How to save traps from people

Community and ForumEntomological collectionsHow to save traps from people

rpanin, 17.05.2007 17:32

The topic isn't funny at all. Especially when you arrive 300 km away, and 90 % of the traps are "bombed" . Despite the fact that they would not be camouflaged. (Then you barely find them yourself) Not only are the lids knocked down ,but the contents are also pulled out and poured out.(what if there's goldlol.gif?) Naturally, the entomaterial disappears. It's a shame, damn it! How to escape from the ubiquitous retired mushroom pickers? confused.gif
This season, I wrote all sorts of threatening information on the covers with a CD marker: "Acid!", "poison", "high voltage" Let's see how effective it will be.
Well, I would like to share my thoughts with my entomology colleagues -who is fighting these misfortunes and how?

This is a very relevant topic. In the steppe, traps are also taken out... rooks. But this is before the beginning of intensive vegetation. I didn't come up with anything clever - if you hide them and disguise them, you won't find them later. It is clear that transparent cups are more resilient and you need to choose places that are not visited by people.

IMHO the surest way - sketch a number of wires! Stick it in the ground to make it dumb, if anyone wants to pick it up!

Are you laughing?
But I've heard about this method of masking from rooks: pulling a rope over an object that needs to be protected.

17.05.2007 18:26, Aleksey Adamov

In general, of course, this is the most painful topic.
When rooks pull out-it's a shame.
When people disfigure cups - I speak two languages, Russian and Russian obscene. If I saw the culprit in the process... mad.gif , a photo of what was left of it would definitely be posted on the forum.

and if you write a text that there is nothing valuable/edible there, this is for the study of so - and-so, please do not take it away, and in a transparent plastic bag (so that it does not get wet, but it is readable), and attach it next to the ground??? - - - - or am I too naive ????

17.05.2007 18:44, omar

For example, N. B. Nikitsky writes the banal "Please do not touch! An experiment is underway!". It doesn't always help, but it works more often. smile.gif

I think that the glasses should be transparent so that the rooks do not indulge. wink.gif

Last summer we buried about 30 glasses in the Crimea and someone tore them all out. 5 pieces were never found. Finally it's a shame! weep.gif

It would work with the Europeans or the Americans, but not with us. Our people, first of all, will make sure that "there is nothing valuable/edible there, this is for the study of so-and-so." They will definitely check if you missed anything in this message.

In my opinion, "T. T. P. P." will work better (Just Touch P... You will Get It) shuffle.gif

By the way, transparent cups and glass jars, rooks pull much less often.
But glass jars are taken away by "people".

Rooks, wild boars-it's a shame, but not to tears. And here are the people... mad.gif
I believe that there is nothing to count on consciousness. Even more interesting to look at what is there will cause such an inscription. Here you need to invent something frighteningly warning.
But the wire next to it is an idea!!!Plus the inscription "HIGH VOLTAGE-ACID".I don't think you'll even want to touch it with your feet, let alone with your paks.

In the Volgograd region, cups were regularly carried by local foxes. And they didn't just pull them out of the ground and rummage through them, but dragged them away with the ends! It's a shame, but you can't escape it. I agree that it's even more insulting when these cups are pulled by people. Stupid, idle curiosity of individual individuals of the human race leads to an empty waste of sometimes great efforts. I think that there is no universal remedy for this. Signs like "do not climb, otherwise you are a corpse" will not only not save you, but will also cause even more interest and excitement of these representatives. The threat of "electric shock" can be easily overcome with a stick. Traps, IMHO, should be dug in places invisible from the trails and masked with stones, branches, etc., depending on the biotope.

17.05.2007 23:48, Proctos

It is not possible to protect soil traps. Only by putting them in inaccessible places, in a certain order. Bet a lot, but something will survive.
It is better not in one place, but in several.
The easiest way is to put them in nature reserves and national parks. Where there are few people.
In a city park, of course, you don't need to.

18.05.2007 7:16, Mylabris

In my experience, not so much "dumb-headed bipeds" as dumb-headed quadrupeds were more common. Disguise-disguise, and then a herd of cows or a herd of horses will pass - and whisker...

In the Caucasus, during my practice, the destruction of traps on a large scale occurred 2 times. the first time a mudslide was demolished, the second-Alpine jackdaws were stolen. if you put it out in the woods and no one saw you in the process , then everything is OK. On the alpika, this is worse, because there is almost always a koshara-flock-shepherd. I decide simply - I ALWAYS get acquainted with the aborigines and explain what I do and why. Here on the plain, alas, this often does not help.
And about the wires: do you seriously suggest throwing non-ferrous metal around the line and expect everyone to run away?! Well, well. People cut power lines by kilometers...

Yeah, and then there are often foxes with white muzzles lol.gif

You can also put barbed wire collars around traps lol.gif

At one time (this is not related to traps, it's a completely different story) in one laboratory, as an anti-smoking measure, the inscription was applied to the instruments: "lab. especially dangerous infections. Don't take it out of the lab!" They say it helped...

Entalex.
It is clear that it is necessary to mask traps . In the forest, you can still do something, but in the field...

Believe me, I've tried everything. but there is no escape from the ubiquitous "people".
And so with a threatening text, I think the percentage of damage can be reduced. Or, so that the cups are not pulled out of the ground. To hell with it with a broken lid , but the material will be more or less safe if you write that there is acid...
Well, let's look at the results at the end of the season.

What I agree with - so it is necessary to put more episodes. And labels and wires are inefficient and unrealistic for large volumes.

Dear rpanin, I think that the percentage of broken traps is proportional to the number of people present in the area (not counting curious animals). And, most likely, this should be taken philosophically. So, probably, we should set more traps, adjusted for this loss. Warning instructions (current, acid, bomb, infection, etc.) can lead to such a possible result - some law-abiding citizen will not touch the trap, but simply call the Ministry of Emergency Situations or the police. Imagine, you come with the mood to evaluate the catch, and there is an ambush frown.gifYou put your muzzle in the ground, and then you are in the "monkey house" for a long and tedious excuse. wink.gif

The fact that there is a direct connection with the "population" (popularity) of the area is for sure. I tried to put cups in the parks of Rostov-on-Don-100% failure and only on the very edge of the city there were traps (there was very high grass).
How can increasing the number of traps help? The calculation that the "yankee" steamed up to pull the cups?

Well, of course, if you dig 100 glasses exactly along the path, the result is predictable! I meant that a certain area should be covered with traps. Or do you think that curious people will crawl on snags for half a day in search of the next glasses? wink.gif

18.05.2007 21:04, Mylabris

Here for such gatherers to put traps-300 liter containers with acetic acid and evaluate the catch in a week!!!
I immediately remembered an anecdote on the subject:
Does your husband work at a brewery?
- Yes, it works.
"You know, he fell into a beer barrel and drowned..."
"How?"! Just like that, he just took it and drowned?!!
- Well, not really, he climbed out a couple more times to take a piss..
So, so as not to climb smile.gifout

In general, I have a problem with pulling out, but what can I do?. I try to put myself in such places where people don't go, so they don't pull out so much (and I don't put so much) shuffle.gif

19.05.2007 14:32, Dinusik

Yes, traps can do all sorts of things. I also had mushroom pickers pulled out of the ground, and then thrown out nearby, and the cattle trampled. But the worst thing was last year, when four times the traps burned down along with the coniferous forest. Moreover, the traps are a pity less than the forest itself. I no longer know how to explain to summer residents that last year's grass should be removed and not burned... Now you drive past burnt Christmas trees, your heart bleeds.
Traps, of course, are best placed in places that are little visited and not attractive to tourists. I don't know, though, if I'll be able to catch anything in the coastal biotopes this season. It is difficult to find a reservoir here that is not a place of rest, especially in the middle of summer, when the temperature exceeds +30. I'll have to disguise it better.

19.05.2007 18:58, RippeR

In such areas, you should put signs - the lake is contaminated with toxic chemicals. Although in our time and this does not help frown.gif

I read it and got a question: what was it that was poured into the traps that foxes dragged them? Beer? I have, for example, such a retainer that God forbid any animal to put a sensitive nose there... I suspect that quadrupeds are still attracted to rodents and other food that has fallen into the glasses. But with these "friends" it is really difficult to cope. No grilles, no funnels do not help, if the system works, then against insects too...
As for the two-legged "orderlies of the forest": I managed to catch them productively even on city lawns: I chose more terrible vegetation (nettle. thistle, rosehip) and put cans. Masked in prominent places: two stones and a piece of slate on top, the beetles only get bigger.
Yes, that there are cups, sometimes you have to leave the traps of Malaise and pah-pah...

There was beer in the traps. About whether foxes drink beer or not, the question is not for me! smile.gif

Hard to reach for humans - hard to reach for beetles!
By this I mean that sometimes the most promising places are located in places with a large rotation of "people".

That's right!

24.05.2007 15:34, guest: Brandashmyg

My experience with traps is very limited. A little caught in the Flax. area, places quite busy, okr. Ropshi (where Peter III was still crushed) - a neglected park and even more neglected agricultural land. I always carefully masked the traps and there were no problems! I had to make a plan of "trap fields", like: "from the tree in azimuth... up to the big stone, with an interval of... " However, a couple of times, I couldn't find a couple of traps myself frown.gif. And you, what - traps in the open put? Or do the aborigines have nothing to do/want beer to such an extent that they search all the bushes on all fours/sniff for beer?

24.05.2007 16:07, Dinusik

Traps, of course, are masked, but mushroom pickers still find them. Again, citizens without a specific place of residence in search of bottles, cans, and so on. sometimes they can come across traps (I already wrote about how a homeless person drank beer from my trap). Cows don't care at all, but they can be trampled by traps.

24.05.2007 16:10, rpanin

And you, what - traps in the open put? Or do the aborigines have nothing to do/want beer to such an extent that they search all the bushes on all fours/sniff for beer?

It all depends on the biotope. In the forest, you can't hide anything from the sharp eyes of mushroom pickers (the mushroom picker himself). Starting from the middle of summer, our forests are being combed completely. Unless somewhere in the Carpathian Mountains in the middle of nowhere, you can safely set traps.
In the small preserved steppe areas, the trap is like a dolon. Especially in the spring ,when the rare low-growing xerothermic grass is just beginning to break through. Try to hide a trap here! Omnipresent children, shepherds alike will see .
In the mountains of the Carpathians, in the alpine zone, the same difficulties . There are always a lot of tourists near the peaks. Here even stone camouflage does not help.
