In the Baltic forest, in a place far enough from the water, I found a strange insect on a mushroom (chanterelle). I was surprised by the claws like a scorpion or cancer. Tell me what kind of "beast" is this ?

Vlad, this is a false scorpion, a member of the eponymous order of arachnids. A completely harmless creature.

Hello, please help me determine who they are:

4 cm long, mustache not less than 7 cm.

A friend of mine picked them up on Pushkin Square 2 days ago. They were freezing in the parking lot. They took pity on them and took them home.
Now there was a dispute as to whether they were ordinary cockroaches, just large ones; tropical cockroaches or crickets. And whether they are kept in the apartment as pets, and if so, where can I find people who need them in this capacity? smile.gif Maybe someone knows?
A friend would keep it for himself, but his family is against "big cockroaches". smile.gif

15.10.2006 2:24, Kristy

Come on! These are the most wonderful creatures!
Don't rush to get rid of them. They have a lot of advantages! With their help, you can keep your neighbors on their toes. You just need to show them to your neighbors and hint that if they start drilling walls at a later time or playing the piano on weekends, then your little friends will go for a walk through the ventilation shaft directly to their apartments.
Secondly, you can collect them in a box and, when there is not enough seating for you on public transport, open the box and innocently pour them on the lap of the more successful passenger who took your seat. After that, you will always be given a seat... if, of course, you survive.
Third, they have a great nutritional value. They can be baked in pancakes, fried, steamed. They are especially good lightly fried in olive oil.
Their paws make excellent toothpicks.
And when they have children, which will happen very soon and one day you forget to close the box, how much joy and emotion they will give you, climbing their tiny paws on your trousers and begging for bread crumbs during lunch.
Yes, you never know what else!
Only they, in addition to chips that are poured into the lid of a mayonnaise jar, also need water; -)

15.10.2006 2:53, st2

Kristy, thank you! smile.gif We didn't think about the water.
So this is a common cockroach?
I remember. that there were people who were very fond of tropical cockroaches and kept them at home... I just can't find them right now.
And a friend - he is a fan of saving animals (birds, insects). He's quite serious about putting them in good hands.

15.10.2006 3:08, Shofffer

Hello, please help me determine who they are:

These are tropical cockroaches from the genus Periplaneta. Apparently, they have already gone wild in Moscow... smile.gif

15.10.2006 5:06, Bad Den

2 st2:
As Shoffer said, these are cockroaches from the Periplanetta river, most likely Periplanetta americana. In addition to all other interesting things, they still run very fast (the famous "cockroach races" are held with the participation of these cockroaches), you can open the sweepstakes wink.gif.
In general, this is an analog of our red cockroach, only originally from the States - so we haven't decided yet what to do with them, just in case, close the box more tightly wink.gif

I decided, I don't know why, to see if there were any animals living in flower pots. He poked at the ground with a match. And I could barely make out microscopic light dashes running around (there were definitely 5 of them in the pot), less than a millimeter in length, probably. And immediately discovered an amazing thing: running this creature runs, then how to jump (or maybe fly, it's hard to say) about 1-1. 5 cm from the initial position and then runs. I took it and threw it with the earth out of the pot on the windowsill, it began to rush madly jumping all the time.
I couldn't make out its structure at all, who could it be, do you know?

(P.S. I also found a worm, a length of cm., a thickness of less than mm., white in color, some kind of invalid (the back of his body did not seem to work), he swam in a puddle, turning his head in a spiral)

18.10.2006 18:40, Chromocenter

These were Colemballs-insects if you look closely at unusual ones-they look like "aliens", primary wingless, hidden-jawed, there are no complex eyes, if I'm not mistaken, there are only clusters of simple ones, they jump with the help of a tail "fork". Live in the soil and one of the most numerous of their inhabitants. Described, in my opinion, about 7000 species. I've seen them before, too.
I don't know what kind of "worm" chot is.

Male arboreal (Hierodula). The view you have is probably transcaucasica.

19.10.2006 19:37, sealor

Bolivar, thank you! The species is exactly transcaucasica, based on data source this determinant. They gave me a female amelysa, but she died without putting off her ooteka. I identified it by the above key as Ameles heldreichi , but I didn't find the oratorio this year.

Bolivar, thank you!
You're welcome beer.gif

22.10.2006 14:42, guest: Борис Лейкин

The first pot contained what looked like cubs. I looked in another pot, there are a whole bunch of them, healthy up to 2 mm. with a mustache and jump 4 cm.
Similar to these http://www.stevehopkin.co.uk/collembolamap...orpha/261FOcan/

22.10.2006 17:22, Tigran Oganesov

Well, yes, there are collemballs.

23.10.2006 11:16, Mylabris

A worm can be a large nematode. I once also got a microscope and looked at everything possible, including water at the bottom of a saucer after watering domestic plants, and water from a vase with flowers. So there is such a wealth of them!

During the nighttime filming of butterflies, caddis flies (Trichoptera) often flew in. During the filming, I received photos of 9 or 10 different families, genera, and species, but I clearly don't have enough knowledge to determine them (I'm not a biologist). Please assist in the identification process.
The photo was taken on the territory of the Moscow region in June 2006.

I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure that

01_003_DSC00048.jpg - not a caddis fly, but a butterfly of the small-wing family (Micropterygidae, genus Micropteryx) or a similar family - if you look closely at the wings, you can see the scales covering them

01_009_DSC04029.jpg " it's really hematopoietic, you can tell by the venation of the wings. Hairs on the surface of the wings (macrotrichia and microtrichia) are present in very many insects, microtrichia are inherent in even the most primitive (mayflies, for example)

The rest are indeed caddis flies, but it is doubtful to determine them from the photo, of course. As far as I know, at the level of the genus and sometimes even the family, the definition is almost exclusively based on male genitalia...
