Hello everyone!
Recently, I became interested in hornets. I dream of having a pet. I want to ask you: how realistic is this? I live in St. Petersburg, I've never seen a hornet in our area. They say there is in Karelia, but I would like to have a simpler option-namely, to order a hornet at home by mail or in some other way to buy it. But I do not know where. I searched a lot of sites, and found only giant scolia among the stinging hymenoptera for 10 euros.
The second problem, as far as I know, is that the hornet is not a pet. It is not kept as spiders, mantises and similar creatures. And for keeping a hornet, I have a small aquarium, measuring 550x300x300.
In general, gentlemen entomologists, how feasible is my dream?

I don't know what entomologists think of tovareshi, but in my opinion it is unrealistic to keep them in an apartment, especially in a terrarium. We need a large volume. They need to fly, don't they? In addition, the family will grow rapidly. Where will you keep themsmile.gif? Here in the country to arrange a nest artificially-it is more real, the main thing is that the neighbors would not be againstwink.gifit.

Yes, you're probably right. I just saw a video where people keep hornets in small boxes for a long time - they keep them as pets. But I think this is immoral, the hornet really needs freedom, flight... :-)
But I don't know what to do with my passion.

and you let her (the hornet) go for a walk from time to time wink.gif
Seriously, I agree with VBoris

Oh, a hornet in a box or a terrarium, Roland303 this is very very not serious smile.gifThere are hornets in St. Petersburg, but they are not easy to find, and one wasp will not live outside the nest! In terrariums they keep German wasps, that is, a whole nest, there is an article on this topic in one of the collections of the seminar of the Moscow Zoo, but they also keep hornets, I also saw an article on the network but I can't find it frown.gif
By the way, now all the hornets in the middle zone, alas, died out, only wintering ones remained, so we must wait until next summer...

In the Gatchina or Luzhsky district, Flax.areas the hornet is quite an ordinary and frequently encountered insect

That's for sure. During this summer, I saw about a dozen of them, although I did not go to the region so often and I am indifferent to the perepons.

I've heard about German wasps. But I'm interested in imeno hornets) The main thing is that I came up with this idea ("hornet as a pet"=)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuMS3KDNysM
And there the dude writes that he kept a hornet like this for 7 months.

At the expense of extinct - this is understandable, and I'm waiting for spring, because I understand that somehow I won't be able to see the hornet before ;-)

alex 2611, Dabr-thank you so much for such important information smile.gif

Unbelievable! But I think that he could have caught the female founder, he did not write exactly when he caught her and when she died. The fact is that the females and workers of hornets are almost the same size. In general, quite interesting!
But in the spring to meet with a hornet is not much more likely than now, then some female founders fly, and there are few of them.
By the way, yes, it is very difficult to get a wasp to sting when it is out of the nest, but you can. I remember how I waved off the German one who wanted to eat a tolya pear or something else that I ate there, so after I swung it with my palm, she abruptly jumped back in a shocking flight and clung to her clothes!
And in the spring you can find a bumblebee female smile.gif

Last spring, I caught a hornet and found it to be a female. I really wanted to watch the construction of the nest. Unfortunately, I didn't want to build a nest in captivity. I held it for a week and then let it go.
At the expense of German: a very useful eepon German wasp- (Para)Vespula germanica, prefers pear aphids.
Very effective. A fruit spoils Polistes gallicus (Polistes gallicus).

I once saw a science film about hornets. I don't remember what it's called, but I can look it up if you want. It completely reflected the life of the hornet family. I now plan to take a closer look at the photos and videos of these wonderful creatures with the onset of spring and summer.

Thank you all for your answers. The hornet was never purchased, but I think it is possible to take pictures of them in the spring, just in the area of Luga. Instead of living, I now dream of at least dry. Do you know where to get it?=)

The movie you're talking about is most likely "Hornets From Hell". At least I haven't seen any other hornet movies. I remember something, though... there's another one, like the BBC, but it's hard to get hold of. I don't remember the name.
"Hornets From Hell" is purchased at least through ozon.ru.

It will be interesting to look at the photo. I will also post it here if I take a picture.

Roland303, yes, exactly! Hornets from hell.
It will not be modest of me to offer you to visit my website where you can find 2 photos of a hornet, information about them and a video file (it will appear there in the very near future).

Roland You will not be able to keep the nest indoors. In the aquarium (or terrarium), high humidity will be created (imago excrement, liquid food), and your honeycombs will simply rot, and the brood, respectively, will die. A better option is to keep in the aquarium, when it is displayed on the balcony, so that the hornets forage (in-flight of working hornets). I didn't even get this option, but it's possible that you can do it.

21.04.2008 14:04, vespabellicosus

In addition, you need to be aware of the responsibility for such content. This includes possible problems with neighbors (up to the court), and also the health of your household (all this is relevant in the city). And if you keep it in a country house or in the summer in the country, I don't see any problems...

Hello everyone.

Site your visited, photos of the hornet are impressive. The other day I had the opportunity to take a picture of the uterus, but my hands were shaking, I couldn't get so close, although my technical capabilities allowed it. I'll post pictures somewhere here in the corresponding topic. And the "Video" section doesn't work for some reason.

2 vespabellicosus
Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking: to have an aquarium on my balcony (I live in the city), but somehow I didn't think about the mandatory condition of entry and departure of working individuals. And this, as you correctly noted, is a problem not only for my neighbors, but also for my household. Walking along the balcony next to the aquarium will at least be unsafe, and even scary. Therefore, you really need to buy a dacha =)

Roland303, the video section works. It is necessary to click on the image to go to another site intended for posting video and photo materials on it. There you can watch the video without any problems.
I would post it on Yandex, but there is a limited size of the uploaded file (no more than 5 MB) .

I caught a hornet in practice as a student in the 1st year - flew into the room. I wrapped it in a curtain. Then he carefully unwound it and used nail tongs to cut off the stinger. the hornet therefore remained alive, stopped biting with its stump, and even secreted a drop of venom. But it was no longer dangerous. Only I knew that he was a castrate. and so. this beautiful specimen lived in my box, ate meat, And its main function was to FRIGHTEN DEFFOK! wink.gif
Who later kicked him out of the window frown.gif

The son trapped a family of hornets, the trap was for a swarm of bees. So soon there will be a full family of them, if he doesn't smoke them out. Hornets are super big and fat.
You can think about delivering it mobile 096 611 46 00 this is Ukraine Poltava region
