Swallowtail pupa

In the summer, I caught a caterpillar in the country, identified it as a swallowtail, especially since they fly there quite often. The caterpillar turned into a pupa in the fall. Where it is better to store it now so that the butterfly
comes out. P. S. The school was given the task to prepare a report, and you need to add something of your own.. I made a bunch of macro photos of pupa, started looking for material, and then it's not there. On all sites there is absolutely the same essay that is spent on each other, 10 pages scraped, still nothing is really clear. I wonder why you need black dots around the perimeter, which, when zoomed in, turned out to be not points, but it is not clear what. I will be very grateful if someone will tell me what it is or throw off the normal info... smile.gif

An incomprehensible point...
An increase of about 100 times.

Villi at the end of the pupa. What is it and why is it needed?
The magnification is also not small, about 100x..

Take a plastic container with a lid, make ventilation holes in the lid, put wet moss on the bottom-sphagnum (just not wet) and a pupa there.
Container in the refrigerator where about 0C or on the balcony (open, not glazed).
Check the moss moisture once every two weeks and moisten if necessary.
In the spring, you take out the pupa and put it in a box lined with gauze from the inside - for breeding.
And the black dots are spiracles.
Good luck!

Thank you very much!

villi at the end? I didn't quite understand which end. before pupation, the caterpillar releases a thread, which binds the pupa to the stem by the end and middle. maybe this is a piece of thread?

No, just short black villi, at the end of the pupa at the point of narrowing, in the last photo everything is visible. What, no one has detailed information on swallowtails, well, or links where it can be found?

the last photo shows everything.
In the last photo, nothing is clear... frown.gif

As I understand it the last photo shows the spiracle through which the butterfly breathes wink.gif

Eric, these are not dots, but spiracles that were still in the caterpillar yes.gif wink.gif no.gifAnd will continue to be in the butterfly. Insects breathe with spiracles.

Good morning! Last night, another swallowtail caterpillar pupated. Immediately after the transformation, it was a rich green color. And in the morning I saw a completely different pupa... Tell me, what happened to her?"

Oddly enough, most of the photos I saw were exactly like this. Maybe different subspecies, with less pronounced spiracles?

Yes, nothing happened - I took the background color. And before that, it was just soft.

Well, how to get the swallowtail out of the caterpillar, there is a lit-ra?

The caterpillar turned into a pupa in the fall.

Eric, tell me, how did your experiment end? Did you manage to get the swallowtail out of the pupa?

I have the same question. Today I was at a friend's dacha, looking at fennel, but there was nothing on it. But the caterpillars can crawl far away...
