Trip to Buryatia

Community and ForumTravel and expeditionsTrip to Buryatia

Sergey Didenko, 16.07.2012 8:21

I decided to create a separate topic for convenience, where we will cover the butterfly hunt in Buryatia in more detail.
We returned from a two-week trip to Buryatia. A well-coordinated group of me, Mikhail, Viktor and Vadim tried to get interesting bears. Attempts were in vain, obviously a bear finder is needed.
Our route passed through the following localities: Irkutsk-Slyudyanka-Mondy-Slyudyanka-Gusinoozersk-Udunga-Tosh-Ulan-Ude. The period is from 01 to 14 July.
The first half of the trip took place in the vicinity of the village of Mondy, near the border with Mongolia. Half the time it rained in the Mondes, but when the sun crept out, life in the mountains came to life, a lot of phoebes, stubik, checkers, mother-of-pearl, pigeons and marigolds appeared. In general, the variety of daytime views in Mondes was impressive.

Then our route ran with a visit to the naturalist in Slyudyanka, a stop on Lake Baikal, along the Selenga, through Gusinoozersk to Udunga. Here the weather "pleased" with the 30-degree heat, the capture of kindermani, Cecilia, Hyles costat, some briseids and aurors. A separate topic is the store in Udung. Or rather, its assortment - a bottle of vodka and two bags of wine-that's all that was on the counter in the store, which we searched for an hour in 50 houses of this village. A lot of cribriaries in the light and striat/bipunctate in the daytime, interesting barbels (EVEN a FEMALE TROGOSOMA CAME TO LIGHT), an interesting green goldfish, a lot of small black dorcas and one larger striped one, very fast black horses and a lot of cuckoos.
Well, it all ended in Ulan-Ude, in the excellent beer restaurant Bir-House.

it is difficult, of course, to determine from such photos.But I think that Pachyta lamed L is circled in red -an interesting bug, but next to the male Pachyta lies Agapanthia pilicornis, the whiskers are kind of red.So Dmitrich is partly right..... smile.gif

Both amurensis collected on wormwood, and pilikornis sat on a tall plant (not wormwood, or rather I will not say in botany is not strong) in a water meadow near the Temnik River. Viktor has collected two more similar agapantias, and tomorrow he should post photos.

Experts, and whose caterpillar is in the photo IMG_1782.JPG ? It was caught in a high swamp at an altitude of about 2000 m, unfortunately, not on a forage plant, but on a log. The size is about 3 cm. It looks like some kind of bear, but the timing...

18.07.2012 17:58, mikee

Not a detailed report, but sketches of the trip... Photos (mine and, I hope, Victor's) will be available later.
1. we went mainly for the bears, so the route included both the highlands (Mondy) and the middle mountains (southern spurs of Khamar-Daban). Places were deliberately chosen deaf. We drove Vadim's car (Krasnoyarsk) - a low station wagon, which was not pleasant on the country roads of Central Buryatia. Caught in the light, two screens. In Mondes-stationary electricity + generator, which died on the second night. I had to fix it by replacing the capacitor of the starting winding, thank God, it was found in the reserves of the owners of the house in the mountains. Then we bought a second generator in Slyudyanka, twice smaller and lighter, but at 950 watts. Then we used both generators.
2. Monds were pleased with a full set of landscapes: mountain steppe in the village itself, further up larch park forests, mixed forests up to heights of 1700-1800, subalpine with upper swamps and mountain tundra on the slope, alpine meadows at an altitude of 2300-2400 and bare rocks above 2500. In some places, there are still snowballs, and even at the bottom near the village. The weather was not particularly pleasant, in addition to the general delay in summer, there was also a constant shift. In fact, we completely lost a couple of days due to rain, and the rest of the time the sun was a rare guest. And in neighboring (15 km) Mongolia, visually, it was much better. The greatest variety of different checkers and small mother-of-pearl. There are a lot of different flowers on which the whole entomofauna feeds.
3. The final destination of the trip is D. Udunga-struck us all. Some kind of "Zero" City. Half-abandoned, people and the store were searched for half an hour among 50 houses and 3 streets. The 24-hour store turned out to be just a private house, with only two bags of wine and a bottle of vodka on the shelves... The promised delivery in three days did not take place. In the neighboring (6 km) village of Ust-Urma, the Cooperative store is open from 10 to 18 with a lunch break from 12 to 15... On the locked door there is an inscription " Shop is closed. She's gone.". But the landscapes after Udunga in the direction of Taiga - charming and stunning water meadow along the river.Udunga. a fantastic blend of thyme, mint and honey. There are almost no larch trees on the slopes, only pine trees. And everywhere-traces of long-standing and recent grassroots fires, which seems to have had a bad effect on the diversity of butterfly species.
4. People everywhere are not very friendly, but quite sane and not annoying. But in Tuva, where Vadim krayeshko visited before our trip, he was immediately driven to catch butterflies.
5. We spent two nights in hotels (on Lake Baikal and in Ulan-Ude). This is a separate topic... On Lake Baikal, opposite the Russian Railways hotel "Kultushnaya" (backwoods among the swamps) - "round-the-clock "stall " Casket" (the saleswoman lives nearby in an ordinary tent, cooks her own food on the fire) accepts Visa and MasterCard credit cards !!! In any case, it is written so, they did not dare to try smile.gifit, and this is even with a bad cellular connection. They probably use Russian Railways ' service lines?
Buryatia Hotel in Ulan-Ude... Once upon a time, under the owls. the price must have been decent. I stay in it for the third time (in different years), the reception is on the 5th (!) floor, at the entrance to the hotel there is an inscription "Entrance is strictly upon presentation of identity documents or a business card" lol.gifWhen registering, I remember the lack of hot water on my last visit and receive assurances that everything is in order now. And it's really fine: hot water is running from both taps in the room.
6. Entomology Riddles:
- Mondy, highlands (1700), very late summer.. Simultaneously fly P. phoebe and D. eversmanni, D. shtubbendorfi, Platarctia atropurpurea and A. caja ! At the same time, we did not find kaya much further south or lower, nor did we find A. flavia. In all reference books, Kaya sayana should fly in early August...
- break-up on the road to Udungu, intermediate overnight stay. Two screens at a distance of 300 meters and 20 meters in height. Cold wind from the peaks of Khamar-Daban. On the top screen during the night - three copies of the new hawk moth Hyles costata and one tatarinovi. Nothing on the bottom one. Three days later, same decay, two screens together 100m higher (500m downhill), same cold wind. And not a single H. costata, for which, in fact, they stopped by. In the mass only bedstraw plants. And therefore fantastic conjectures about a flock of migratory hawks, but where and where did they migrate from? Or an area with a diameter of no more than 300 meters? smile.gif
7. Impressions:
- hefty red-winged ratchet fillies that fly with the wind during the day, but at sunset in the mass and soar for a long time in the air;
- massive black grasshoppers (there is a photo of Viktor), hotly called the ever-memorable "fatties" smile.gif
- konoplevidnaya nettle, growing everywhere, the usual nettle resembles weakly, but burning even through tight pants;
- bites everything that can only bite, including the nymph of a large grasshopper;
- the uniqueness and randomness of finds of the desired species of bears (kindermani, caecilia, quinzeli, etc.) with the mass of others, including arthropurpurea. Places were found only on the day of departure, when it was too late to catch weep.gif

That's enough for today, I still have work to do...

Comrades! So why didn't you call Ulan-Ude??? There was a phone!((....by the way, all the same Ulan-Ude, not Ulan-Ude

Excellent report, very familiar places. Unfortunately, I haven't visited any mountains this year due to work. You're very lucky with the trogosome - I've never caught one. Kaya flies to UU in early July, but in Mondes on July 2-really unusual, if you also take into account the very cold spring and the late flight of butterflies.

bear caterpillar, most likely lichen. There are a lot of them running around on the road, like going to a circus. They say pyungeleri has a similar caterpillar, I only saw them in the photo myself. They are willing to eat all sorts of plantain-dandelions, unlike these lichens. On P1030438_1.JPG 3 such lichens.

We arrived in Ulan-Ude in the late afternoon (and there was a plane early in the morning), we really wanted to eat and sleep (and some of us also wanted to see the sights), as a result, it completely fell out of my head that there are "nashi" in the city smile.gif. Our flaw. It would be both interesting and useful to talk, but... I think that this is not our last visit to your region, because not everything was "taken" from the planned one.

I continue to spread out the unfolded material from Buryatia. Plus, I gradually adjust the already posted material (spread it out in groups) and add new photos to the existing groups. I will definitely post photos of cuckoos, metalloids, dippers, bombycoids, moths, other noctuids, daytime ones separately in groups. While this is the case, something may change further.
