Grigory Grigoryev, 03.11.2007 23:13

I offer you a gallery of the bears of our former Homeland and, if possible, its near and distant environs.
I can't imagine all the fauna (for obvious reasons), so please help! Caterpillars, pupae, butterflies; in nature and collectible material-all good.

I'll start with the classics-Arctia caja
pair from Tuva, bred from tracks
35 km CCC Kyzyl 1999

What are the characteristics that clearly distinguish the first 3 subspecies?

03.11.2007 23:32, Grigory Grigoryev

Arctia caja from Southern Kyrgyzstan Alai horseradish.

According to the area of the subspecies pamiroalaica, but it is doubtful, because according to the description of the hindwings should be yellow (see Murzin VS The tiger moths)

"By what characteristics do the first 3 subspecies clearly differ?"

TO AntSkr: dear Anton, this butterfly is very variable in color, you need to watch the series. Therefore, it probably doesn't make sense to search for differences based on posted photos right now. See the work of Murzin and the work of V. V. Dubatolov.
I can only say that the butterflies in the yard are very large (I already wrote about the color).
As for Siberia, it is the butterflies from the Sayan Mountains that stand out from the whole mass (let's say, with their variegation)
And the rest of the South Siberian ones, if you mix them with European ones, you can't tell without labels, which one comes from (I mean the nominative)

According to the current taxonomy, bears include lichens and false pox, so the field for activity increases significantly... All photos are from the south of the Ozuyevsky district of the Moscow region, unless otherwise indicated. When I didn't have a camera, I met Phragmatobia fuliginosa there, and this summer Atolmis rubricollis left me, not wanting to pose.

And which of the two dippers can appear in the MO, and which one already exists: Arctia flavia and villica?

The second one is located in the Moscow Region (see Sirotkin's list), and the first one seems to be located in the north...

Epicallia villica
From Talysh (Azerbaijan) is a subspecies of confluens characterized by its characteristic coloration.
The photos show ex. from Talysh:
1. Lerik June 2005
2. Lenkoran "Hyrkan Forest" May 1975

It can be seen that only from Lenkoran the appearance of the butterfly corresponds to the description of the subspecies, while the second one does not. very similar to a butterfly from Armenia: Vayk May 1997.
By the way, Transcaucasian butterflies, not counting confluens, are not separated into a separate subspecies and are considered nominative.

Butterfly from Crimea (nominative) - Faros May 1983

Eastern Caucasus. It is still known from the Lower Volga region and the Southern Urals (in the latter case, the indications are not of the first freshness) - but there it is obviously a migrant.

Here are some interesting collections from the Bureinsky Reserve:

Pararctia lapponica (Thunberg, 1791) ssp. lemniscata, male, 10. VII. 2004, Russia, Khabarovsk Krai, Verkhnebureinsky district, Bureinsky Nature Reserve, upper reaches of the Nieman River, 3 km north-east of the winter camp “Nieman” (“Pavlovskoe"), 1200 m above sea level.

Platarctia atropurpurea (O. Bang-Haas, 1927) ssp. atropurpurea, female, 5. VII. 2004, Russia, Khabarovsk Krai, Verkhnebureinsky district, Bureinsky Nature Reserve, upper reaches of the Right Bureya River, Medvezhye wintering area, 900 m above sea level.

The same species, male, 18. IX. 2004, ibid., exit of a butterfly from a pupa in laboratory conditions.

I can't say for sure, because the collection is not at hand right now. Offhand - Pararctia lapponica is about 45 mm, and Platarctia atropurpurea is slightly smaller, about 35-40 mm.

Since dear Ekos gave me the topic, I will add a little:
Platarctia atropurpurea. The first time I met her was in the Altai region. Aktash, caught in the light of the former mercury mine, though then it was still working (all entomologists of the former Union, I think, know this place). There were enough males flying.

In the photos of a butterfly made up of 4 dots:
1. Altai, Kurai region, middle current of the Yarly-Airy river rt. rudnik, 2200 m, June 28, 1992-male
2. Tuva, khv. V. Tanu-Ola, 1700 m, June 2004-female
3. V. Sayan, okr. Mondy, Khulugaisha, 2400 m, ovo June 20, 2002 (2 females were caught in the afternoon, one gave a clutch), bab. hatched in September of the same year-a female.

BY the way, a question for Ekos: what is the percentage of butterfly output without wintering?

4. North Chita region, khr. Kodar, Chara, July 20, 1999-male

I remember that about 15 butterflies were hatched, and there were also females. My friend brought it out, it's already been a while, I'll call him, check it out. I probably didn't put it quite right: I realized that no one overwintered, I wanted to know what percentage reached the butterflies, including all losses.
And the article, of course, is interesting, thank you!

P.S. according to all the rules, the caterpillar should winter
