I also lost a screw with my dissertation once. Couldn't restore, spent a month on a new set. At the same time, some of the literature was lost.
Now essentially for everyone:
1. viruses do not spread through text files, jpeg bmp tiff images, etc. audio wav, mp3, ogg, video mpg. These files may be destroyed by a virus, but they are not virus distributors. ANYONE WHO SAYS THAT THE VIRUS PASSES THROUGH IMAGES, MUSIC, ETC. IS MISTAKEN, IT'S ALL NIGHTMARES.
2. Viruses often reside in self-extracting archives. in MS Office documents, viruses can be found in VB scripts, but the package usually warns about the presence of scripts and suggests disabling them. .
3. Viruses don't appear on their own. The only way to get a virus is to run the executable module. Unfortunately, the Windows system uses autorun by default, as a result of sticking a flash drive, you automatically get a virus on your computer (the system runs an executable module with the virus).
4. The presence of an antivirus program, of which there are a lot, DOES NOT GUARANTEE protection from viruses. Programmers in my organization wrote programs that were completely ignored by antivirus programs, but the programs were very unfriendly.
5. one of the most common ways to get a virus is to visit a site of questionable content with a Java script running on the user's machine, as well as view the content of an html email of questionable content with a Java script.
6.Launching a self-extracting archive is dangerous.

so a tip for anyone who doesn't want to be infected:
1. The radical way: use the Linux OS. This system is open source, viruses are extremely rare in it (I know of several linux system viruses). Contrary to popular opinion, this system has everything you need for work, it supports 90% of the capabilities of Windows OS.
2. if switching to Linux is not possible, then disable java scripts in the browser and set the text message display in the mail client.
3. disable autorun
4. do not unpack self-extracting archives that you are not sure about.

if you think you are infected:
1. don't panic don't reboot
2. we write all the necessary information to a separate disk or flash drive (with the exception of distributions .exe files) When recording, we do not archive anything, but write it as it is.
3. after all the information is reserved, format the ENTIRE disk and reinstall the system (preferably Linux).
4. we do everything possible to avoid being infected (see above) and begin to disassemble the backup back.

I hope I did not waste my time writing such a number of letters in vain, and the tips will help you save a certain number of nerve cells.

I completely switched to Linux a couple of years ago. Children suffer: most toys are not delivered. But I forgot about viruses and antivirus programs. And it also warms the soul that you can not break the law, making do with free programs instead of pirated ones. Which I do. I can't say, however, that everything is so smooth. First, it is more difficult to configure Linux than Windows, although I have a fairly friendly distribution (Mandriva 2008.1). Secondly, application software that claims to replace the usual one is generally only approximate analogues of Windows. The only exceptions are truly cross-platform products that are well-known in the Windows world , such as Opera or Firefox. But, for example, the GIMP graphic editor or office suite OpenOffice.org although they exist in Windows versions, they are little known due to the dominance of pirated Photoshop and MSOffice. At the same time, the system of menus and buttons in GIMP is not very similar to Photoshop, and OpenOffice by default saves files in formats that are not compatible with Word or Excel (and if you explicitly specify compatible ones, there may be all sorts of surprises. For example, you typed a table in OpenOffice writer and saved it in .doc. Then we continued typing the file in Word , but the table refused to go to the next page. Or you opened a word document with Excel diagrams in writer , and in it all the column fills flew and one picture fell on top of another).

And the most unpleasant thing is that not all devices have drivers. This applies to some printers, scanners, modems, etc. I tried to connect a Canon LBP800 printer to my wife's Linux machine at work. In the end, it works - but you can only print one page at a time, and not the entire document at once. Because the driver is incomplete. And unfinished - because it was written not by the manufacturer (which did not consider this case necessary), but by a certain Italian hacker - for which I thank him very much. Because if it wasn't for him, the printer wouldn't be usable at all.

- "Dad - who are you talking to"????
- Today I remembered jump.gif- that it seems that I gave the entire field photographic base for 4 years at the end of last year to an old ecologist friend...-For our last KMV-odsky winter, of course, something was also accumulated; - but these are trifles. "I'll call you and pick you up."
- I found all the word documents with addresses and data processing on a flash drive. jump.gif
- And here, - all!!! photographed and most importantly all!!!a certain collection of beetles and butterflies (labels I was just going to type, print and hope) - covered!!! - In addition to other feelings, - insanely ashamed in front of Fornax and the Hippopotamus Cat!!!
+ In addition to the loss of intellectual, moral, technical, material and temporary nature, - there is also an inconvenience in the fact that the collection of copies, the computer and the Internet are located in 3 different places... (imagine)
- And so, - the topic turned out to be hot lol.gif... - See, - even my favorite siailik appeared.
- Data on this computer is now stored on disk "D", which is blocked from"Unauthorized treatment".
"These are the pies. - Just watched Shmatrica.... - just "in the subject" rolleyes.gif

Listen, Andreas, I've been thinking, why don't you (and I, too, by the way) upload all your pictures (and videos, if any) to one of the photo sites. They are now like mushrooms, but for example, I like this one (in my opinion, the largest and most famous everywhere): http://www.flickr.com/
There you can switch to Russian and sign up. In which case, all the photos are there safely, you can see, and share with the forum. And on the technique of shooting with a specific camera or macro, you can consult there on the spot.
They also have departments for insects http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/insect/clusters/

delusion

In my opinion, Andreas simply did not come out of a state of stress. He throws it hard... I imagined that if I had a fire at work and the entire collection, documentation, other people's instances, types ("they are there") burned down, I would not be so thrown.

— yeah... "Especially when you consider, among other things, that I don't have any computer training." "And all this advice for the poor and hungry is a buzzword for me. - Not to mention (as it was clearly seen here) - even such venerable Users, Web designers and Programmers will never come to a common opinion on any issue in general and in particular.
- And if I don't think so , then my revelation that it is very, very difficult to work when the collection, computer and Internet are located in 3 different places is "Nonsense"!!!
-And you will have to rely on the help of fellow forum members for help in identifying collectible instances in any case. - Up to general alienation and disregard.
- I now first have to print out 35 pieces per page A-4 already defined restored views, and use the exclusion method to compare them visually with those in the boxes. Then make labels (this is already natural, normal and necessary). - And then I will turn to you again, dear older brothers in reason, for a second definition of the rest. "I can't just fold my paws and put an end to the whole life's work, which is my very essence and perception of the world!?
- Thank you all for your attention and advice. - But the infusion and self-feeling is completely decadent and shitty.

this is nonsense.

on disk "D", which is blocked from "Unauthorized treatment".

"It's ironic. -Although the subtleties of this issue certainly interest me.
- And today I was told that "after my flash drive, the whole system flew - and it was installed for 7 hours"...
- Don't mock me; "I'm tired of this nonsense myself.
