Identifying insects for children

Community and ForumTaxonomy. ClassificationIdentifying insects for children

Эльфа, 31.05.2012 17:00

I teach a course on general child development and the program requires children to collect a collection of 25 insects and sign each
one - where it was caught
- when it was caught
- who caught
it - what is the name of this insect.
And if there are no questions with the first ones, then please tell me simple classifiers by the name of insects, so that a child (11-13 years old) can understand.
I understand that they can catch anything, but at least up to the squad. I'm not a biologist, I was once interested in this, but I didn't have to define so much and at that time there was someone to ask smile.gif

in Soviet times, there was a whole series of "school atlas-determinant of xxxx", a separate volume on butterflies-Carnelio M. P. moscow "enlightenment" 1986. some "specialists" still indicate them in the literature lists umnik.gif lol.gifthere is one on insects "in general", but more narrow. all these books are available in any school library, and even more so in the Internet.
in the early 2000s, a series of "all about everything" mini-encyclopedia was produced, now there is a "Nature Guide" on sale, a bunch of volumes on various topics, and so on

Why so much? What if they catch something rare? And then they ask: why do animals die out? They'd better wear them alive... Although first you need to explain about wasps, bees...

Maybe the law of meanness will catch you.... They know about the Red Book. The fact that we can catch it from it was shown to them in the pictures. Yes, and they will catch them in the city, and then if something flies in, especially in the house, so almost 100% with a slipper and no one will remember about the Red Book (I have something in the freezer that just because of the collection under the slippers of the neighbors did not get).
They know about wasps and bees: children aged 11-13.

I read the message and thought that I could try to replace it with photos.. but still, now children live on the Internet, so I immediately refused. The number of beetles was limited to 10 and then God forbid that they collected them. We focus on the fact that they themselves can name the type of ants, the ecology will not suffer from 1 ant, and they will learn how to create collections of insects (the actual purpose of the test).

Zlopastnyi Brandashmyg, thank you, I watched it.
I would like something quite simple and in electronic form such as wings 4, paws-6, antennae are/are not... dragonfly.
It is clear that there are more questions, but something like this would be necessary.
And reference books will probably be more convenient for us to get in the library and take photos.

If you are interested in what we caught and determined, I will post photos here. I would be interested to test myself.

If the goal is to teach you how to create a collectible selection of insects, then you may need to focus on a simplified definition, such as recognition by families, maybe by genera, and even by species for those who are completely interested. But on the other hand, focus on the proper formation of the collection, the rules for collecting, storing and mounting insects. In the light of this approach, I see a large lecture-theoretical part and a much smaller almost collective one. That is, the tendency is not to do a scientific approach, but rather to popularize, UNN. And why will they be in the city to catch?, better thematic excursions, insects of the reservoir, insects of the field, garden. so it will be easier for you to study the approximate composition of the fauna, and accordingly less problems by definition . You focus on butterflies, large beetles, dragonflies, grasshoppers, and this will be more than enough to start with, despite the fact that the material can be submitted very succinctly on the topic of the collection.

If you say that children can download images from the Internet and pass them off as their own, this is quite easy to deal with (tested in communication with lazy and slow-witted students).
Ask them to bring the images in electronic form (and who prints them now?), with the original file name, full-size and with undelete EXIF data. Those who take photos will understand, but those who don't take photos and don't process them will.
Files with a name like 78f3453b_856d.jpg - downloaded. EXIF contains data about the time and parameters of the image taken, as well as the camera that took the image.
Well, the quality of the image can also say a lot wink.gifIf the frame is a masterpiece of photo animation, it's worth thinking about smile.gif
Although, of course, it is possible to argue for a long time about replacing traditional methods of studying insects with such ones. But if for any reason you have to replace the collection of insects with their shooting, you can and should fight plagiarism.
About atlases. The library you were given a link to above has an atlas in German, Chinery M. Pareys Buch der Insekten. Here link. Gentlemen entomologists will probably say " pfe!", but the drawings there are good smile.gif

Why pfe? The book is wonderful (of course, there are bloopers everywhere) with good, informative drawings. I have it myself in French, and I once quoted an excerpt on hawkmoth from it. I am still happy with this book.

Well, then I'm calm. And the more gifted ones can keep grasshoppers, bring butterflies out of caterpillars, then dragonflies...

It's true.. I've been learning this for 4 years. But he did wink.gif. If I start talking, I'll spend the whole day... umnik.gif

And where do these courses take place?

Royal Rangers Program http://royal-rangers.com.ua/
I'm from Cherkasy myself. For each test, there are 5-6 classes, if according to the normal scheme, then a month and a half to study insects, for example. Insects are finished (we just need to make collections), we are studying skates now. The program is very diverse. Higher education doesn't save you.

I grew butterflies myself as a child. My aunt was even lucky to see how she climbs out of the chrysalis. My mother is a biologist and then it was easier to ask "what to feed this caterpillar?" out of 5-10 probably only 2 or 3 successfully turned into butterflies.

And we have a bias to ensure that children learn to think and apply their knowledge in practice. Now, where questions are on yes/no - everything goes easily, but where you need to think, it's difficult to express your opinion.

If I start talking, I'll spend the whole day...
(I didn't understand the quote)

We would like you when the topic was passed. It was not easy for me to tell, I am more of a practitioner, and this is not a topic that I studied very much. Actually, on the butterflies and crustaceans that I carried to the teacher for identification, all my passion for entymology ended.
