Alexey Klimenko died

Community and ForumWe mourn the departed. ObituariesAlexey Klimenko died

Ilya Osipov announced the sad news:

"Alexey A. Klimenko (17.01.1970-23.06.2017)

I don't want to say banal words, but Russian entomology has suffered a heavy loss.
Alexey Klimenko has died. He was only 47 years old.
He was my friend and business partner at Russian insects for almost 30 years.
Alexey was a talented entomologist, an encyclopedic scholar. Insects, and most of all beetles, were the love of his life. Alexey was an excellent taxonomist. Identifying insects for him was not just a job, but a great pleasure. They discovered new species of beetles for science, and wrote many articles. According to his collections, other scientists have described more than a dozen new species of insects. Unfortunately, Alexey did not have time to finish the work of his life - the monograph of the Khrushchei from the tribe Melolonthinae. Several new taxa of this group were not described.
Expeditions were Alexey's passion. He traveled all over Central Asia within the former USSR.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Alexey visited many countries in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. His last expeditions to Borneo and the islands of Indonesia were incredibly successful.
My last trip was to Thailand. The difficult expedition conditions worsened his health.
On June 23, Alexey died of a heart attack far from his native home, in Thailand.
Alexey's death is one of those losses that cannot be replaced.
We will remember Alexey as an incredibly kind and decent person, completely devoted to science and sincerely loving nature.

It's still hard to believe. Words can't describe how much of a loss this is. The kind you never think about.

Lesha was an excellent entomologist, a scientist who was interested in taxonomy as a "stepping stone" to a deeper understanding of groups, especially their historical biogeography. One can see his excellent knowledge and interest in the lamellar sawyere, which he always put ahead of his entire life. It is very painful that he did not have time to complete his magnum opus. Science for him has always been much more important than money and everyday life.

Alexey, in fact, discovered the rainforest for me, inviting me on the first trip in my life to this zone. The expedition didn't have a better role model. I remember how in Borneo, even when the heat and the bees were particularly unbearable, he sat and methodically, carefully disassembled and stacked the material, sat and disassembled. From the outside, you might have thought that a robot was working, and the climate was much harder for him than for most of us.

For me, he collected a lot of mantises, from Borneo, Thailand, Cuba and other countries. Some of the material was used in my articles, one of which was partly based on the rich results of our joint trip to Borneo and his later expeditions. But there's still a lot of processing stuff waiting.

He was also a very nice, kind and sympathetic person. Even if there were quite deep disagreements on some issues, communication with him did not cease to be extremely pleasant and comfortable. And somehow it does not fit into my head that this communication is so chaotic, suddenly, without any afterword came to an end.

Above the right eye, you can see a slight burn - Lyosha was the first to experience the chemical protection of mantises.

Evgeny is absolutely right. A completely undervalued scientist has left. A man who really gave himself COMPLETELY to science and insects. I don't think there is a single entomologist in Russia who has such a fantastic body of knowledge. The latest photos of Leshka can be found here:

Leshka and I met back in 1989 in the Forest na Vorskla Nature Reserve and immediately became best friends. How many expeditions we went on together (from Central Asia to Morocco and Borneo), opened the company RIK LLC together (Romantsov and Klimenko), went on vacation together and to the Crimea and Sochi, how many drinks we had together, how many intimate topics were discussed, how many fun gatherings we had, there was a lot of everything. And now he's gone...there were only four new species that he found, and I described them and named them after him. I grieve...Lech, how could you do that? What about us now?..And the crunches collected in Sumatra for you will never wait for you... For me, this is not just a heavy loss, a large chunk of my life has gone with Leshka. And this loss is no longer recoverable...In general, as in the song of Vysotsky: "Everything is now one, only it seems to me that I did not return from the battle."
Goodbye Leshka....
Pavel Romantsov

Leshka's sister, the direct heir, entered the apartment, but found that all the material had been removed the day before.... There is no money to take the body out of Thailand, the insurance company refuses! I wonder if the one who took everything out will allocate at least a cent for removal and burial....... Not to mention the melolontins, which, according to the will of Lyosha (it was!!!!) they must be included in the ZIN. Let's see! But the name of this person, you will all know! From one side or another!!!

The day before the apartment keys were handed over to my sister, who was informed about Leshka's death only seven days after his death, i.e. on June 30, every last beetle was taken out of the apartment, and there were millions of them!!! Apparently, they were taking it out slowly and thoroughly, while Leshka's body, which no one needed, had been lying and decomposing in Bangkok for almost a month. On the last day before handing over the keys, a leisurely sweep was carried out. We took our time, ate pizza. Simple banal criminality, which will be very easy to give a move and all the means for this are there. Who did this is known. These people have no honor, and you can't talk to them in terms of honor and conscience. Since the case has already been completed, they are offered an option in which they will avoid the subsequent prosecution. First of all, this is the removal of Leshka's body and the transfer of melolontin to the ZIN. We will keep our word on how to comply with this agreement, but NOW LISTEN CAREFULLY: just try
to break it even one iota, just give us a reason...

From Colombia...
I was horrified to learn about the death of Alyosha Klimenko...
Always, when meeting at the Pashina fair, they agreed to see each other separately... I didn't have to...
In Alexey's life, I took part in His entomological fate at least twice...
Erased it...
Let it be between you and me...

I also just found out - so late...

I met Alexey back in the distant 80's, when I was a member of the student delegation of the LSU Biofactory Faculty to visit the biology students of Moscow State University... Then we talked during their return visit. And the last meeting was a few years ago, when we conducted a summer student practice in zoology at RSPU together (in parallel groups). Well, we talked a lot after classes, of course.

I will say one thing: this is a terrible loss, and Alexey is insanely sorry. He was a bright man. And when people die at that age, it's terrible.

Finally, the first part of the Khrushchev collection, owned by Lyosha Klimenko, was transferred to the ZIN. And on Zin's website, his posthumous page was created:
