By the way, Plavilshchikov once set out to count all known insect species.

Perhaps not the most useless activity. In essence, this means writing a catalog of the world's insects. Although one person is clearly not able to do this. This can be really useful if you write a catalog not of all insects, but of some family or small order.
There have been many publications (and speculations) about the number of insect species. From 3 to 100 million species (including undescribed ones).

Undescribed means unknown, so they don't count.

It is now a very common fashion to arrange taxa in catalogues in alphabetical order. Moreover, often not only species in genera and synonyms are arranged alphabetically, but also genera in tribes and families, as well as the families themselves. However, adherents of this method often turn out to be inconsistent, and for some reason high-ranking taxa (types, classes, orders, etc.) are not listed in alphabetical order.
My opinion: it doesn't make much sense in alphabetical order. For quick search, and so in every normal directory there is an Index (or Pointer). I propose to discuss possible alternatives to the "alphabetical" approach in writing directories.
