There is a bit of mystery about swamp butterflies, just like in the swamps themselves.

I don't know anything about butterflies. But the photo is just great. So I want to do more and butterflies. Thanks!

And in your places in the Leningrad region, by the way, the marshes are pretty.

I love swamps, they are interesting, green, beautiful, with a variety of interesting vegetation. Marsh butterflies are also cool, especially "paleno" looks beautiful. Thanks!

By the way.. is optics so rare? It should be normal confused.gif

Well, that's how I wrote the word "rarities" in the quotation marks.
Vaccininia optilete is not a very common butterfly. In the Moscow region, it is very local. However, where it lives, it is usually numerous.
The same applies to other Bolton inhabitants. The only thing-Colias palaeno did not please with the quantity, but it is not so little.
The upper swamp in Terelesovsky (Tver region) is divided into two parts by a pine mane.
On one such part (where cranberries are full) Boloria aquilonaris flew en masse, on the other-one or two.
C. palaeno males flew almost everywhere, fast and quite high, feeding on the flowers growing on their manes. We met the females on the other side of the swamp. It was enough to wait at a good blueberry bush and you could grab a female laying eggs. By the way, females are very fond of hiccup flowers.
Vaccinia optilete was found en masse throughout the swamp, but there was no sign of it anywhere outside the swamp.
In addition to these species, Heteropterus morpheus and Coenonympha hero were collected.

And the cloudberries are there!!! (however, it was still unripe)

Yes, we have nice swamps. I catch ants there - interesting forms come across.

For a complete collection, Coenonympha tullia is not enough, and pictures of preimaginal stages would also be useful. I will try to look for the preimaginals of tullia, optilete, Aquilonaris and Paleno in my swamp in the Ramenskoye district. If the search is successful, I'll post the pictures later.

Oeneis jutta-the pearl of the swamps!
And for completeness, this topic also lacks Proclossiana eunomia, Clossiana titania, Coenonympha hero and many others.

Peatland jaundice (Colias palaeno europome)...

europome Esper is a rich yellow form (not a subspecies) of the male C. palaeno described from Central Europe. The picture shows a typical male of the nominative subspecies.

We also have Boloria (Clossiana) frigga, Boloria (Clossiana) freija, Boloria (Proclossiana) eunomia ossianus, and even Triphysa dohrnii albovenosa in the Trans-Ural upland swamps. All but the last species are also found in the north of the European part, including in Karelia and near St. Petersburg.

I must admit, Pavel, that the picture with C. palaeno turned out to be somewhat illuminated, which is why it's a little confusing. And the specimen is large, and the color is bright yellow, and the border is pure black.
Here, there will be more decent photo equipment, then I will really turn around.

Clossiana titania and Coenonympha hero cannot be attributed to the Arctoboreal group of species (which are usually considered "swamp rarities"smile.gif) - the range and biotopic location of these species are completely different. So, titania in our zone is usually found in wet meadows, C. hero lives in different biotopes. Other northern species, such as Clossiana freija and frigga, are very likely to be found in large swamp areas in our area (for example, in the same Batkovskoe swamp). For example, in Belarus (Minsk region) in the 80s, several populations of these species were found (plus O. jutta and the arctoboremont Slossiana thore).

05.08.2007 22:44, Pavel Morozov

I should take a closer look at the Vyshnevolotsky marshes, if possible, maybe something will also open up. Oh, the Eneis for sure. As for the swamp where the pictures came from, we haven't even half explored it, and there is even a lake inside that swamp.

05.08.2007 22:51, lepidopterolog

Yes, the swamp is extremely interesting, very similar to the habitat of the jutta in the Batkovsky swamp. The abundance of fluff is a good sign: Eriophora polystachion and vaginatum are some of Jutta's forage plants. In search of Jutta and other things to go there is best at the end of May or early June, I think that for sure there will be something interesting. You can try to organize a joint expeditionwink.gif.

Yes, this is the case. The earliest time I visited there was on June 18, theoretically, the remains of Jutta could be found. C. tullia was not found, despite the abundance of fluff everywhere - on swamps, peat maps, along the banks of the Vyshnevolotsky reservoir. We have seen a lot of mountain snake, you can try your luck to catch P. eunomia.
We will not make a guess, but we must keep in mind.
Damn, with a generator and a light bulb would go there.

And, in general, I personally am in favor of joint expeditions! beer.gif

Marsh species (more precisely, boreal ones) are very promising in the middle zone for CC topics!!!
Whenever possible, we try to explore such relict biotopes for us. So for C. tullia, Andrey Tatarinov asked me to shoot my collections for this species by number - and well, this rare (with an extremely small number) species turned out to be VERY variable in color and eyes! Even in the same population, butterflies (according to the picture) are different by year!!? It is simply impossible to photograph this species in nature here! What do caterpillars develop on? Most likely on cereals... Alas, we don't have palaeno, although a couple of blueberry outlets still exist. Yes, we found eunomia - very locally! and years are only a couple of weeks away! biotope where chervonets gella... otoshol chervonets look for the first eunomies (late May-early June) on hot days!

On the opelette pigeon-what is its behavior in the biotope? Any observations??

They fly under the forest canopy, on paths and clearings. They don't fly far from the edge of the forest. All this, of course, in the presence of a swamp. The flight is not fast, the startled one does not fly far. They sit on bushes (usually not high) and grass. They feed on flowers, I didn't notice any special preferences. Actually, I can't say anything more, I didn't conduct any special observations.

I think that the haymarket is also a hog that feeds on this buttercup flower sp. he doesn't even know that he has a monetary equivalent in the world of gomo sapiens.
- in the middle zone, it is rare, found only in moist, well-warmed meadows of pine forests and mixed forests of the boreal type. In the CC of the Penza region, so far only in the lists of " Requiring attention..." Only 4 populations are known, and the northern neighbors are already on the pages of the Red Books...

mikee -
and what is your optetta flying in cranberry swamps? Estimate our blueberry fields by the wet (former swamps probably) boreal biotopes that have been preserved in some places in the forests (but very rarely! although there are enough places for blueberries to grow). And where else in the swamps there are cranberries - I did not find this species!? So much for atropogenesis...

In the Tver region, on a high swamp with cranberries and blueberries, as well as on a high swamp in the Shatursky district of the Moscow Region. Not far from the PTZ - in a clearing of mixed forest next to a swamp. In the Taldomsky district (Meldino) - on a clearing with a growth of blueberries and lingonberries.
Coenonympha hero was found both in meadows and glades near the upper swamps (Taldomsky district), and directly in the upper swamp (Tver region, Volochek village).

Symptomatic: no matter how much we talk here about the nonsense of all sorts of CC, but to people who are aspiring like water from a goose: a person is still only interested in how the most banal swamp bulavousy behave and where they fly at all, but already knows that they are promising for CC topics!!! A very accurate word is chosen - promising...

By the way, the pro - "Delirium of red books" branch is located on a slightly different branch...

That's EXACTLY how much we talk: we struggle with the ossified worldviews of broad-minded environmentalists, who are still there... In the same Yaroslavl region, until recently, they did not pay attention to "swamp consumer goods" - and when they caught themselves, then ... shed a tear (at least take a look at their CC). Maxim even wrote about this in his blog. Very accurately, the word bodobrano is symptomatic...

I recall a funny story when I sent letters to collectors and experienced butterfly collectors in the Volga region asking them to inform me about cases of catching "the most banal swamp mace" (I am already silent about "how they behave") in their places of residence. You know what they said to me. "And why? Go to the taiga and catch them there as fast as you want... " It's much easier for them to catch a bunch of steppe rarities... Remember in "Tales" when the Mongol was asked: "Why don't you fish? And why - we have sheep."..

Skoka times you can repeat-the CC theme is just the tip of the iceberg-for example, I am more interested in the theme that Fridolin developed in St. Petersburg.

I may repeat myself, but the Red Books are just a tool for preserving native nature! And remember what Prishvin said - " to love nature means to love the motherland."

04.02.2010 17:45, Alexandr Rusinov

Can you tell us more about what exactly we shed a tear about in the Yaroslavl region? And the aforementioned Maxim should leave the city more often and visit the swamps. Perhaps then his opinion about the real rarity of some "swamp rarities" would have changed a lot...
