Last time we started talking about cognac, we ended up drinking in Moscow.
Now about the girls. Oh, my heart feels like it, we'll make an agreement before a collective trip to Thailand.
By the way, I have a vacation at the end of January - I want to go to Thailand.... wink.gif

At the end of January, I think it is really better to go to Thailand for girls, because the dry season and the forest is empty to the point of disgrace.

I'm sorry, I thought I'd go fishing a bit.... Really, really bad with beetles?

I'm going to go there at the end of September. I'll try to find out how things are going in January. It seems to me that not everything is so bad should be smile.gif

I don't know about beetles. I think hefty beetles, awesome butterflies, and so on ... there will be enough good stuff on the running/flying anthropogank. But with real cenophiles, there can be serious problems.

I saw the "break of the season" in Khao Yai National Park. Somewhere in early November, sluggishly rainy and warm weather changed dramatically (literally in one or two days): dusty wind, blue sky without a single cloud and cold! Make a correction for a decent height, more than 500 m, rather ~ 700-800, during the day it was 20 with a little, at night it was less than 20 degrees. I slept in a tent in a sleeping bag in a hat and a "St. Petersburg" winter jacket . The forest seemed to have been swept away. I had to hurry down from the mountains to the coast of the Gulf of Thailand. In addition, I have seen winter collections from Cambodia made by och. a good collector - very boring.

On the other hand, Thailand is big, and different areas can be quite different. From my (and not only) point of view, the most productive are the late spring and summer months-the wet season. Minus - some write that this is a hellish time for a European (again, it should strongly depend on the place). Plus-off-season and prices for everything are lower!!!

As far as I can judge from the collections and stories of colleagues, the picture is correct. It makes sense to collect from September to mid-November, warm and every day a little rain. However, Thailand is very much elongated in longitude and if in the north, and even in the mountains, it is quite a Palearctic (at the generic level) then the south is already a terry Oriental region, and the weather there is more uniform. But the south of Thailand, as far as I heard, is closed to entry due to the fighting of Muslim separatists. However, this can be circumvented by simply coming to Malaysia, to its north.

I was in Malaysia in November. On zhukmm - full zero. I didn't set any traps (I was there for work), but I looked for beetles under streetlights and in the woods. Nothing. Toka kivsyaki and, occasionally, ants. Plus I saw a couple of ornithopters and some nymphalid squirrels eating a rotten banana. I've been to Langkawi Island (Thailand is just visible from the observation deckwink.gif), Penang Island, Johor Bahru (on the border with Singapore) and the capital..

Well, a natural result of fishing in the rain forest without traps.
Such a forest seems dead and empty. The skills you acquired in Russia will not be useful.

06.08.2007 23:32, Frantic

Traps are traps, but what about traditional fishing in the light? I lived in a separate bungalow, regularly went around all the lights in the area.. I've seen horned spiders, yes. Tokki, yes. Other small geckos, yes. But not Zhukovsmile.gif)

The tropics are not a boiling ocean of insects...
I remember a friend of mine, a great insect collector, wandering around the forest park in Pretoria for the first time in his life, with an empty stain in his hand, and muttering in confusion-it looks like there are no beetles in Africa! But there were plenty of geckos! smile.gif

By the way, in South Africa with beetles was much better than in Malaysiasmile.gif, however, I judge by Sun City and the surrounding area. I was passing through Pretoria for no more than an hour (which I never regret!).

What's wrong with Pretoria?

07.08.2007 1:14, Frantic

Indigenous people, like most of South Africa. Perhaps, bm can only feel calm in the vicinity of Cape Town. They still don't close their doors at night. But the central part of the country - this mother dear. When we first landed in Johannesburg, the first group of black people cheerfully greeted everyone coming off the tapa with "fakami". Well, etc. It's all gloomy. And, taking into account the level of all sorts of sores among the local population (especially tuberculosis and hepatitis), somehow I don't want to communicate with them at all. Unfortunately, in places like Pretoria, this can't be avoided. But in Sun City, you can take a good walk: there are a lot of flowers and shrubs, a semi-step zone (with hills), something alive crawls all the time. The only real drawback is baboons. As for Cape Town, I didn't see any beetles there..

What do you mean? Unfortunately, I didn't get to the north of Thailand, but according to my groups, the border between the Palearctic and the Oriental region passes through Sichuan, i.e. almost all of Yunnan is a typical Indo - Malaya!

The same associations! Only along the roads fly awesome butterflies!

But the casket opens simply! At night with a lantern, on all fours, away from housing-and you will see an endless variety! A German entomologist friend of mine saw a tiger in Khao Yai. We, due to lack of money, hung out on foot without advertising our type of activity, so we didn't go far from the camp. The bourgeoisie collected money, hired a car, drove away, started catching the light - so the tiger came to the light! The animal stood, looked (entomologists hid in the car) and went on about their business...

And please tell me, do the local population and the authorities prevent fishing? In general, how are things with officialdom, i.e. fishing and export?

I can't say anything definite. On my trips, I would join someone with the "roof" option. But in general, I always prefer not to advertise my activities. There are probably more informed people on the forum.

I would like to find such a roof.

In my opinion, this is usually done in Southeast Asia through companies that specialize in catching and selling insects. I think they can be found on the Internetsmile.gif

Pash, I'd love to, but I've never done it PERSONALLY. It's just that a friend of mine has traveled so much in Peru and, I think, Thailand. He arrived, was met, taken to the right places, provided with a lamp for night hunting, etc.

There are a couple of such companies on the Internet (Belgium, USA, Great Britain, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, probably somewhere else - it's not difficult to find them through Google). However, it is rather expensive to use them. Compared to driving by yourself. But, of course, the advantages are undeniable - you are taken exactly where the insects are caught, you are not bothered by rangers and do not annoy the locals.

But(!) all hunters are taken to the same place. Of course, in the tropics, the variety is inexhaustible, but I personally prefer places where I did not catch at all or caught little.

There are other fishing opportunities through the "uncle": poachers. They charge less, bring them to places where only they know the roads, also provide minimal amenities (tent, generator, etc.), and also pay the rangers if necessary. I don't think that any of the professional catchers will reveal the secrets of how to go out for such guys.

So in the winter in Southeast Asia with beetles is a complete zero? Even if you do not need large beautiful beetles, but every little thing like leaf beetles and elephants?
What about the stinging hymenoptera?

It is during the period when none of the "normal" collectioaners go to South Asia that "rarities"are caught. There won't be many of them, but they'll all be very good views. Because no one collects in the dry season, for example.

In general, in the mountains of northern Vietnam, Thailand and southern China, it is in winter, it is on cold nights that real rarities fly. Take for example Actias chapae, the moth beetles of the genus Rhodoprasina.
Ordinary people are also looking for comfort and a warm sea breeze, a screen covered in three layers of insects. But when someone brings these rarities, the excitement rises real.

Of course, it is good when there is a desire and most importantly the opportunity to visit exotic places out of season. I myself am now leaving for South Africa, where it is now spring. Very dry and cold (in the central areas in the evening up to 0 gr! In the mountains, already at 1500 meters 3 weeks ago, there was still snow, babble!
But THE FAUNA, the fauna is now quite special, poor but special. At this time, few people caught, even local entomologists (except for lepidopterologists, they always catch everywhere and loiter in crowds smile.gif

Friends, I plan to sail to Thailand in mid-November, Koh Lipe Island, located in the very south of Thailand and is part of the national reserve. Do you think at this time there will be any thread flying there from Lepidoptera?

Is this Malacca?

No, this is the territory of Thailand, its southernmost tip user posted imagenear the sea border with Malaysia.

it is also part of a national nature reserve.

This is the key phrase of the question.
I don't recommend catching anything there at all. Takm court is very fast, without lawyers and representatives of embassies, and Zindan is not the most pleasant place to spend your time. Some of our compatriots have already tested this for themselves...

I'll get my bearings, of course, but there are no authorities on the island. Not at all. This place, thank God, has not yet found a response in the soul of the masses. In any case, I will talk to the locals about butterfly farms, places where you can catch them, or I will buy something in the store (for appearance) with a check for the amount I need, and I will take out the rest as usual in bags.

And when did these troubles take place? By time. M. B. over the past few years, have the screws been tightened? Unlikely. in reality, there is almost no control.

Naturally, it is HIGHLY desirable that no one sees anything. However, if you are going to catch hefty butterflies and beetles in the light-it's another matter. Thais probably don't know much about entomology, but they know exactly what has commercial value and what doesn't! Because I collected all sorts of small things in a test tube by hand - " ... these gringos are all crazy." By the way-more Thais beware of tourists-will see you at the gathering of some civilized idiot green-can not be too lazy to rat on the damned poacher destroying innocent animals!

I don't plan to catch any lights, i.e. I won't bring any lamps with me, but if I see something around the local lanterns, I'll try to catch it. In general, I'll talk to the locals so that they can show me the points, if there are any. I'll give them some money for it, I think we'll make a deal.

22.08.2007 16:42, Mikhail F. Bagaturov

If it is possible to purchase an official fishing license or other permit there, then this would be the best option. The mets are definitely the best people to be friends with, especially if you happen to run into someone who knows and understands something about the local fauna.
But in any case, "glow" is not worth it. As for the local authorities, they are not necessary, just local residents - they will tell you where it is necessary, especially if the territory is protected in one way or another.
