Manduca Sexta - how keep in the house?

Community and ForumInsects breedingManduca Sexta - how keep in the house?

D. Day.
I got 4 caterpillars of tobacco hawk moth (bought as " alive. and weight feed"). But 2 of them died, apparently, going to pupate. Because they were acquired impulsively, it was a pity, there was no database. Now I'm typing, to my shame.

* Where can I read about keeping hawkmoth in captivity? Both caterpillars and adults?

* Do they need nightshades?
My refusal. from a green tomato (i.e. chili pepper, although it is mentioned in the composition). feed) - in favor of cucumber fruits! Maybe they're missing out on something?

* Why does a caterpillar purchased 2 weeks earlier than another one lag behind in growth? It feeds on natural cucumbers-tomatoes and has a holy green color, and the second one is grown on the farm. aft, very powerful and blue. Is this normal?

* What should be the "insectarium "(in particular, a terrarium for keeping) for the hawk moth?

* My tracks are kept in plastic containers (transparent). plast. "mayonnaise" vessels) on a napkin. Is this normal, or do they need soil?

* Where you can find more details. and available. information about hawk moth pupation?

* My goose actively crawled around the jar in the morning, then found it reduced in length by half (approx. 8 cm -> 4 cm) and wrinkled. It is absolutely not elastic, shapeless. Put it on the ground. The butterfly will be gone?

Thank you in love. in this case. In the photo, gus-tsy has 4 pairs of false teeth. legs, because one "pulled in".

"Natural food" in the form of tomatoes and cucumbers is not at all natural for hawk moth caterpillars, they need leaves and stems. From that, probably, and lag behind. In addition, purchased vegetables may contain pesticides. And what kind of artificial food, complete with caterpillars went? I've heard that they feed you some kind of agarised mixture based on wheat germ and a bunch of other ingredients, but I think it will be much easier to pick potato tops at this time of year than to prepare such a miracle of food technology.

The same problem, bought in a pet store immediately with this mixture. There is enough food for a long time, but the caterpillars still die like flies (maybe a little humidity, diseases?). It seems to me that it is not safe to transfer them to real food, because they have been kept on this food for generations. I have long been disappointed in them, because they are also expensive here.

Interesting research was conducted by scientists of the Max Planck Institute on the symbiosis of the tobacco plant and Manduca Sexta. What attract Moths of Tobacco Hawk Moth and what kill the caterpillars. Fresh article here:

There's also a photo of our tracks.
Purchased caterpillars do not die from a lack of food in the store, most likely from the fact that you did not clean them for them in time. This should be done daily.

You would have corrected some of the text using an online translator.:
Still hungry larvae hatching from eggs, these butterflies lay on the leaves. Plant blooms depend on pollen spreaders in order to reproduce. Also the tobacco plant suffers from if pollinators,

Read this and you won't fall asleep later. And the advice on cleaning up waste products is, of course, correct. smile.gif

I bought caterpillars of 2-3 pieces of penultimate age, without feed, and grew them on tomatoes or sweet peppers, and not in cans, but directly on potted plants. The caterpillars felt quite well, grew quickly, a couple of them somehow destroyed 16 sweet pepper plants for 3-4 days. Butterflies turned out to be standard size, bright color. So there were no problems with feeding.
