Future message board: sectioning

Community and ForumWebsite news and updatesFuture message board: sectioning

Peter Khramov, 14.03.2013 21:27

To continue the previous discussion http://lepidoptera.pro/community/12274.
The message board is to be opened soon, so let's think about how it can be sectioned and what sections you'd like to see, say "Butterfly photography", "Distinctions between blues and bluewings" and so on. Once at least one list is ready, it will get opened.

All the rest posts on: Q&A, new features

1. Species discussions. (namely, why this or that butterfly/moth identified like that. Any doubt and arguments are also to be there).
2. Recommended web sources (authentic and 100% reliable).
3. New books and other publications. Where and what published, worthful or not. Where and how to get, prices.
Overall, that's all.
P. S. Petr, there are species that can be surely identified only after the detailed examination of genitalia as it's said. Even we have such here on the website, randomly classified. What if make some special section and move them all there from undetermined? To have them all in one place, identified at least to genus, then some eager enthusiast may come and try to find some differences, eventually may find some marking feature, spot, streak, uncommon wing curve etc. Gradually some species can be finally identified. Along with board discussions...
The very board sections won't take much space. Some of them will be probably nearly inactive. Anyway, there should be a message board for anyone to be able to start a thread...

"why this or that butterfly/moth identified like that" is talked over on the species photo page. Distinctive features are discussed on the species description page.
Web sources are added to the thread "Entomological toolkit: useful links on lepidoptera and more", but ok, they can be optionally moved to the message board. Generally, the catalogue of links is a catalogue, not a thread, though such threads poorly do exist on message boards since their owners just lack good catalogue engine. Or they do have but don't use that.
Books and stuff would better be catalogued too, anyway for the beginning we can have them listed on the message board.
As for some special section for trouble species, doesn't seem to concern much the very message board, but this thing is going to be solved with a new feature which will allow to link photos not only with species but to other taxa as well. Thus if the specimen can be identified at least to genus, it will be moved to the genus.
Anyone may start a thread right now, just there are no lots of people eager to. Maybe the message board will increase the number of those.
So for now we have next sections to include: photography, recommendations, discussions, off-topic. That's clear. Not clear what sections concerning lepidoptera we need beyond all the existing threads that already cover species, photo and other taxa discussions. Waiting for your thoughts.

"Thus if the specimen can be identified at least to genus, it will be moved to the genus."
The answer is not exact. I didn't propose to pile up all the species identified to the genus (see above). Repeating once again, I offer just to separate those species that require genitalia examination for sure ID. This looks much simpler, visible and handier with all subsequent pluses and so on.

Ok, got it. I can just add one more dropbox in the species characteristics. But people should add info to have that dropbox active, and such info could be provided with reference or just be a personal message. The thing is that people don't add any info) Despite there is a special link on the description page of an each species. Anyway, we can try.

As for sections, few more to add: 1. Lepidopterological glossary for to seek for some term and its meaning;
2. No-reply topics just for information or something to add if one has to.

23.03.2013 18:08, Peter Khramov

Good idea about glossary and no-reply topics, should be added later, though it's not about message board but rather some independent sections like "Glossary" or such no-reply features as to species or photo comments, not only ones on a message board.

So the software is ready to go. Along with that the comment system will also get an update that includes cross-linking inside the website, text editing (bold italics etc.), editing of recently uploaded comments (yours, of course), attaching photos without uploading them in the gallery and also hyperlinking to pics on other websites. If you need anything more, now it's the right time to share your thoughts.

No movement here, before folks seemed like interested in contributing, what's now? Just me and Petr are "sparring". Moderators simply let it go. Hey, where are you all? You-hooo.

Yury, as the owner of a website with message board, I can say that the main thing is to section properly future board. Later it's just a minute thing to join a new section if needed.

Svetlana, thanks. Maybe, you will advise something if it takes a go. May I have a look at your website?
