Matches can ruin the floor of the box while you light the fire, especially in wet weather.

In order to light a fire, just one match is enough. In any weather. Naturally, to do this, you need to know how to do it, or even a box of matches will not be enough wink.gif

25.03.2012 10:22, vasiliy-feoktistov

Yes, you can pour "everything that burns" (even ethyl shuffle.gifacetate )into these lighters and it will work. Only here's the question...........What for?

25.03.2012 10:26, niyaz

It says that the wick is combustible and will require replacement.

Apparently there are different modifications. In my version, an asbestos wick is installed. A normal wick should be a conductor, not a fuel.

When hiking, you usually carry a backpack and a tent, not a generator smile.gif

A backpack and a tent are a matter of course. But in multi-day entomological trips, it is advisable to take a generator as well.

It says that you need purified Zippo gasoline.

it's also written on the fence. I don't see any obstacles to it not being lit by ordinary kerosene.

continuous burning time is not more than 10 seconds.

This is if the cotton filter. And so my option burns for more than a minute exactly.

25.03.2012 10:27, Hierophis

By the way they write
http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flintlock

that even now flint is used by tourists.
I would buy something like flint just because it's interesting, it never was, I lit a fire by hitting quartzite on quartzite, and on the fluff of reed rockers smile.gif

And so, with my scale of attacks, there are enough matches+GFS, the last one is needed so that you don't get caught in the rain )))

03.04.2012 12:08, Garricos

As for lighters and probably similar things, they are good in good weather. As soon as they get wet or get wet, for example, in the rain when your hands are wet, then their practicality ends there. And it doesn't matter if there is gasoline or gas or something else-the piezoelectric element itself (flint) gets wet.
I have repeatedly made sure that it is better than ordinary matches in paraffin, or just in a sealed package-no. Even various kinds of vaunted hunting matches are not the same.
As for lighting a fire-you really need to be able to do it. As a rule, in dry weather, I collect a few dry twigs (preferably spruce), or birch bark. This is necessary directly to maintain the flame. And also a few dry small sticks, so that they can already form a heat that can catch fire and raw firewood. But if anything, in the heaviest rain, you can always find dry branches near the trunks of conifers.
In general, if you want to find out the practicality of a particular inventory, look at professional hunters and trappers.

niyaz, did you go on multi-day entomological hikes with a generator?

03.04.2012 16:54, Hierophis

I went on a one-day hike, from which I brought a stone weighing approx. 16 kg, carried 6 km in total, just carried it and thought what it would be like to go hiking with a generator )))
Although, if for me the limit of wearable weight is 25 kg, then for Niyaz probably 40, to each his smile.gifown

03.04.2012 19:22, tiger33

The stone was carried only for the sake of the experimental design? And how do you feel? Just myself while without a car, too, will have everything on yourself.

03.04.2012 19:41, Hierophis

The stone was carried in order to put in a terrarium, it is with caves, everyone liked it smile.gif

Well, blasphemy, in general, with a weight of about 17 kg, you can not only go but even run after a vole and catch a lizard, but.. comfort alas, stardaet, suffers after all, it is felt "stone for the soul" smile.gif

In my experience, I will also say that it is important to place the weight well in the backpack, so that nothing presses or warps. In the case of a generator, I don't even know, but in this regard it is probably much more convenient...

I read somewhere that the normal long-term weight carried in a backpack for men is 40% of body weight smile.gif

03.04.2012 20:35, alex017

The generator needs a single-phase about 300VA of full power to drive it to 150W drl. This is not a 16kg stone at all! Once I was interested in generators for a long time, it consumed about 0.8 liters of gasoline per 1 kW/h. Probably there are 300 watts on the Internet, fuel consumption should be even less by about a couple of times. As a result, if a couple of people go on a hike, then one drags a generator with fuel, and the other - food and water. Loading is quite small and even the weaker sex can do it.
On the other hand, you can probably adapt several powerful SD cards on the radiator and powered by accumulators, but the latter also need to be dragged, however, they weigh less and significantly. During a long hike, you can get confused with powerful solar panels for charging batteries. In this case, you can not worry about fuel and charge as much as you want.
But you need to think, experiment, invest and test in practice. And who will make it? And most importantly, when to experience it? Arbaiten niger......

03.04.2012 20:53, Romyald

Why bother so much? You can buy an inverter generator weighing less than 10 kg. dry weight. He will drink no more than 400ml. per hour.
In Laos, with the generator disassembled (weight 8.5 kg), I was able to walk through the jungle for 20 km, constantly bending down from interfering branches. The fuel was carried by the Laotians. In addition to the generator, my backpack contained: a tent ( 2kg.), a primus lamp (0.5 kg.), a mat ( 0.5 kg.), a screen for the night ( 2.5 kg.), a first-aid kit, a repair kit, bars, dishes, warm clothes.
In general, the equipment for hiking should be as light as possible. All this, you can choose in good shops of tourist equipment. As a rule, the lower the weight, the higher the price. But a quality product will pay off. You can buy a sleeping bag weighing 5kg., and freeze in it at the equator, and you can overpay, and buy a sleeping bag 3kg., and sleep in it on the roof of the Pamirs. In this case, saving money is unacceptable.

03.04.2012 21:40, Maksim M.

The weight in the backpack is different for everyone. If a person often walks with a load, then gradually increasing the weight during for example 2 years of constant hiking, you can achieve a decent difference from the 1st weight of the backpack, the body will get used to it, the legs will get stronger, the back muscles will keep the weight of 30 kg without crime.Previously, when I fished all year round, a spring backpack with a 2-seater boat, and on the return trip plus fish, weighed more than 35 kg, and it was carried home with smoke breaks from any distances of type 5-12 km.

03.04.2012 22:06, Romyald

There is no way to compare the power and efficiency of musculature at home and for 13000 km. At home, food is poorly balanced, but in a foreign country, and even with a long separation from the nearest villages, it can be so difficult that you can barely move your legs with five kilograms. If you only have a supply in the form of a hump, or a mammoth, then you can hold out for quite a long time. You just need to take some vitamins with you, and perhaps that's enough.

Romyald, why do you need warm clothes and a sleeping bag in the jungle? smile.gif I just don't know the specifics, we generally sleep outside at night in the summer, and it's also hotsmile.gif, but things warm from mid-April cause melancholy and despondency)) It is better not to go to places where you need a warm sleeping bag smile.gif

Maksim M., also noticed this, of course, you get used to everything, what is not used is degraded, and when the load appears, recovery and strengthening begins, respectively. muscles. But then again, age is probably important, and the general state of health. It may be that you start training with a backpack, and there is some limit in the body, with the same heart connected, and suddenly it happens in nature.. It's a little scary..

I also read about the benefits of a fat reserve on hikes many times, alas, I don't have it at all frown.gif

Comrades, do not forget that the adrenaline is released individually for everyone.Roman, you have full respect and respect.I am not a timid person, I am accustomed to hiking - 25 years of experience, but I will never go to Colombia. In addition to preparation, the trip plan always includes non-staff situations that we have no influence on.In a bad scenario, the result of the trip can be catastrophic or fatal,I have a lot of children, a lot of responsibility to other people-I will not take risks, this kind of risk is not justified-imho!

Will you go to the USA? The number of homicides per capita in Detroit, Washington, and other major American cities (1) is almost identical to that in Colombia (2).

As for the equipment-everyone is equipped with a minimum of comfort, which is different for everyone, for example, if you drive a lot,and you need to catch both day and night, then I, as a driver, must sleep, otherwise sleep will start in the wrong place-on the highway, for example.Next, I take gas and a tent under the kitchen-warehouse, near the screen the fire harms the light catch, hygiene items, kitchen utensils. If you add a gene, other equipment, a supply of gasoline,if for 4-7 days, in some separate biotope, for example, near Astrakhan or in the Caucasus, where species are not caught in the middle lane, a trip without a car, and one of the main aspects, without a good and well-coordinated team, will simply be impossible,or according to the results- unsuccessful, will not bring any positive results, there will be continuous difficulties and upsets.IMHO.

What does it mean to be a patriot?
See what's going on and hope for the best? So this is a rejection of reality!
Every day there are fewer and fewer adequate people responsible for words and actions. Life has turned into a show " well, try to guess where I lied to you."

As a non-smoker, besides using only gas for the last few years, I didn't really bother with the question of matches and lighters. But of course - in the package with the burner and lighter and matches in the condom lying around...
And then the flight, another country, decided not to take gas, to take with you only a burner on dry alcohol. And only after putting up a tent (in a place far from people), building a small fire in the evening, I found a lack of these small but useful things. The sun set surprisingly quickly, and the forest is quite dense - the magnifying glass did not help.
As luck would have it, I especially wanted something hot-from tea to soup. But there was no particular choice - I decided to just dilute the alcohol (the benefit was not only dry). In the process, I guessed - I moistened the cotton wool from the mattress, struck a spark, and then I had a normal dinner.
But now I have these lighters with me on a hike-about five of them in different pockets.

I don't smoke either, and I don't need to light bonfires, but matches should be taken from karakurts, it turns out, I was told that it seems that one ornithologist died from a bite, and there would have been matches..

The author of the linked article appears to be a prominent Colombian dissident.

04.04.2012 23:38, Hierophis

If you catch a karakurt-then you still need to try to make it bite. They bite just by accident, in the case that I described it was in the leg, they just can only bite through very thin skin, like the top of the foot, for example. And matches there would probably help.

Therefore, I will never wear sandals on such trips)))

The first picture is impressive!
I remembered a time when we went hunting in the spring. An open place, not a single tree around,a few swamp hummocks, mostly last year's grass flooded with water.
The cars were two UAZ trucks (the first one is like in the picture, the second one is a "tablet") and a GAZ 69 (who doesn't know - an old Soviet Jeep from the time of the Second World War).
When it rained, they started to get stuck - the first one was the "tablet", then another UAZ, and last of all GAZ 69, when I started trying to pull out the first two. And I must say in terms of maneuverability in that situation, it was much superior to the more modern Uazs.
However, I still had to go to the nearest village for help smile.gif

When you're safe, God will punish you for being too careful. When you don't have a safety net, it's for stupidity. In all other cases, it will punish you for your impudence. And if it doesn't punish you, it means it's waiting for you to relax... tongue.gif(this is a quote from a book)

Yes, indeed - when you go on a hike, take high-quality shoes right away. For example, shoes Timberland My shoes survived the chemical slush on the streets of St. Petersburg, the wet cold autumn of Vladivostok, the cold of Khanty-Mansiysk and Irkutsk, as well as the warm spring of the Volga region. That's why I prefer to pay a significant price for a pair of Timberland boots - they can easily tolerate any conditions, but I feel confident and comfortable in them.

Well, I don't know. For a hike on a flat terrain, humanity has not yet come up with better boots and footcloths for them!
