Boris Evseevich Bykhovsky (August 14 (27), 1908-January 26, 1974) was a Soviet zoologist, parasitologist, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1964), founder and first editor-in-chief of the journal Parasitology. Academician-Secretary of the Department of General Biology (1963-1971), member of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Member of the CPSU since 1941. Graduated in 1929 from the Leningrad State University Faculty of Biol. Since 1930, he worked in the Institute of Fisheries. From 1935 to 1940 and from 1942— Researcher of the Zoological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1940-1944 — Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the Tajik branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. From 1962 to the last days of his life, he was Director of the Zoological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1962-1974, Leningrad).

B. E. Bykhovsky is the author of more than 100 scientific papers, including systematic determinants and monographs devoted to the study of fish helminths. In his works, problems of general parasitology, ecology and evolution of organisms are widely presented. Based on extensive studies of the fauna, morphology, biology, phylogeny, and toxonomy of flukes, he proved the origin of monogenetic and digenetic flukes from various ancestors and separated them into separate classes. The ecological direction developed by B. E. Bykhovsky is related to the study of the entire fauna of parasites of individual species or groups of animals in their formation and change depending on the habitat, season, age, and host biology. Participating in a number of scientific expeditions to the Aral and Caspian Seas, Barabinsk Lakes (1930-1938), he obtained valuable data on the phylogenetic relationships existing between parasites and their hosts (fish, migratory birds). Later, during numerous trips (more than 25 scientific expeditions), he studied the fish parasite fauna of the East and South-East seas. Asia-from the Sea of Okhotsk to the tropics of the Pacific Ocean, as well as the Black, Azov and Adriatic Seas.

The works of B. E. Bykhovsky have received recognition among domestic and foreign scientists and are widely used in economic practice. His journal Parasitology (1967), of which he was editor-in-chief, contributed to the development of biol. science. He has trained many highly qualified specialists.

B. E. Bykhovsky was a delegate to the XXIII Congress of the CPSU from the Leningrad Party Organization, was elected a member of the Leningrad regional Committee and the City Committee of the CPSU, a deputy of the Leningrad City Council of Workers ' Deputies. He headed the Scientific Council on Biol, the basics of development, reconstruction and protection of the animal world, and was chairman of the Soviet National Committee on International Biol, the program. In the 2nd ed. BME — Editor of the Biology department. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Red Banner of Labor, as well as medals.
