But what is this nutcracker? I have an idea, but this species is considered extinct in Surrey...

Broadleaf forest.

It is similar to Athous haemorrhoidalis (Fabricius, 1801), BUT some of this genus live in Surrey. The checklist for GB lists 5 species, including bicolor (Goeze, 1777) and
campyloides Newman, 1833 - I can't imagine...

At first, it also seemed to me that Athous. I probably didn't even take it.
And now something is happening...
Isn't this Synaptus filiformis?

The top is more likely Limodromus krynickii, although here you need a more detailed photo of the pronotum. Assimilis is more rounded (notched) sides

Bottom of Pterostichus aethiops

Still, L. krynickii
In addition, in the photo I do not see the edging of the base of the pronotum (which is also a diagnostic sign).

niger. Melanarius has a different pronotum shape.

Look not at the whiskers, but at the claw segment in both sexes and at the last sternum of the abdomen in males. Signs can be seen without a magnifying glass.

about 3 mm

if 3 mm, then it is not a Gymnetron, but something like Rhinusa pilosa

I looked through Rhinusa - as it is more like a Gymnetron in terms of habit confused.gif
The size could have been smaller, I remember being surprised that a more or less decent photo came out. You'll need to take a closer look at the herbs.
Thanks !!!

well, if all the same gumnitron, then you can pay attention to this type - http://coleop123.narod.ru/key/curculionina...etron_aper.html
and in general, if there is no beetle, then there is no point in guessing)
