Probably other hawkmoths look at them and think "what are you, morons, it's not possible to fly with such people" lol.gif

Other hawkmothers probably look at them and think, " What are you, morons, it's not possible to fly with such people?" lol.gif

And they answered them: "Fuck you, but it's beautiful!" lol.gif

Oh, these lovers of dried grass! If you're going to post a photo, it should be a live copy.

Personally, I deal with hawkmoth and pay special attention to the preimaginal stages. All the specimens in my collection were obtained from caterpillars reared in captivity, and some species were kept in culture for several years.

So let's get started. Many people here dream of seeing Langia zenzeroides, but I have the good fortune to observe not only live butterflies, but also caterpillars.

A pair of Hemaris fuciformis. It's not something you see every day. In this case, the male was attracted to a female obtained in the laboratory. Such pairs can also fly, and the female can also feed.

And who said that this branch has a strict restriction on subfamilies? If I overlooked it, then sorry for the offtop.

16.02.2008 0:53, Hemaris

to Hemaris: Thanks for the photos, but Daphnis nerii, Acherontia atropos, and Hemaris tityus belong to the subfamilies Macroglossinae, Acherontinae, and Dilophonotinae, respectively.

Oh, by the way, where did you count so many subfamilies? The taxa listed by you are tribes and end with-ini. And there are only 3 subfamilies: Sphinginae, Smerinthinae, and Macroglossinae.

Dear Hemaris,
a question about the color of gus. Daphnis nerii (Crimea, 2002). Was it photographed just before the pupation process started, when it had already changed color, or was it still that color?
I explain my question - I met 2 copies somewhere on 50-60 caterpillars. orange color in life, not green (it was in Sukhumi in September 1993, got on a mass" crawled " tracks, saved from the feet of vacationers. And they met all ages)

16.02.2008 23:14, Hemaris

No, this is one of the color morphs. When breeding in captivity, the proportion of caterpillars with this color was about 15%.

Very nice, Hemaris. I understand that you also breed hawkmoth in culture, which feed in the adult phase? How do you solve the feeding problem? What is the minimum size of the room for natural feeding of hawkmoth? Do you have a death's head culture?

18.02.2008 12:23, Hemaris

Yes, I breed species of hawk moth, the imagos of which feed. I feed butterflies manually with a pipette, so the size of the room or cage doesn't really matter. Acherontia atropos was kept in culture for three years. Temporarily refused sodederzhaniya in connection with the problem associated with wintering pupae. In addition, death's head pupae are very bad at handling mail, especially in summer and winter. This year I'm going to try this look again for aesthetic purposes.
