Subgenus Megodontus (Carabus)

Community and ForumInsects imagesSubgenus Megodontus (Carabus)

Nilson, 20.03.2007 14:16

Various representatives of this subgenus have already been discussed in the thread devoted, it seems, to the classification and definition of loci, so this topic is just an addition. The subgenus includes large and beautiful beetles. In the fauna of Russia (according to the updated list of ZIN) - 5 species: vietinghoffi, violaceus, aurolimbatus, exaratus, septemcarinatus.

Megodontus violaceus adrzejuscii, Fisch. 1823-Zap. Ukraine, Ivano-Frankivsk region, roc. Kosova, 17-27. VII. 2000
The beetle is distributed mainly in Europe, up to the western regions of Russia, in forests. Very changeable.

Great, damn it!

Before offering the moderator a question to the participants-can you still drag already posted photos of the genus Carabus to the designated subgenus?
Well, leave the topics of the Crimea and the Carpathians unchanged (duplicate photos)???
To be honest, I don't even want to "spoil" the subgenus made by Nilson with my lame photos. wall.gif

Absolutely! In the meantime, for a snack, a view that I don't quite understand. It appears either as an independent species or as a subspecies of M.violaceus. Or am I confusing something?

The French have the most fractional taxonomy of the genus Carabus. In general, according to the list of Brzeziny - the species violaceus ssp. purpurascens, the rest are individual forms that the French are very fond of specifying. Although, for some French people, this taxon is indicated as an independent species.

I looked up the taxonomy of the Carabus violaceus taxon in the Deuve catalog (also French, by the way). The layout is as follows-60 subspecies!!! confused.gif I won't list it, it will take up a lot of space. The main mass of subspecies is Europe.
However, in the preface to the catalog in the section "taxonomy", he says that there are the main generally accepted ("strong") subspecies-they are highlighted. The rest - as if secondary ("weak"). bicinctus is a secondary subspecies, purpurascens is a primary subspecies. Thus, the spelling of this taxon will be-Carabus (Megodontus) violaceus ssp. purpurascens F., 1787, however, indicates that if desired (in relation to this case), you can use this option - Carabus (Megodontus) violaceus (purpurascens) bicinctus Born, 1905 This absolutely does not contradict the international code (ICZN). So choose the option you like!

I already saw this page two years ago, but I think the address changed after that. So your reference for this subgenus is quite appropriate! Here is a classic example of taxonomy in the French:

I can't say for sure. The mentioned forms are indicated by V. G. Shilenkov in his book "Ground beetles of the genus Carabus of Southern Siberia". Ab. melanchlorus, ab. gouberti, except for the type form are found sympatrically. Two slightly evasive subspecies, ssp. sajanus Breuning, 1927 and ssp. chakassicus Obydov, 1995, inhabit the Sayan Mountains. I don't know if the standard form is found with them. Judging by the check lists-yes.

No one has a photo of Carabus gebleri F.-W. (it also seems to belong to the subgenus Megodontus). From the territory of Russia is unlikely, but at least from Kazakhstan, where the species was found not so long ago.
