Some species from tropical America have an organ of luminescence in the form of a pair of yellow spots on the pronotum and one spot on the abdomen below; in a large, 30-40 mm long, cuckoo (Pyrophorus noctilucus L.), the luminescence is so strong that it is enough to read at night [General Entomology; G. Ya. Beybienko, 1980] .

picture: kaa_001_s.jpgBeetles of the family Elateridae (Nutcrackers) have an elongated body, their prothorax is articulated with the rest of the body very mobile, the pronotum has characteristic elongated and pointed posterior lateral angles, the formula of the legs is 5-5-5 (all legs are five - jointed).
Larvae of beetles with a hard thin body are called wireworms, usually live in the ground and often harm underground parts of plants.
A distinctive feature of representatives of this family is the presence of a characteristic jumping organ (photo attached). The prothorax carries a backward protrusion between the farthest basins, resting against a notch on the mid-thorax. These beetles usually have rather short legs and, once on their backs, they can only roll over with the help of such a jumping device - by sharply bending the farts down, when the ledge jumps off the notch on the farts, which creates a push and is accompanied by a click.
The development of "nutcrackers" is slow - 3-5 years.

So where's Athous niger? I don't understand. Selatosomus aeneus - maybe.

23.06.2006 7:24, K. A. A.

In my little school guide, it is very similar to the Black Nutcracker, although you are probably right - the genus Athous has a slightly narrower pronotum compared to the elytra and its edges are not very pointed. Maybe it really is Selatosomus. Thank you.

23.06.2006 8:24, Dmitry Vlasov

It is neither Athous nor Selatosomus, but rather a member of the genus Ctenicera (formerly called Corymbites). For a more accurate definition, you need to know the place of photographing...

23.06.2006 12:48, K. A. A.

Saint Peterburg

24.06.2006 13:48, Dmitry Vlasov

Then it is a female crested-whiskered nutcracker-Ctenicera pectinicornis. And your "Elater" is now called Ampedus baltheatus.

24.06.2006 15:02, K. A. A.

Thank you.

I decided today to support this forgotten topic with views of the Moscow region.
Apparently, it was forgotten because they are quite difficult to define (I have a lot of undefined ones myself).
And in my opinion, these are quite interesting beetles.
3 species of the genus Ampedus:
1) Ampedus sanguineus Linnaeus, 1758. 03.05.1996 Moscow region, Balashikha district, near Kupavna station, under the spruce bark.
2) Ampedus sanguinolentus Schrank, 1776. 13.06.1999 Moscow region, Balashikha district, near the village of Poltevo, on the umbrella.
3) Ampedus balteatus Linnaeus, 1758. 18.05.2005 Moscow region, Lyuberetsky district, Torbeevo village, on birch tinder.

Ampedusov would be nice more, and with an enlarged image of the surface of the sides of the pronotum, and the price would not be such a photo.

Yes, I have such a camera, but there are still ampeduses (undefined). They are lying here: http://molbiol.ru/forums/index.php?showtopic=201250 Take a look, please.

No, that's just me, everyone's wish. Thank you for the photo. And I probably can't do without the volume of Fauna of the USSR (Guryev).

Athous haemorrhoidalis. By the way, if the founder of the theme doesn't mind, its name should be corrected by removing (Elater Balteatus, Ctenicera pectinicornis and Agriotes lineatus). smile.gif
