And why, finally, "cockroaches[I]"? and not fleas, lice and other "worldly zahrebetniki"? In the St. Petersburg hotels fleas once wereooooooooooooooooooooooo! but not now. A problem? In Saratov, cockroaches almost completely disappeared around 2002-2003. It is not within my competence to discuss the reasons for this disappearance, but I will tell you my little story:
1. We used to live in a small one-room apartment in a dorm. There were just a lot of cockroaches! They were constantly poisoned, but it didn't help. But then, suddenly, we noticed that there were fewer cockroaches: 1-2 copies. in a week, and then they disappeared completely! And this happened to everyone, in the whole house! And most importantly synchronously, simultaneously!
Couldn't everyone have done the renovation all at once? Or buy products with GMOs? No, it seems to me that someone poisoned them with something, something fundamentally new, very effective and, most importantly, not previously sold!

But repairs also help, although not against cockroaches:
There was a large apartment in which my grandmother lived, there was no repair for 20 years, the plumbing was leaking, there were crumbs and garbage everywhere. A Garden of Eden for cockroaches, but they were not, and instead lived Pharaoh ants. Now we have made a "European renovation". Ants like the wind blew away (before that, 20 years lived and rejoiced!)

An extremely interesting observation. You know, I've already heard similar stories about replacing cockroaches with ants twice. It was on the 2nd floor of a 9-storey building in St. Petersburg. First, the prussians that were previously familiar in the entrance disappeared, then the ants appeared (which I don't know, I tell the story from words), then they disappeared. Strange somehow, is there a pattern here?

Let's try to summarize what we have at this stage. Hypotheses we discuss on the reasons for the decline in the number of cockroaches in Russian cities:

1) The influence of cellular communication;
2) The influence of products containing GMOs;
3) An epidemic of an unknown disease among house cockroaches;
4) Insecticides containing viruses pathogenic to cockroaches;
5) Insecticides of contact action with the possibility of spreading among the colony;
6) The displacement of cockroaches by other insects (while we suspect ants in this);

This is just a rough list of possible causes. It is not perfect and undoubtedly requires clarification and reservations. A series of experiments will help determine the final answer. In this regard, we formulate the following questions:
1) What experimental models will allow us to confirm or refute these hypotheses?
2) What objective methods can be used to study the geography of this phenomenon?
