A couple of fairly large bees(?) it has been twisting around the same plant for two weeks, driving away other insects. The insect is timid and reacts quite aggressively when the lens approaches more than seven to ten centimeters, so there are practically no photos from a different angle/in better quality, alas. At least about what kind of animals.

Possibly Anthidium sp. (Megachilidae)

11.08.2015 13:48, MPN

Males (and in the picture it is the male) of Cerceris are difficult to determine from the pictures. They "work" signs of pubescence of the antennae, the last sternites of the abdomen, less often the platypus.
In my opinion, this specimen looks more like Cerceris arenaria in terms of the color of its antennae and legs.

Thank you for your reply.

What is the difference between Formica imitans and F. cinerea?
Does the imitator have a redder breast? and if a dark individual is caught, is it possible to distinguish them at all?

So they differ in color. The status of these two taxa is still controversial. It is not customary to determine ants by one individual, especially working ones. They are determined by the series, fortunately, there are usually no problems with this.

is there anything else besides color?

I haven't seen it. Seifert put them together because he couldn't find anything. And he's a good seeker.

If it's not a secret, do you have an applied or purely theoretical interest?

According to Seifert, they are no different. This is one species of F. cinerea. Dlussky singled out the two-colored ones as a separate species Formica imitans. But his point of view didn't win out. Radchenko supports Seifert's opinion. Photos of the two-tone and gray ones are here:
http://www.antvid.org/Gal1/Formicinae/Formica%20cinerea.html
I've personally only seen grays and only two-tone ones. I didn't see any color-shifting forms. Radchenko wrote that there are also transitional forms in Ukraine.

Try running it for this job:

Just keep in mind that those mites that have a 12-segmented tendril are now called temnothorax. Although in old works they are listed as leptothorax.
