Here on Alibi they sell a very good and rare book:
Tykach Ya. A small atlas of butterflies. ... 1959 ...Price 1100 rubles
.==================================
This is a pleasant book, but alas, it was important for us only in the Soviet period. Now it is hopelessly outdated in terms of completeness (or rather, the huge incompleteness of families), taxonomy and all other information; ecology, by the way, is Czech, and only rarely meets our conditions . The bad thing is that the Russian names of species there are often incorrectly translated, because the translator is not an expert on raznousym-and sometimes used in our literature.
==========
...., mostly life-size. The introductory article contains basic information on techniques for collecting and dissecting butterflies, caterpillars, and pupae. Each table has a detailed description. Indexes of Russian and Latin names.
=================================
Alas, often-not in full size. About collecting and dissecting - no better than Plavilshchikov's (an old book of the 30s) and even more so in new editions. And what is in the legends of tables and pointers - no longer has any scientific value.
CONCLUSION: For this 1100 rubles.??? - when new and better books are sometimes much cheaper! Except for collectors of old books with free money.

I'm also somewhat surprised. I didn't know.

Bau is better known for his "Determinant of the Beetles of Central Europe" (1914), translated under ed. Kholodkovsky (I have) based (compiled) on good sources of that time of course (Ganglbauer, for example). More than 2,500 species. ok 500 pages.

I don't understand, is there a book or an electronic version? Sample pages/tables??

By the way on Alibe.ru many different books by P. I. Marikovsky are inexpensive and very informative for entomologists and nature lovers in general!

I have collected almost all of his books for my library, and I often reread them...
Bright memory to the real entomologist Pavel Iustinovich!!!

Has anything been published in Russian about Nabokov's research on butterflies???

Nabokov's Golubyanki ''Kurt Johnson and Steve Coates

This book says about Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov with sincere chagrin (I quote): how much he might have done if he hadn't given up lepidopteria for literature instead of the other way around......

Thecla verae Nab.It's like someone expressing regret about what a good actor Shakespeare might have been if he hadn't been distracted by writing all sorts of tragedies and comedies. The book is called "Nabokov's Pigeons", its authors are entomologist Kurt Johnson and journalist Steve Coates. In fact, Nabokov spent his entire life torn between two vocations. The first essay that appeared in English under his signature was an article called "A Few Remarks on the Butterflies of the Crimea," and for the rest of his life he tried to spend every summer in the mountains, doing what he dubbed lepping in English; in Russian, one might say, in Khlebnikovsky fashion, "babochkuya, spent the summer months." He spent six years as a professional lepidopterist at the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology. Later, he called these years "the most joyful and exciting in my entire adult life." His passion at that time was taxonomy, which is considered the most boring and unromantic of all sciences. But this is the only way to sort out all the diversity of life in nature. As for Nabokov, he was engaged in dissecting insects, establishing differences between them in the smallest physical features in order to accurately establish their place in the general classification. This activity was so exciting for Nabokov that, as his wife Vera recalled, she once had to sternly remind her husband that he had other obligations, and with an exasperated "oh, yes" he pulled out the manuscript of an unfinished novel from under a pile of articles about butterflies.

As a lepidopterist, Nabokov was a specialist in small, beautifully colored butterflies called golubyanki. It was he who first correctly classified Karner's pigeon, a butterfly often mentioned in the American press recently, as its existence is threatened by deforestation in the north-west of America. In Pnin, Nabokov writes that these butterflies fluttered over the sand hill like blue snowflakes. In 1945, based on his observations, Nabokov proposed a completely new classification of pigeons. Curt Johnson, one of the authors of the book, is also, as you might expect, a specialist in pigeon-eating. It seems that he learned from his Russian predecessor unexpected and vivid comparisons. He writes, for example, that when dissecting butterflies that entomologists assigned to the same group, he found that their genitals looked as different as "Cadillacs, Volkswagen cars, and all-terrain vehicles on the site of the same car dealership." Johnson wanted to publish his discovery, but after going through all the literature on the subject, he found out that Nabokov had described it back in 1945.

Nabokov's Pigeonholes contains many charming stories about lepidopterist oddities who, guided by Nabokov's taxonomy, hunted unknown pigeonholes all over the world. For example, an entire Israeli family consisting of a father, mother, three children and a mother-in-law. Loaded into a Jeep, they drove off-road in the mountains of Bolivia and eventually added 60 more pigeon species to the original 19 described by Nabokov. They named one of the newly discovered butterflies Lolita, and another Humbert, but just in case, Humbert called the one that lives at a distance of 1500 kilometers from Lolita's place of residence. This monomaniacality is a common trait of butterfly hunters. Nabokov himself stuck a cartoon cut out of the comic magazine Punch over his desk at Harvard. It showed a man with a butterfly net. As he made his way through the jungle, he came across a clearing where brontosaurs were grazing. The caption read: "Very curious. However, we should not forget that I am an expert on butterflies."

At the end of their book, Johnson and Coates conclude that for all the scrupulousness and seemingly narrow interests of Nabokov as a scientist, the main thing for him and for his followers, both in literature and in science, was not his discoveries in the world of pretty pigeons, but an example of how a person can be a real person. it can develop an extremely focused and extremely broad view of the world at the same time.

Has anything been published in Russian about Nabokov's research on butterflies???
I didn't see it. Here is a good site, where there are also pieces of the book by Johnson and Coates (in English): http://www.libraries.psu.edu/nabokov/foriles.htm

If anyone has the book in electronic form: I would be grateful. smile.gif

It was he who first correctly classified Karner's pigeon, a butterfly often mentioned in the American press recently, as its existence is threatened by deforestation in the north-west of America.
In the northeast, actually. And what does it have to do with forests at all, if the butterfly lives on sand dunes and wastelands overgrown with Lupinus (personally observed...wink.gif)?

In general, journalists are in their repertoire. smile.gif Although this is still far from the worst option.

Artistic - it seems not, but the research of Nabokov may have been mentioned by Yu. P. Nekrutenko in "Butterflies of the Crimea".
