Photos of ground beetles in nature (Coleoptera, Carabidae)

Community and ForumInsects imagesPhotos of ground beetles in nature (Coleoptera, Carabidae)

Shooting most ground beetle species not in the collection on a pin, but directly in natural conditions in nature is quite a challenge. Although such images are often much more informative for identifying the species (of course, high-quality).
I suggest that you post pictures of ground beetles that you managed to take in nature, in their habitats, in this topic.
For priming, I'll post a few of my own.

1. Cardioderus chloroticus (Fischer von Waldheim 1823). Pogonini.

In addition, they can be printed in A5-A3 format, then the insects are even more spectacular. And you can also collect pictures of beetles instead of copies - I chose this path, only, probably, it is only suitable for aesthetics. For science, insect specimens are much more interesting than photographs.

I shoot with a Canon 400D camera with a Sigma AF 50/2.8 EX DG MACRO lens. As a rule, I use a built-in flash with a diffuser, the simple design of which can be viewed in the photo (thanks to evk) in my profile.
I used to shoot on the Olympus SP-500 UZ compact-a pretty decent camera, but its macro capabilities can't be compared to those provided by a SLR camera with a special macro lens.

Well, I have the same camera as the wise snake, but a Canon EF 100 mm macro lens and a Canon SL 580 EXII flash with a homemade diffuser. Before that, I shot a Minolta Z5. I must say that for screen resolution, advanced soap dishes can make very decent shots in macro. Naturally, after competent work with the FSHwink.gif smile.gif, well, it depends very much on the hands in which the camera is located and the eyes that choose the frame wink.gif wink.gif wink.gif

I'll post photos that are less popular, rather monotonous, but no less interesting (for me smile.gif) ground beetles of the genus Harpalus.
At the same time, they are terribly unsuitable for high-quality photos live due to the twilight-night lifestyle, mobility and unwillingness to appear in the open. frown.gif
Harpalus distinguendus (Duftschmid 1812). One of the most banal, widespread and widespread species of the genus.
Volgograd, 25.10.2008.
picture: Harp_disting.jpg

Harpalus rufipes (De Geer 1774). No less banal and widespread everywhere view. Russian name-ground beetle hairy.
Ocd. Volgograd, 28.06.2008.
picture: Harpalus_rufipes.jpg

Harpalus affinis (Schrank 1781). Also a widespread and numerous species, but more common in the middle zone. It differs well from similar ones in the thin pubescence of the posterior half and sides of the elytra. Because of what it looks so "izvalyavshim" - grains of sand are stuck in the pubescence.
picture: Harp_affinis.jpg

Harpalus tardus (Panzer 1797). It is more common in the south in the steppe and forest-steppe zone, but it is also found almost everywhere. The appearance is typical for most species of the genus and is hardly distinguishable for a layman.
Volgograd region, Mikhailovsky district, floodplain of the Medveditsa River, 12.05.2009.
picture: Harpalus_tardus.jpg

Harpalus flavescens (Piller et Mitterpacher 1783). One of the few species of the genus that can be easily identified by its appearance and habitat. It lives mainly on the coastal sands of river terraces.
Volgograd region, Alekseyevsky district, bank of the Khoper River near Ust-Buzulukskaya village, 5.10.2007.

From this angle, I can't say for sure either. Not very similar in proportions. I'll post the exact number today.

09.10.2009 18:05, evk

Harpalus zabroides Dejean 1829.
Volgograd region, Dubovsky district, Polunino village district, 13.06.2008. The species belongs to a group whose species are noticeably larger than most members of the genus (12-14 mm). IMHO, it is easily recognized "in person" even without binoculars, but in our region, where there is no similar one anymore.

Now, after looking at both of them, I came to the conclusion that with a probability of 90% you have not taken zabroides, but H. froelichi Sturm 1818. It is very common in our region.

Well, and also from the Harpalus "at hand"
Harpalus rubripes (Duftschmid 1812). Trans-palearctic view. It is not uncommon throughout the entire territory of Russia and not only. It differs quite well from similar types (for me). Males have a bright metallic blue, blue or blue-green sheen on top, females are almost opaque, black-brown, less often with a weak metallic sheen; legs are always reddish-red. There's a male here.

Another dynamic episode of the hunt of Carabus hungaricus for the black melon (Tentyria nomas). This is from the same series of images that oditn posted above. I took a lot of pictures, but since the couple were rolling around in the grass, which made it difficult to shoot, most of the pictures were not quite suitable for showing.

Bembidion argenteolum - two forms, bronze and blue.

The first is Calosoma denticolle! Pay attention - the hind legs are straight, although this is a male. And the second one is really auropunctatum - the hind legs are strongly curved. Well, the sculpture of the elytra aisles and their proportions are different (you can see, however, it's disgusting).
