I didn't find any topics on this group of aquatic coleoptera on the forum, so I decided to open a new one.
Representatives of this family are mainly near-water inhabitants. Adult beetles and larvae live in wet sand or mud along the banks of various types of water bodies (fresh and often brackish), larvae make burrows; adults and larvae are herbivorous, consuming algae and, apparently, dead remains of plant origin. Pupation occurs in a mud cocoon (Kireichuk, 2001). Adults actively fly to the light.
The coloration of species is highly variable, and sometimes their determination is problematic; reliable determination is largely possible only when studying the genitals of males. Therefore, I think it will be interesting to track the various color options of representatives of this family.
I'll probably start with one of the most common types we have -
Heterocerus (Heterocerus) fenestratus (Thunberg, 1784)
The species is found along the coasts of various reservoirs
