How common is convexus in the Nizhny Novgorod region?
It is very rare in the Moscow region.

14.03.2007 9:10, Aleksandr Safronov

It is also rare in the adjacent Tula region. In general, the species is sporadic throughout its range. Most often I fell into traps in the Volgograd region, the Olkhovsky district, the Ilovlya River, the border of the floodplain mixed forest. But for 2 years (the traps were in the total time of about 2 weeks), only 6 copies were caught.

On the territory of Russia, the subgenus is represented by 3 species marginalis, convexus, and bessarabicus.
Tomocarabus marginalis Fabricius, 1794-15.VIII.2001, Grafskoe, Voronezh region, oak forest.
The beetle is distributed in deciduous forests in the south of the forest and in the forest-steppe zone. From Poland-Romania in the west to Zap. Siberia in the east. The range is limited to mixed forests in the north and steppe in the south (i.e., no further south than the North). Rostov region).

I wonder if marginalis can live in the Bessarabian lands?

Mmm, I can't say. Unfortunately, I don't have any information on Moldova for this species. It may happen in the north of the republic.

Carabus (Tomocarabus) bessarabicus ? concretus Fischer, 1823
female, 22 mm
E Ukraine, Lugannsk Reg., Sverdlovskdistr., Steppe Reserve "Provalsky" 3. V-3. VI. 2011, Glotov S. leg. /det. Panin R.
This population differs markedly in overall body elongation from the southern Ukrainian nominative population. I refer them to bessarabicus concretus.
Thus, this subspecies is indicated for the first time from Ukraine.

I would not be in a hurry yet without studying the genitals and look at the shape of the lamella Ruslan-it is extremely different in these subspecies. They need to be dealt with. Even in the Crimea, there are 2 sharply defined populations of edeagus structure. The Foros mountains are unlike anything else, and the structure of the edeagus is also isolated in the Dagestani population and the bag. from Chatyrdag and other yayla to the east are similar to the nominative. Yours do not differ much from the serial material from the yayl and foothills (I have viewed more than 40 copies from all over the arel) - they are elongated. and the subspecies concretus-it is practically devoid of microsculpture in comparison with the nominative and even more graceful.

this form of beetles reaches the Ciscaucasia - they are in coll. and only in the eastern Caucasus and the Volga region there is a replacement for concretus

Here, in my opinion, the entire taxon needs to be more thoroughly revised. confused.gif
Compared with the Kherson barrel-shaped ones. They differ greatly.
Yes, and from Russia in all catalogs, like the nominative is not specified. And these beetles are practically caught near the border.

I agree - that the entire taxon needs to be shaken up - and probably there are more than 2 taxa in it. but it is better to see them in reality, and then maybe these photos are not quite successful ( in the Crimea only 2 and they are not barrel-shaped)

As a student, on a night walk around the dorm, I was struck by the abundance of small ground beetles with a bluish coating on the edge of the elytra and back. There is a small series from Ozernoye, in the Tver region, I understand this is convexus?, there is no one else to be.
