What places and when to go, I will not say, because I deal with beetles and butterflies can incorrectly orient.
The population of BH is either neutral or friendly. But as elsewhere, young individuals can pose a problem. It's best to keep the camp a secret from the kids.
Another problem is the language. Many people do not speak Russian or speak in such a way that it would be better to keep silent. Therefore, it is not superfluous to get a local travel companion or at least phrasebooks. Transport is not poorly developed, there are minibuses, buses, and taxis of course. Near the border, the population is a little sick of spy paranoia, so it is possible to check documents and in general it is better to have some kind of paper explaining what this infidel is doing here. It is better not to go into the Hyrkan Nature Reserve - it is functioning and patrolled, and Aliev's dacha is also nearby smile.gif.
It should be borne in mind that in Zuvant since the beginning of June it is quite dry and there are serious problems with water.

A friend of mine, an entomologist, went to Talysh a couple of years ago. It seems that there were no special problems, except with local roads, which are dying out there as a species. And I brought some interesting insects.

from Lenkoran to Lerik, the road is beautiful, and to Yardimla, too. In distant villages, but gloomy. But no more than we have in the North Caucasus.

As I understand it, it is better not to go to the Astara region because of the proximity of the border. Nature reserve in Lerik district, so it is better to go to Yardamly???

the reserve occupies only a very small part of the Leriksky districtsmile.gif. There are many pleasant places near Lenkoran: Apo village, Dashtatyuk, Aurora, Alekseevka. Near Lerik and somewhere halfway to it (Peshtatyuk). And of course Gosmalyan. In Pirasora, people are curious, and even in Gosmalyan they can ask - the border is close. In Yardimli district, I collected in Kyurekchi, a very good place.

I even described a new species from Aurora. I think it should be quite good in Azerbaijan. There is almost no crime there, just a normal Islamic country. I have heard reviews from 3 people they are very good

Hi everyone, I want to share my trips to Azerbaijan. The first trip was by car in mid-May 2009. I drove from Zhukovsky through Voronezh, stopped for the night in the Rostov region, and at the same time caught butterflies in the light(mostly Hebe bears arrived). Then there were big extortions in Dagestan (I do not advise anyone to go to Dagestan, and even more so by car). Several times I wanted to turn around and quickly get away from there, but the childhood dream of seeing Christophe with my own eyes still held the steering wheel and here I am in Magramkent (border town of SF). As always, I pass the Russian-Azerbaijani gimoroy control and here I am on the land of endemics. Travel through Azerbaijan was very calm, you can immediately see abroad. The road is very good, the police are friendly, the drivers drive calmly(not like in Dagestan, my car at a speed of 120 km, the Gazelle overtook “like a standing car”, not to mention cars).
And now, having overcome the Shirvan steppe, the long-awaited Talysh (from Zhukovsky to Lenkoran 2500km) appeared in the haze. I was going there on the recommendation of a friend of Talysh. After a heartfelt meeting, I immediately rush to Girkan (actually Khir Kan, which means Houses in the fog in Talysh). I put the screen right in the national park not far from the village of Dashtatyuk, as always, the locals are the first to flock, but I think I know Talysh and all the misunderstandings are settled, we are happily photographed and everyone goes home after dark. Finally, I am left alone with the prehistoric forest. Christophe didn't have to wait long; she arrived about an hour later (she burst into the lamp, flapping her black wings furiously). Her age, by the way, was not very friendly, three specimens arrived, and she flew only until midnight (after midnight it is not possible to catch her, she did not appear at any fishing point, I observed the same picture with her sister (Br. Wallich) from Southeast Asia). The best point was the 30th kilometer of the Lenkoran-Lerik highway, where it flew in a heap. You can really say that the butterfly is quite rare, because its density varies from one specimen. up to a maximum of ten per night. And if you see how the relict forest is being cut down, then I think it has about ten years left before complete destruction (The forest is being cut down in the reserve itself and cattle are being grazed godlessly). There are security guards patrolling in the National Park, and I could decide to catch insects with a few tens of manats (one hundred pupaars and 80 manats), but I recommend not to catch them there. here you can find good places outside the reserve and fish for free. For night fishing, I will note the 30th km of the Lenkoran – Lerik highway (There are many exits along the route, but the road through the mountains is bad, it is better to go by UAZ), the 20th km of the Lenkoran-Yardimly highway (near the waterfall), the village of Mistong (near Gasmalyan, this point is in the mountains, Kristofa is not there, but there are Mosquitoes, Big euphorbia br., Kinderman, scoops, bears. Mosquitoes fly from April to June inclusive, but fresh only until mid-May. Do not forget to stock up on warm clothes and patience it is very cold in the mountains (Mosquitoes arrived at a temperature of 10 g. by morning, it fell to 6 g. but oddly enough, the butterflies flew together even in this cold). I think that the golden mean for the trip will be the 20th of May and a little capture of June (in June you can catch Alexandra, three types of galatea, intnresny satyrs). The second time I flew by plane was at the end of May. The second time was more productive at night I captured Kristof Pravda in the lowlands (in the vicinity of Lenkoran), hawkmoth, subspecies of Hebe, Rural, Guerra, Dominula, grim owl, etc., during the day for Gasmalyan Galatea, zheltushki, satyr, generally memories for a whole year. The only thing is that the expenses turned out to be more than for Thailand (Plane ticket 15 tr, car rental for a fee of 50 pupaars a day without driver's food, guide help (without a guide I do not recommend Russian language no one knows and the land is private everywhere besides people are overly curious) 40 pupaars a day, plus food, plus treats for the hospitable Azerbaijani people, in general, 10 days in Azerbaijan cost me 35 thousand rubles. no flight required. But what are these pieces of paper compared to a child's dream?. So, which way: by car or plane, choose for yourself.
PS / I want to inform you that in May of this year, I was looking for another sister of Christofa-Lederer in Abkhazia. I reached the border with Georgia, but alas, there is a forest(and even what), there is an ash tree, but there is no butterfly.Just arrived from Laos, Wallich in my pocket(the density is also not high, a maximum of three copies per dot). Plans include a trip to Turkish Kurdistan for Lederer-slaughterhouse.
Next year I'm going to Nakhichevan, I can invite someone. Our destination is the Southern foothills of Zangezur.
Photos in order present. I forgot to tell you about Talysh tea, I didn't drink such tea anywhere else. I highly recommend it, especially when leaving Lerik, if you go to Gasmalyan. And another butterfly in Talysh (lyulyapar) in Azerbaijani (chaparak). I wish you a successful trip. Rest assured, Talysh will envelop you in its fog, and if you have not been, then by all means become a fan of it.

Romyald, can you specify where you caught Hebe in the Rostov region?smile.gif

Hello adetkov.I can't remember the exact fishing spot, but I'll try to give you the coordinates. Highway E 115, passed Millerovo, ran out of gas, I decided to refuel (the gas station in the direction of movement was on the right), the Northern Donets did not move the gas station was before the bridge. Gebu collected from the asphalt at this gas station in the daytime (they were in a mass and hid in different crevices, there were a lot of crushed ones). At night, I fished under the d. Mikhailov, only one arrived. The exact date is May 16, 2009.
At the same time, I'll show you pictures of the bears I caught. The Geba that is in the upper left corner just from there, at the bottom Talysh (it is found there everywhere from the mountainous area to Gasmalyan and Yardymly, but not often. The usual Hebe is also there.) Next, pay attention to the dominula, it is also caught in Talysh, slightly different from our Moscow region. Hera is generally a giant there, if compared with the Black Sea or Volga regions, and even brighter. Dominula is rare everywhere, it is also rare in Talysh(it was caught on the 20th km of the Lenkoran Lerik highway), Hera is found only behind Lerik (it likes dry rocks and low-growing shrubs, it hides there during the day). In the upper-right corner of medv. rural from Talysh (all yellow and different from our Russian drawing), under it a copy from Uryupinsk (the upper spots are more outlined and white), under it an ex. from Talysh (on the lower wings there are red spots at the corners, although, in general, the pattern coincides with the classical one).
