Why go near Sochi, much easier somewhere near Tuapse, in the area
of Semashkho, last year in early April was, alankastria flew there in heaps... I'll go there after tomorrow, set traps, check just in time for late March or early April... If you are interested, I will be happy to show you the places.

I followed the link and found the following: "... The summer of Allancastria in the Western Caucasus begins at the end of March and continues until the beginning of June. As with some other butterflies, allancastria females appear later than males, from which they are distinguished by a more contrasting dark pattern. Males are much less common than females, preferring shaded hollows overgrown with kirkazon."

I suspect that this is a typo, that females are much less common, but still... Can someone familiar with the biology of the species dispel my last doubts?

According to my observations, females are found just in more shaded areas, and males prefer forest edges, open slopes, etc. I fished in mid-April directly in Sochi (Bytkha) and in the surrounding area. Katkov's Gap (in general, also refers to Sochi), and the butterflies were no longer quite fresh.

This is a typo.Naturally, males are more visible .They fly in search of females as in most Parnasinae / Zarinthinae. When fishing for alankastria deuroli, the ratio was 12:1. I am sure that the ratio is better with Caucasians, but still males can be seen better.

I thought so. Thanks!

- Thank you all for the clarification.
- At our KMV-esh polixena, which I go for once a year in the period between 15/04-10/05, - to the Debri station (55 minutes by train from Pyatigorsk), where it flies in a mass right next to the railway - also females are much less common than males (I will not say the proportion); - but this is also relative to the time of summer. - If anyone needs this view - place orders.
- By the way, I can also offer a guest program... - but this is probably unrealistic, - since, first of all, it is far from Russia; - and secondly, probably in the middle lane there are such hot spots.
- And the offer of Dorcadion-and most likely I will be happy to use it.

I will wait beer.gif
As for the biology of the species, I noticed the following: they fly only when the sun is shining, you go along a forest road, no one, just the sun came out they fly from everywhere, just have time to swing the net... tongue.gif wink.gif Females are certainly less common, but in a normal ratio, and about the summer stretches, in early April there were broken specimens, and somewhere in a month, 700 meters higher, fresh females were caught... shuffle.gif

Hello friends!I think where to go(in mind either the Crimea or Astrakhan, the second half of July). I would like to know about Astrakhan, how are things with coleoptera there in general? Is the coleoptera fauna of those places diverse? Thanks!

25.02.2009 15:44, RippeR

In Crimea, the second half of July, as far as I know, is very dry, with yellow grass. Therefore, it should not be very bad with beetles ( Although some barbels are already beginning to fly to the light. But there shouldn't be many bonuses.

In Astrakhan, I think the situation is better, although I've never been there, so I won't say anything useful )

25.02.2009 19:51, okoem

...tell me if anyone has experience how to survey a large area( by biotopes or square nesting method)?
I have experience.
If you are interested in finding the maximum number of species, then of course by biotope. And if you want to cover the map of the region as evenly as possible with points of finds, then you understand wink.gif

Andrey, in July you need to climb yayly - it's green and joyful there, the height of the insect season. smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

The density of the insect population on yayla is sometimes simply amazing. Pictured is Yayla Severnaya Demerdzhi, July 18, 2005. Aphantopus hyperantus mass fly . Such oregano bushes covered the entire vast plateau. eek.gif

In the Astrakhan region at this time, the heat is much wilder than in the Crimea. The remains of terrestrial life are preserved only along water smile.gifbodies and, in principle, there is very little woody vegetation, and the vegetation itself is not very diverse. But, probably, it all depends on the units of interest.

The steppe blooms in April, the gardens-in early May, then everything is flooded with water nafig... smile.gif When the water subsides, wild clouds of midges and mosquitoes fly out. And then everything burns to the ground, flocks of flies fly and the heat is released only by September. Are you interested in beetles? In the spring, under each lantern - a carpet of water lovers, on the steppe walk blackbirds, and high water carries all sorts of animals, including scarabs and tarantulas. In the autumn, copra and some other dung flies fly to the light. I'm not an expert on beetles, I only write about the ones I met there. The local population strongly complains about the bronzes eating the ripening grapes...

I was looking at information about airline discounts.in Venezuela, you can
take back about 18 thousand rubles. in South Africa, even cheaper.maybe someone will immediately
change their plans for 2009) many people dream,
seize the moment!moreover, for Russians, a Venezuelan visa is not needed since March,
(for me, as a Ukrainian, everything is more difficult, for example)

Hi!
If you are serious about Venezuela and South Africa, I will be happy to join you. Write in PM, we will discuss the details.

Unfortunately, I'm not going, I just paid attention to this information, let those who wish not miss the opportunity, the visa issue is not as simple for me as for a Russian.

Which flights and which airline? The price is somewhat implausible. ~400 euros. Except that this is a "one-time promotion".

Lufthansa, there seems to be more and Airfrance like that. These routes are being actively discussed at travel forums.

Last year Iberia Moscow-Madrid-Lima and back ~ $ 2000. And it's not expensive. Since then, prices have increased (in pupaars tongue.gif)

Actually, I'm more interested in the south-eastern direction now, but in good company, you can also go to South America again. By the way, for information, in the South American direction is best - KLM. That Peru, that Ecuador, that Guiana-all repeatedly checked. Air France can delay luggage for a week, or even lose it altogether, Iberia and Lufthansa are not bad, but they are more expensive than KLM and more seriously inspect luggage and hand luggage for drugs. you can guess why. And KLM flights are now just a fairy tale. If earlier in the direction of Lima it was necessary to be about 10-14 hours in Chiphol (Amsterdam airport), now I flew to Amsterdam from Moscow and literally in 2 hours I am already in the air to Lima. In addition, I don't really like the food on the above airlines, and everything at KLM is so delicious that you can lick your fingers, cakes , yoghurts, sausages of all kinds, and only 777 Boeings fly in that direction with individual monitors and cool movies and games packed to the eyeballs, in case there is no portable DVD. So according to my personal experience and the experience of my friends, KLM is still a favorite in terms of both price and quality.

Now tickets to Vladivostok and back for July will cost from 17,000 rubles, for 21 thousand quite a decent company. When Vladimir called me these prices a couple of days ago, I didn't really believe it, so I decided to look at the Domodedovo website and made sure.

The cool thing is that these prices are still the same right now. If you buy tickets in June, the price for them in 2008 reached 40 thousand rubles. Just in time for Lima and back. Don't forget that you live in Russia.
