Volume, vessel shape, and throat size for the Malaise trap bottle

Actually, the subject.
Who uses malezes, please tell us which version of the vessel in the kit you would prefer:

1. Round cross-section
or
2. Square/rectangular cross-section?

3. 500 ml
or
4. With a volume of 1 l?

5. The inner diameter of the throat is 33 mm
or
6. The inner diameter of the throat is 45 mm?
or
7. The internal diameter of the nozzle is 58 mm?

And how important are these parameters to you?

1. Round
3. 500ml
7. 58ml

All parameters are important. The bank can be trapped for up to a month. In this case, of course, you need a second same jar screwed on top to prevent the evaporation of alcohol from the bottom.

Thank you for your comment. And the liter version is worse, in addition to the fact that it is less convenient to carry it with you? I see that Entosfixes use a liter. Although, perhaps, this is only due to the width of the throat, which is smaller in 500 ml cans...

For a month in the sun with a breeze, alcohol from any jar that insects can get into will evaporate, and so will water. And what the collected insects will turn into in the process of lowering the degree is scary to imagine.

I wonder why this did not happen even in Africa, where the traps stood for a month or even more. Probably because the people who made such traps of Maleza perfectly understood such a problem. It is solved by the design of a trap node with two banks. Google to help.

Maybe then equatorial Africa was with an air humidity close to 100%? But in this case, by the end of the month, the glass was no longer 70%(or more) alcohol, but a low-grade braga made from insects. I can perfectly imagine the Malaise trap glass without any Google, there are no obstacles to the diffusion of gases in it. Once insects enter (and, by the way, the entrance is quite wide, otherwise it will quickly get clogged), then gas molecules must exit along the concentration gradient - you can't trample on the laws of physics. Is that some kind of" smart " gateway to put, which opens for a short time when an insect approaches and immediately closes. But before that, the designers were not honored. Responsible collectors solve such problems simply: they do not leave traps (any) for such a colossal period of time. Irresponsible ones destroy thousands of insects for nothing. As far as Africa is concerned, I can't help but wonder how this huge, delicate contraption could have remained undamaged for so long in the wilderness - the animals are plentiful there. Yes, Africa, it would be in the rusakom forest for a month, the animals were torn up and the birds were taken away for nesting material, and with a high probability, a passerby could have made a fool of himself. This is the first time I have encountered such a strange collection method in terms of time parameters.

By the way, do you have any suggestions for the fabric? Should it pass air and be more or less clingy, like an Entosphinx or something else?

With such a fishing mode, which Proctos promotes - I put it on for a month and forgot - the main criterion should be super-strength (aramid, probablysmile.gif). If it is normal, it is invisible against the surrounding background and the size of the cell. The latter depends on who you are going to catch. With the same thread thickness, the larger the cell, the less visible the fabric, but the more likely it is to miss small fry.

It turns out, as with bags for nets. For small things-the cell is less than a millimeter (we now have 0.3-0.5 somewhere option), for large-more, in the area of 1-1. 5 mm?

And what kind of big fish are you going to catch with this trap?

12.08.2017 15:27, Peter Khramov

I'm going to edit the design of the maleses that we make, if that makes sense. From the phrase " cell size... it depends on who you are going to catch" I conclude that for small things and non-small things, it would be good to have two separate options (up to this point, we always had only one, but sometimes people asked for a bigger cell, sometimes a smaller one, so I would like to somehow settle all these preferences).

Well, I don't have any personal preferences in this regard - I don't use these weapons of mass indiscriminate destruction.

I took a simple mosquito net from the store. Both small and large all remain. As the so-called glasses, I use simple milk bottles, but only transparent by liter volume.Nothing evaporates either in the wind or in the sun. They cost akurats for a month. Now I'm analyzing the fees for last year, the quality is excellent.

In Belarus, perhaps, it does not evaporate, since there is, by and large, no wind or sun there. But it is still a genocide of entomofauna with low efficiency (as a percentage of all destroyed).

What kind of nonsense is this, how is there no wind and sun, where did it all go?The trap can be used to record biotopic differences in the taxonomic composition and seasonal dynamics of the insect population.
