Only he is still in the genus Agrius now. If you need modern combinations - then here I am Sirotkin's list re-rolled with additions and corrections.

And to me it seems to be a hawk moth with eyes, because the poplar head is smooth, without "warts", like this one.

The fact that Nizhny poplar is unequivocal. I can't say for sure about the top two, so I'll wait to see what the others have to say.

"Dear Vitaly Ivanovich,
why do you consider the bottom photo to be L. populi?"

"Because of the double row of eyes"

If my memory serves me correctly, there are also ocular hawks with this pattern.
Below is a photo of such a caterpillar from the Internet.

Hemaris fuciformis is a honeysuckle bumblebee. In addition, the caterpillars of the scabiose bumblebee never live on honeysuckle.

28.02.2008 10:41, Hemaris

What is the dispute about? I have already confirmed that the caterpillar in the picture is Smerinthus ocellathus. For comparison, I offer a snapshot of Laothoe populi.

But the worm is from Hemaris fuciformis, the correct worm. And the Russian name is a trifle, only for "dummies".

28.02.2008 14:02, NicoSander

This one's definitely scabiose. It was found on a bark stand at the end of June 2007 in the Kaduysky district of the Vologda region in the village of Pakino.
