I've been to Altai 2 times. The first time we stopped near the Chui highway near the village of Kumalyr, the second time we moved to Kosh-Agach. I was on Lake Teletskoye. They stood at the source of the Biya River, near the village. Artybash. Locals, at night, blindly rummaged in the vestibules of tents. They stole my sneakers. By the time I came to my senses, I jumped out of the tent at the noise, it was already too late. And the fog was big. I agree that the most adequate of the aborigines are shepherds. During the expedition, we met one shepherd regularly. Quite a normal person, given the local flavor. Once, in the dead of night, a passing bus had a flat tire not far from us. What kind of audience was there, one could only guess from the hooting and animal sounds, I think that under a certain degree. We were out of sight, but with stakes and an axe, we stayed until we were safely repaired and left. I haven't been to Tuva. But according to the reviews-to go there with children, to put it mildly, is not reasonable.

"Yessmile.gif, and you know him, then?"

A sign. And I was on one of his expeditions.

Phone number(phone number) I've changed it, and because I've moved all my notebooks are in the drawers somewhere, so I don't think I can find his phone number right now. If he's interested in my opinion, let him call me himself.
Say that this is Andrey, who constantly smokes smelly brown cigarettes-Konstantin will understand who we are talking about. smile.gif

The shepherds did not attack and did not demand money, but they strained by visiting the camp when they were drunk and sitting for a long time. Moreover, one was silent all the time. He was sitting on a log, swaying. Why did you come here? Unpleasant. The next time was far away in the mountains, where only climbers go.

The question is: is it safer in Mongolia or Tuva?

The question is: is it safer in Mongolia or Tuva?

I understand that in Mongolia

The question is: is it safer in Mongolia or Tuva?

Ask Yakovlev. I've been to these regions more than once.

I was in northern Mongolia once, there were no excesses. However, the huntsman we contacted warned that there might be attempts to steal boats, gasoline, etc. from the camp, so in the last two nights before leaving, sentries were set up.

In general, the local population in Mongolia (at least in the north) is very small, most of them are pastoralists; settlements and other settlements are also sparsely populated. I heard somewhere that 2/3 of the total population of Mongolia is concentrated in the capital, Ulaanbaatar.

Yeah. What a wonderful picture is being drawn. I've heard before that things aren't going well there, but I didn't think it was that bad.

Moreover, I'm not going there alone, but as part of a large scientific and educational expedition, in which a) there will be a bunch of middle-and high - school children, and b) there will be no firearms. Before that, we traveled in this format to various places in southern Siberia (Altai, Baikal, northern Mongolia), but the local population was not aggressive. Yes, and there was very little of it in the vicinity of the places where we were standing.

And in this case, judging by the reviews (and not only from this forum), the place is extremely unfavorable for such an expedition... for social reasons. Perhaps we should change our plans.
Unfortunately, the choice of travel location is not only up to me, but I will try to convince those responsible of the extreme risk of this venture.

A friend of mine here, who visited an archaeological camp in Tuva last year, says that Tuvans 'aggression towards newcomers is not even hostility to "Muscovites" and "outsiders" (which, to one degree or another, is found in many places in the outback, even with the civilian population), but purposeful and deep chauvinism towards Russians, supported by separatist sentiments... Even some Tuvan historians came to them at that archaeological camp to give lectures about how the Stalinist regime repressed Tuvans there in the 40s.

In general, I will try to come up with some other option, approximately in the same part of the world (southern Siberia, maybe Central Asia). If someone experienced can give you some advice , I would be grateful...

Good day! In fact, everything is not so bad and gloomy. I myself am a Tuvinian, I live in Kyzyl. I have a lot of Russian friends and it's strange that they are still alive ))). Criminal reports are the same as in the average Russian city, there are freaks everywhere, you can run into them in a residential area of Moscow. Hostility to Russians is a myth, a gopnik, a real potsonchegu is deeply indifferent to what nationality his victim will be. You just need to follow basic precautions: 1) do not go to someone else's monastery with your charter 2) avoid drunks / drunken companies 3) do not attract attention (expensive equipment, an abundance of cash, etc.) 4) goodwill and that's it. I will answer any specific questions.

Chingis, thank you for your feedback!

Yes, it is clear that you should not go to extremes and unnecessarily dramatize the situation. Simply, it was important to gather any available information.

By the way, we still decided not to change the place of the expedition, it will be Lake Kara-Khol. As far as I understand, the reserve management will cooperate with us and, in particular, provide security in some way. In addition, the participants will include a person who can communicate with the local population smile.gif
