An old book about insects

Community and ForumLiterature and websitesAn old book about insects

Colleagues! mol.gif
The museum library has a book about insects (first floor. XIX century) in a late binding without a title and with partially mixed pages. On the spine in ink (reddish) is written the author: Dvigubsky and the title " Experience of natural history. Insects " BUT! In the series of books by I. A. Dvigubsky "Experience of the natural history of all animals of the Russian Empire" there is no book on insects and the drawings in other books in the series are very different from ours.
All searches for a match in the Internet-ended in vain... weep.gif
Maybe someone "in person" knows old books about insects in Russian and can help with its authorship...
I enclose photos of pages with texts and drawings and an inscription on the binding.

In the Russian Empire and insects such as in the first photo, never was.

It was immediately clear that the book was translated... By the way, Dvigubsky was mainly a popularizer, and not a "pure" scientist.
QUESTION-WHO is the author (of the book / translation)???

I wonder what is the practical meaning of this "simple" book at the present time??? Well I also understand the value of these books:

Dvigubsky I. A. Experience of cataloging representatives of the Moscow fauna. Second edition. Under the general editorship of P. P. Melgunov. With a portrait of I. A. Dvigubsky and a map of the Moscow province. M. Tipo-lithografiya t-va I. N. Kushnerev and Co. 1892g. 135s. Hard semi-leather binding. Marble cover of the lids., Enlarged format. Compiled on behalf of the Zoological Department of the Imperial Society of Natural History Lovers by L. K. Albrecht, S. A. Zernov, N. Y. Zograf, F. F. Kavraisky, A. N. Karchagin, N. M. Kulagin, P. P. Melgunov, K. A. Satunin, A. A. Tikhomirov and B. A. Fedchenko.

I. Dvigubsky Moscow flora, or description of wild plants in the Moscow Province 1828. The first Russian-language reference guide to the wild flora of the Moscow province, written by the famous Russian scientist-naturalist Ivan Alekseevich Dvigubsky (1771-1839). This work is considered one of the most significant in the history of studying the flora of the city of Moscow and the Moscow region. Its author is I. A. Dvigubsky, publisher of the popular magazine "New Store of Natural History, Physics, Chemistry and Economic Data". In 1802, he received the degree of Doctor of Medicine, defending his dissertation " The beginnings of the Moscow fauna "("Primitiae Faunae Mosquensis"). Since 1804, I. A. Dvigubsky was a professor at Moscow University, lectured and wrote scientific papers, which contributed to the spread of natural science knowledge in Russia. His works cover many areas of natural science. The scientist spent many years creating a herbarium of the flora of the Moscow region, but most of it died in a fire in 1812. In 1828, his work "Moscow Flora, or description of plants growing wild in the Moscow province" was published, in which 929 species were characterized, mainly wild or wild flowering plants. This work summed up the first period of studying the Moscow flora, mainly plants in the immediate vicinity of Moscow, now included in the city limits. In his work "Moscow Flora", the author used not only his own research and the results of field work, but also the materials of books by other scientists – G. Marcius and M. A. Maksimovich. The author of the first printed "Muscovite flora" - "Enumeratio stirpium agri Mosquensis", published in 1792, is F. A. Shishkin. Stefan, who headed the Moscow apothecary's garden and paid special attention to the plants of the nearest Moscow region. His work contains descriptions of 860 species. "Description of wild plants in the Moscow Province" by I. A. Dvigubsky is decorated with a folding engraved table with the image of the 21st plant species on a separate insert at the end of the book and an engraved title.

Oleg, the book apparently comes from the library of the Society for Research of the Yaroslavl province in the est. ist. relation and probably the inscription on the cover is made by the hand of A. S. Petrovsky, the founder of the Society.
There is no utilitarian "practical "meaning in it, but its value lies in its memorialization. And reliable attribution of the book is desirable, so that when placing it at exhibitions-do not screw yes.gifup

It's clear. This is then a question for second-hand booksellers and bibliophiles, because before there were a lot of specialized catalogs of literature-somewhere it will pop up. This information is provided to Ivan Alekseyevich Dvigubsky (1771-1839) I literally immediately found it in the search engine Alib.ru

Dmitry, why don't you tell us about your old entomological school and Yaroslavl entomologists ??? After all, we have such a page "About the heroes of bygone times" .

This is the fifth volume of Buffon Dvigubsky is related to the fifth volume:
Buffon for Youth, or An abridged history of the three kingdoms of Nature, / Written by Peter Blanchard, for young people of both sexes and for those who want to have an understanding of natural history,; With the appendix of many engraved paintings.; Translated from the French third edition, corrected and multiplied. - Moscow : In the printing house of Selivanovskago village, 1814. - 12° (20 cm).
Translated by S. A. Nemirov. It is indicated in Blanchard's "News of a newly published book, the works of his own G. Blanchard under the title: Buffon for Youth... Moscow, 1814" published in "Plutarch for Youth" (Moscow, 1814).
Censor: H. A. Schlezer, January 28, 1810 (vol. 1, 2); P. I. Strakhov (vol. 3) ;S. A. Nemirov or P. I. Strakhov (vol. 4); I. A. Dvigubsky (vol. 5) .

Your copy is probably an editorial one. This is indicated by edits in the text, mixed up pages, and the absence of a tit. sheet (they were printed last). Given that the binding is late, the name of the editor written on the blank publishing covers could have got on the spine, and the name was indicated by mistake-raz Dvigubsky, which means " Experience eats. stories". In the absence of a title and given that both editions belong to the same period, this is quite possible.

Yaroslavl Est. ist. society was founded in 1864, and the book was published in 1814 and for half a century somewhere "wandered" before getting into the library of the society. Rather, it was "well" used (hence the marks on the pages). As a result, the book "fell apart" and it was re-bound, losing some of the pages and the title...

Maybe so, but the name of the censor (editor) on the spine must have been taken from somewhere. Most likely from blank covers or paper wrappers. There is no mention of the editor's name in the book itself. At the same time, the title was no longer there, but rather did not exist initially. The title was printed at the end, because it (on the reverse side) indicated "Print allowed" date and name of the state censor. This has already been done after the scientific editorial board. Such is the reasoning...

The fifth volume of Blanchard is available on Google Books - this is NOT our copy. In the fifth volume - plants and minerals. The first volume, mammals, is also available on Google books...

In 1817, another guide by Blumenbach was published, but in three parts - insects in the second part. There was another edition to which Dvigubsky was related, but it was also a three-volume edition.
Millen, Aubin Louis (1759-1818).
Initial Foundations of Natural History / Published in the second edition, corrected and multiplied by Ivan Dvigubsky. - Moscow : In the University Printing House, 1820. - 12° (18 cm).
Part 2: Plants [Text]. - 96, 73 - 125, [1] S., [1] L. tabl. Ch. 3: Zhivotnyya [Text]. - 216, 28 p., 3 l. ill.

We also need a minimum of 5 volumes (this is indicated on the engravings).
Let's take a look at the engravings of Volume 4 by Blanchard

Isn't it compositionally very similar? At the top, in the right corner, the volume number and page, fonts...
now the engraving of volume 1:

and on this page of the Lipetsk library you will find an image of the title of the 5th volume

Here is an extract from the RGB catalog card:
Preface by the author on pages I-X vol. 1.
There are var. text type: var. 1 - on ob. tit. l. t. 1 cen. resolution with the date "January 28, 1810", var. 2 - without date; var. 3 - on ob. tit. l. t. 4 censor S. A. Nemirov, var. 4-P. I. Strakhov; var. 5-tit. l. t. 5 with the date of publication "1813" and a discrepancy in the text - " with the appendix of 57 engraved paintings. Translated from the French third edition, revised and expanded. Volume five. On plants and fossils", var. 6-as in the description.
The front. - allegheny ill.
incisors. грав. and etching.

As you can see, the fifth volume was in different versions. By the way, the fact that vertebrates in the first, and in the fifth insects is correct - then they followed this order of description. This also indirectly suggests that the fifth volume is probably the last.

I am still inclined to believe that this is Blanchard also because there was no longer a five-volume cheap edition to the fifth (precisely the fifth) volume of which Dvigubsky would have been related. The fact that the edition is cheap can be seen from the clumsy coloring of engravings - in expensive editions this was not
