorts of dirty things) brought sea cockroaches after trips for smelt-maybe they will come in handy? It's not that bad.

In January of this year, some people who care for animal freedom entered the Moscow State University vivarium and released cockroaches, snails, rats, etc. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the information, but a video appeared on the Internet in which " a happy rat runs through the snow.."
At the biofac, workshops were disrupted...

Who knows, maybe one hour of freedom is worth a lifetime spent in a cage? Read the classics! wink.gif

This is some kind of nonsense for us, and in general anything can have a price, and a decent rat to become a victim of an experiment is much more honorable than running through the snow like a fool lol.gif

Still, the main thing is understanding your loved ones. At Jacobson's (the most famous coleopterist), the wife was so incomprehensible about her husband's work that he preferred to spend the night at work. There, after finishing the well-known determinant of beetles, he committed suicide...

What a fucking bitch...

And you need to think about who you're marrying! Surely she was a typical bitch from the very beginning, and not after the wedding she went from white and fluffy to this state! This has always surprised me in men who choose this type of women.

Then there was no institution of civil marriage, usually the husband saw the bride only in the presence of her relatives. The divorce wasn't easy, either.

In the case of Jacobson, everything was just far from decorous and noble with the first date during the matchmaking. He just wanted to play saving a "drowning soul" at a time when it was necessary to look for someone who shared his views and interests. In general, for people who are passionate about science, happiness in family life is possible either with the support of your other half, or with her non-interference (and not in an effort to make you an average philistine). People should be equal in mental development and have the same system of moral values. Otherwise, the family will not work.

Oddly enough, many other entomologists of the time had very ordinary wives. The main thing is not intelligence, but feminine kindness and care. Even a stupid but kind wife is better than a smart and calculating bitch...

I remembered for some reason the sad fate of another famous zoologist (though not an entomologist) - V. O. Kovalevsky...

No one talks about prudence at all. At the expense of the mind of many of my familiar bitches, I would also argue. There is rather the principle of life - a bad head does not give rest to your feet. Bitchiness is one of the manifestations of stupidity. And the mind, in my opinion, just lies in creating the conditions for your second half to achieve your goal, and not nag it with your constant quirks about fur coats, trousers, etc.
I wonder what "ordinary wife" means?

Since the topic has gone so far : about the attitude of not only the crowd, but also the closest half , I can add from myself that my wife is generally loyal to my hobby. More than once we go to nature together.
But that's just sometimes very jealous sometimes . They say I pay more attention to "cockroaches" than to her.
Well, and sarcastically so teases when I'm going on another hike

We just have different experiences-men and women. I, for one, don't know anything about husbands. Among my colleagues, there are quite a few smart people who believe that their intelligence and beauty need a decent frame. And they are really talented scientists, but Sofia Kovalevskaya also liked to dress well (and so her husband left science).

In those days, it was difficult to find a woman in Russia who knew something about entomology. German professors had wives whose slogan was the standard German trio: Kinder, Kueche, Kirche. They didn't even get involved in science. Yakobson read Dostoevsky and believed that there were Sonya Marmeladovs in the world... But what is good for a Russian is death for a German... Now, of course, everything is different, you can get a divorce without any problems, and then even Mendeleev got a divorce only when he agreed to 100% of alimony (i.e., he gave the entire salary).
