Here in the topic about occlusation, it was said that the Oleander hawk moth pupates on the surface of the soil, is that so?! Is the chrysalis just lying around or is there a cocoon? Is there a certain crawling radius of the caterpillar from the food plant? And where do they prefer to weave cocoons of Small Saturnia? In what place of the forage bush,at the top or closer to the rhizomes?I think all these small details noticed by us will somehow facilitate the search for pupae in natural conditions. After all, the main thing is to know who and where to look for!

hello everyone!
I have observed pupation many times, but always in captivity. I don't think there are many Fabres left to keep an eye on beetles for days on end. Once I was raising a medium-sized wine hawk moth and noticed this feature: the green shape of the caterpillars pupates in the foliage, the gray shape - on the ground. Is this true or just a coincidence? For I do not know any other hawkmoth that sleeps on verkhotur. In general, it is easier to search for saturn cocoons not in natural conditions, but on entomological sites)))
