Encyclopedia of Life (eng. The Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) is an online encyclopedia containing information about all biological species, created jointly by various specialists. In the encyclopedia, you can post separate articles for each known type (there are about 2 million of them), which will contain video materials, sound, images, graphics, and text information.

As part of the project, information about animals, plants, and fungi will first be collected in a single database. Then data on micro-organisms will be added to the catalog, and later-on fossil biological species.
One of the priority tasks of the project is to make the resource accessible to all people regardless of language and cultural differences, for which it is planned to translate the encyclopedia into various languages in cooperation with individuals and organizations around the world.

The project is designed for ten years and is estimated at 110.5 million US pupaars. The first grants were provided by two American organizations: $ 10 million was provided by the MacArthur Foundation, and $ 2.5 million was provided by the Alfred Sloan Foundation.
For more information, see in wikipedia.

An extremely interesting project. In fact, for the first time in the history of mankind, a common database (catalog) is being created for the entire organic world. If someone has already encountered this organization, please tell us how you can participate in this global business? And I would just like to hear your opinion on this.

Although there is a Russian language, video tours (about how to use it) are only in English.

And in general, if it was taken up in America, the project will be completed no matter how huge it is!

It is sad, but even now the Russian scientific community is not able to even comprehend this project. In general, as far as I can see, an extremely useful fruit will grow out of all this in the future, a sort of "Super-Distributor of the organic world", where everyone can find any species and get acquainted with its biology.

To make the project a success, you need to involve almost all entomologists-taxonomists of the world, because for many narrow groups one or several specialists, and without their participation, the database will be incomplete or inadequate. And there are a bunch of taxa whose status is unclear because they were not reviewed. What should I do with them? And the biology of not all species has yet been studied. The idea is very good, but extremely difficult in terms of creating a high-quality resource. At the moment, we can only lay the foundation, which will then become more concrete over the course of decades.

I subscribe to every word you say. The fact that this work is simply huge, there is no doubt about it - the stated financial figures are enough for the implementation of this project. The only shame is that our scientific cadres, which are not inferior to the West, are again behind the rest of the planet. I won't ask anyone (although I haven't asked everyone). No one knows anything about this. And there is enough work for everyone.

Moreover, this project is comparable in its significance for the future of humanity to another epochal project being implemented in our time.

In the Svalbard village of Longyearbyen, a world bank is being created under the auspices of the United Nations-a repository of planting material for all agricultural plants existing in the world. This vault contains a seed bank of both domestic and wild plants, designed to survive even in a nuclear war. Each country will get its own compartment in this plant bank. On June 19, 2006, the Prime Ministers of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland took part in the solemn laying of the foundation stone. The storage facilities will be located at a depth of 300 meters, in the abandoned coal mines of Svalbard, reinforced with reinforced concrete floors up to 1 meter thick. The bank will be equipped with explosion-proof doors and airlocks. The safety of materials will be ensured by refrigeration units that can run on local coal, as well as permafrost. Seeds are planned to be stored wrapped in aluminum foil at a temperature of -20 to -30 °C. Svalbard was chosen for the seed bank because of permafrost and low tectonic activity in the archipelago area.

Well, FTOR, you're not as straightforward as I thought (with cockroaches).

A good confirmation that it is better to think for yourself, without cockroaches wink.gif)))))))

Frankly speaking, the implementation of this project requires the participation of most of the world's specialists. Especially when it comes to entomology. Well, here's an example: One Altai entomologist described several newly discovered insects. Who better than he will take and correctly describe the type specimens available to him, justify their difference from similar taxa, etc. In general, there is a lot of work, and you Russian entomologists show criminal passivity. I reproach you with this.

FTOR, come on, utopia is everything. The Altai entomologist will demand money for his priceless pictures and texts, the rest-who can think for three, who can barely make ends meet, who will say - I don't participate in bourgeois projects, etc.

It is sad. But despite all this, I still suggest creating a working group among us with the aim of writing a letter to this organization in order to actively participate in its work. We are writing a collective letter, where we offer our help in preparing some sections of the catalog. We don't ask for money - at least let them pay for our collective trip to the Far East in a crowd. The main thing is to motivate these bourgeois people. After all, understand that apart from Russian specialists, very few people know our regiolny and therefore the bourgeoisie will be interested!!! I am waiting for your active responses-advice-comments-epithets-defirambs-remarks!

RSA, will they sponsor other people's drinking parties, chass smile.gif

About "large-scale projects", here I came across interesting video, I advise you to see if anyone will regret it, and then read the comments that "our people" wrote.
I think that, basically, everything is clear. This is not the EU, or America, or even the USSR, to waste time on stuff like the tree of life. Sailed, however )

This- this is our wink.gif

Yeah, they'll pay for it... For Anglo-Saxons, there is no such territory as Russia. I've seen their Encyclopedia of the Wonders of the World. Almost half were listed in the States. There were many of them in Europe, South America, and Africa... In Russia - only Lena Pillars! I wrote to them: "But what about Lake Baikal, the Caspian Sea, the volcanoes of Kamchatka, Altai?.." I'm still waiting for a response.

To the "Anglo-Saxon theme" (see above). It might be easier. They wrote the book for American readers, not thinking that it would be reprinted in Russia... And even thinking. The Russians will reissue it anyway. Because this is a ready-made publication - just pay the owners of the rights money, and in circulation! And everything will sell out. The Russian reader likes to "read about everything", but what is there about Russia in half a word, will not be offended - we usually curse it and do not consider it the best place to live... Another thing is the publication of the book in the United States. Americans, on the other hand, do not read about countries that they have not visited and are unlikely to be able to see - which are "on the far side of the Moon." This is Russia. Everything is simple. Our revered Western rationalism. And they will also allocate money for the development of the Encyclopedia of Life. Russian-in the last place. Don't hesitate.

I participate in EOL, it turned out very simply. The program is based on a systematic list of your group. If you simply register on the EOL website, your rights are limited to comments or uploading images. You can't change or add to the name tree. But if, for example, you register your site in a cluster lifedesks.org, and make a tree there, then it can be co-opted into EOL using a special function, and you will be its moderator.
The screenshot below shows that the author's pages participating in EOL are marked with a green circle.
