Gentlemen, Comrades! This is not how you do it.

picture: IMG_4020.jpg

Do not think in truth that this is a recipe from Igor Semyonovich. All the credit goes to the journalist.

P.S. A note from a local newspaper in the 70s. In those days when Primorye was tightly closed, Maak was a real exotic.

You need to remove mold from the beetles.
I heard it is necessary to wipe with vinegar, how much percentage should it be?

I wipe the mold with 70% alcohol (moistening a small piece of paper napkin with it), and then then gently scrape with a pin 00 with a slightly curved tip. It is better, of course, under the binocular, because, as a rule, you have to pry each GIF (or several stuck together) separately. It helps both beetles, butterflies, and eardrums, which is natural if the case is not too neglected, when the specimen is already beginning to crumble.

I tried sphagnum instead of sand - very satisfied! For some reason, my butterflies always get wet very slowly, and large ones have time to get moldy even before they get wet enough.
And with sphagnum - no mold, even if soaked for 3-4 days.

You just "don't know how to cook them" wink.gifmold on the butterflies/beetles themselves... there's no point in fighting it! we must accept that it EXISTS!!! mold is brushed away with a brush - hooray!
the most problematic grandmas are charaxes and the like (obstacles and other tropical heresy) + troidos.
in the evening, I throw in a lozenge, I sleepwink.gif, I come for lunch-I mumble my chest-I prick water, I come home from work (3-4 hours after the injection) - I spread out!
the entire process takes less than 24 hours. food container, foam rubber, water, a drop of "fairy"
ps do not think that the butterfly is not soaked! break her chest and drive as you want!
pps in the order of delirium! recently I got myself an achatina (snail) - coconut substrate (not shavings!) 100-150r in any zooiage and it does not mold wink.gifcan anyone poyuzaet?

Coconut substrate is not moldy (if high-quality) but everything of animal and vegetable origin, lying on it, becomes moldy with a bang. Then the stuck crumb will have to be removed from the insects somehow. In general, I don't like it. Sphagnum seems to be much more promising, it's a pity that it doesn't grow at all here.

Sometimes I don't clean food from Snotlout (my snail) for several days-boiled meat, fruits/vegetables. humidity above 95%, temperature 25-27. I haven't seen mold in six months. I don't know what you have where moldy, just for everything you need care.
I think this substrate is perfect for pupae wink.gif
I used to wet it in the sand, boil it "until white", then decided to cook it, pour vinegar essence-one dick mold weep.gifespecially Primorye and some tropics, although the Caucasus failed more than once. BUT! the sand then needs to be fried /steamed, and the foam can is simply washed and on the road beer.gif
see post #422 on this page, current I do not pour vinegar, but add "fairy" and I do not steal wink.gifthe pan because there is a container

I ate a dog on gileina terrariums in general and coconut substrate in particular (of course, in a figurative sense), so I know what I'm writing about. And in snails in general, mold rarely grows, either the mucus prevents it, or the mollusks themselves devour the mycelium before it becomes visible to the human eye.

I soften as follows. A plastic container somewhere 30 by 20 cm deep 7 cm, at the bottom of a piece of foam or even a rag on which I put the film. I pour a little water and 2-3 ml of ammonia. I lay out the butterflies and after 4 hours or if in the evening in the morning I pull them out for straightening. Then in the breast of each copy I prick ammonia, and after waiting 3-5 minutes I spread it out. Always no problems.!

26.11.2016 1:50, ИНО

And what is the meaning of ammonia (ammonia is still another substance)? As far as I know, he, on the contrary, tans squirrels, and pricks it for zamora.

26.11.2016 2:59, Zunimassa

Better tell me how to properly dry large beetles. for example, when they are soaked and packed for transportation.
Putting it in an apartment in the open air is not an option, because it is always some kind of rubbish like moths flying or dust settles.
Now I threw it in a sheet, collected and tied the ends, made something like a cocoon and hung it over the battery, but this is somehow not right.

26.11.2016 3:09, ИНО

Just in the middle of the room. The moth must be found and destroyed, then it will fly into the box. But she usually ignores insects drying in the open. But the stink has a place to be. And you should not dry it in the fresh air: even through a nylon stocking, fly larvae seep out. Although, in principle, you can try to tighten the container with a thick paper napkin fixed with an elastic band instead of a stocking: I successfully saved the brew from drosophila in this way, but I didn't check the necrophages.

friends keep in the oven (even parnassus), I don't know the temperature and exposure, because I don't do "elephants" wink.gifin the topic about straightening there was an option, it seems from Knyazev, with a fan heater shuffle.giffor straightening a good option, but a little energy-consuming, and you need to keep it long enough, otherwise it will "lead" later. I think that the heating batteries will perfectly cope with the task in a few days/weeks. at first, it smells a little, and then you need to keep it so that all the "rot" dries up so much that it doesn't even occur to her to appear wink.gifat the same time 1 edge of the packaging film is not fixed!

26.11.2016 9:24, AGG

if there are problems with moths, then there are a lot of pheromone traps, the main thing is "do not overdo it" and then I watched as a bunch of "moths" broke my mosquito from the street side wink.gif

I conducted a very interesting experiment today. To speed up the softening of butterflies, in addition to keeping them in a desiccator for a day, I prick a 10% ammonia solution into the breast, so today I decided to try injecting it into a dry butterfly (hawk moth). As a result, the wings gained mobility and spread out effortlessly. True, I did this already with a straightened copy, which simply "sagged" the wings, but the method deserves to be. Because in an alternative case, it would have to be completely softened again.

23.08.2017 13:35, KONI

Alexander, it is much easier to make an injection with very hot water and put the butterfly on a napkin for 10-15 minutes. You can see the result for yourself.

Warm Konstantin, warm..Too hot can lead to stiffening and hardening of fabrics that can still be softened. Then it will be very difficult to do. What is 10% ammonia by the way ???..The pharmacy sells 5%..And chistogan is 24% ammonia water. It doesn't happen anymore !

07.09.2017 1:09, KONI

Dry ones are better served with hot water, not warm water. Tissue hardening does not occur and cannot occur from this. Now, if the insect was initially starved by something that led to fettering, then only ethyl acetate will help.
In the pharmacy I saw both 5% and 10% ammonia under the same name "Ammonia".

07.09.2017 17:42, СаняМухолов

This is the 10% ammonia I use.

Camping container to prevent butterflies from drying out. When traveling for 2-3 days, the most important thing is that I have time to straighten everyone out. I prefer to straighten immediately, I don't like to soften dry ones.

A thick viscose cloth is pressed to the bottom with a perforated tape, which is abundantly saturated with water. Butterflies can be pinned on orange sheets of styrofoam on both sides. And also on the white izolon lining. The container is rather big, the surface is large, the catch will fit in 2-3 days.

In general, what would invent such a thing, it is necessary sooo not to like to collect on cotton wool/in envelopes and soak))

Here is a container with straighteners I take on a plane for domestic flights. I haven't tried it in international markets yet.

Straighteners are placed on plastic corners and fixed with screws through holes in the wall. The corners are quickly removed - unscrew two nuts with your fingers.
An iron pin is placed on top of the bag so that the lid in the luggage does not crumple and does not damage the butterflies on the upper straightener.

I want to share my experience in repelling unpleasant odors from beetles that have lain in soil traps for a month or more along with dead mice, frogs and lizards.
I came across this option quite by accident last season. Material was exported from Abkhazia. Packed in plastic bottles from under the Belarusian yogurt. Wide-necked bottles. Filled with a solution of 10% vinegar, but there is still free space in the bottle. Fearing to shake up the beetles, I added herbs to the bottles, the tips of branches of needles, inflorescences of herbs, etc.
Arriving home, I began to lay out the material on mattresses and then a pleasant surprise. All unpleasant odors were neutralized and only the smell of pickled herbs remained. Much nicer than rotten decomposed mice. So if this option is useful to anyone, I will be only too happy. By the way, it was not necessary to shake out the material through the neck along with the grass. You cut off the neck of the bottle, carefully pull out the grass and then also carefully pour the marinade with beetles into the washing container.

Expensive time of day! Yes, in this topic there is a lot about soaking different insects, but no one writes anything about soaking ornithopters, because when water gets on the wings, the scales stick together, both on black and on green, blue, golden
tones, well, even a light steam changes the color of the wings. I bought Rodschild's ornithopter, Priamus Poseidon and Croesus, gave everyone a shot of water, put it in bags to completely avoid getting steam, but Croesus still got water through his chest and got on the wing a spot formed and the butterfly lost its appearance, it's very offensive, for me the butterfly is not cheap. Maybe I did something wrong, I soaked the troides before, Brukian didn't see anything like this, even droplets of condensation hung on the edges of the wings, everything dried up and the butterflies became perfect. I looked at a lot of photos on the Internet, none of them have such a problem. Can someone tell me something? Soon they will bring more ornithopters, I would not like to spoil them either. The spot in the photo is clearly visible. And it's not fat

For all the time of my experiments in terms of loosening, I stopped only on one thing. This is wet, but not wet sand.
No problem at all!

In this place, I constantly got dirty until I started laying my mustache with a napkin. I don't remember any more, but most likely I washed it with vodka from a syringe. Slow and drop by drop approach in four.

Everything I have is in the desiccator on DRY napkins in alcohol and water vapor. At least half a year there will be zero mold butterflies, and they will be soaked almost to their original state.

Hello!
Has anyone ever made a collection of ants here? I would really like to know the specifics of soaking them (methods, how long it takes, etc.).
Thank you in advance.

Hello! When soaking in a desiccator (only cold water), after a day one spot of the gold leaf darkened, will the white color return back? It feels like the elytra is soaked with water from the inside.

Throw in 70% alcohol, the next day will be soaked. But it is better not to pay attention.
