Nationalnycklen till Sveriges Flora och Fauna

The National Encyclopedia to Swedens Flora and Fauna

________________________________________________________________

This series is the most ambitious natural history book project ever launched and will treat all known species of animals and plants from Sweden. Until further the volumes will also treat species from Finland, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. At the moment somewhat less than 60,000 species of organisms are known, from which more than half are insects. The series is planned to be published in about 120 volumes over the coming 20-25 years. Each volume is authored by leading experts, and the series is published with heavy subsidies from the Swedish parliament over the whole publishing period. This is the reason why the volumes can be sold at very moderate prices.

The 50,000 species which can be identified without highly advanced equipment will be described in detail, including information on distribution and biology. For most of them, distribution maps as well as illustrations e.g. watercolours will also be provided. The groups containing the remaining 10,000 species will be presented down to a suitable taxonomic level (e.g. families), with the species presented as checklists. The text is in Swedish, but for each species, key facts (summary) will be given in English. The many high quality illustrations, distribution maps and illustrated identification keys in both Swedish and English makes the series valuable for an international audience. For many insect groups, hardly any European identification literature is available, and therefore this Encyclopedia should especially be most important for anyone with an interest in European insects.

A great number of authors are needed to complete The Encyclopedia of Swedens Flora and Fauna. Texts will written by senior scientists and other species experts. Several species groups will often be included in one volume. If an author is not a professional taxonomist, he or she will co-operate with either domestic or international taxonomic experts.

Apollo Books are proud to be appointed as sole distributor outside Sweden for this unique book series. Each volume can of course be purchased separately as well as we can offer various subscriptions: For subscriptions to the whole series 15% discount off the ordinary prices. Further we offer subscriptions with 10% discount on each of the following seven groups: Coleoptera - Diptera - Hemiptera - Hymenoptera - Lepidoptera - Myriapoda & Arachnida

Vertebrates - Vascular plants, fungi, mosses, lichens & algae

From 2007, 4 volumes is expected to be published each year until the series is completed. At the moment the following volumes are in preparation: Diptera: Syrphidae, 400 species. Bryophyta: Acaulon - Orthodontium, 250 species. Tachinidae, 400 species. Echinodermata & Hemichordata, 80 species. Basidiemycota: Cortinariaceae: Cortinarius, 320 species. Malacostraca except Amphipoda 1, 300 species. Cortinariaceae except Cortinarius, 400 species. Myxomycetes, 200 species. Aculeata: Apidae, 300 species. Coleoptera: Cerambycidae, 120 species. Tunicata: Chondrichthyes, 80 species. Coleoptera: Carabidae, 400 species. Aculeata: Formicidae & Vespidae, 300 species. Annelida: Polychaeta 1, 350 species. Psocoptera. Osteichthyes, 230 species.

“The National Key to Swedens Flora” and Fauna is expected to be a standard work in any European university or museum dealing with natural history.

TITLE: Prime Butterflies Areas in Bulgaria

AUTHORS: Abadjiev, S Beshkov S

Pensoft Series Faunistica 69, ISSN 13120174, ISBN 9789546423047, Pensoft Publishers, Sofia-Moscow, 165x240, full-color book, richly illustrated by maps, photos of habitats and butterflies, references, with a CD, in English & Bulgarian (bilingual), 268 pp., hardback.

Price EURO 35.00

Studies of butterflies in Bulgaria have been carried out for more than 150 years. While the species distribution was more or less known, their conservation was not a special priority until recently. Previously the conservation efforts were mainly focused on a particular species (the decline of butterflies has been recognized for many years) and not on the areas which they inhabit. The main object here was to identify and describe the most important sites for butterflies in the country, implementing a simple method using target species, in order to help the definition of the Bulgarian part of the European Union's NATURA 2000 Network. Fifty NATURA 2000 sites are properly listed and described, and in this respect the book can serve as NATURA 2000 Guide for Bulgaria. The book is richly illustrated by color photos of species and habitats, maps, it includes species listings and data on conservation and protection, as well as basic GIS data on a CD. It is adressed to lepidopterologi
sts, biogeographers, conservation

Determinant of coleoptera of the Middle Volga region (part III. Polyphaga-Phytophaga). Ulyanovsk, 2007, 254 p. (in Russian) (Series "Nature
of the Ulyanovsk region", issue 14).
The book develops and presents definitive tables that can be used to identify 1,323 coleopteran species belonging to 11 families. The territory considered in the determinant covers the Chuvash Republic, the Republic of Tatarstan, the Ulyanovsk and Samara regions of Russia. This is the first time such work has been performed in this region. Based on our own research and literature sources, we have compiled a complete list of Phytophages recorded here over the past 100 years. The guide includes tables for all species of the group discovered so far in the Middle Volga region, and represents the third part of the planned three-volume edition (the first one was published in 2002).
The keys are mainly based on external morphology features, which makes it easier to work with the book without compromising its scientific value. For most species, forage plants are indicated (for some - for the first time). The book is illustrated with more than 700 drawings (190 of them are author's), grouped into 141 tables.
The publication is intended for teachers of schools and Universities, students of biological specialties, specialists and Amateur entomologists, researchers, Museum curators, heads of circles stations of young naturalists, workers of agriculture and forestry. Fig. 745, cards 1, Bibl. 226.
Reviewers: D. b.N., academician G. S. Medvedev, D. SC.n. V. A. Krivokhatsky (ZIN, St. Petersburg).
The cost is 400 rubles plus the price of shipping (cash on delivery).

So I got a parcel containing 4 books: Isaev A. Y. Determinant of coleoptera of the Middle Volga region (part III. Polyphaga-Phytophaga). Ulyanovsk, 2007, 254 p. (in Russian) (Series "Nature of the Ulyanovsk region", issue 14). What can I say? I liked the book. Unlike the first part about Adephaga, which is printed on a nasty translucent piece of paper and is nothing more than an A4 notebook, and without a cover, this one looks like a book. The paper became better, a full-fledged cover appeared, although soft. Most of the tables are really new, original, and designed from scratch. About ground beetles, most of the keys were compiled from the keys of "green" or from articles-reviews and corresponding genera. The book contains a lot of completely original drawings, among which there are also total ones made by some respected forum participantswink.gif. However, the smallness of these totals is confusing, which sometimes forces you to fit your eye convulsively to the image. Not the case. Maybe we can get a full-length view of the image. eek.gif Alexey, we deserve it, post it directly on the forum! Not without annoying typos. It immediately catches your eye that the captions under many drawings are ungodly mixed up, so for untrained entomologists it is fraught with trouble. For many species, forage plants are listed, and this significantly increases the value of the publication. The keys in the Isaevsky style are sound and intuitive, and this is good news. Oh, yes! I forgot to tell you the most important thing! Beetle families are considered as follows: leaf beetles, barbels, and of course, the most basic and most valuable - elephants, on which most of the very useful creative work was carried out. In fact, this is the only modern definition of elephants in Russian, and it is difficult to underestimate it. At least in the middle zone of Russia, I don't see an alternative publication for this group. Up-with! Katya, I'm sorry, of course, I forgot the bark beetles. They are also there, but it is difficult for me to evaluate their performance. In general, at 4+, I recommend it.

I also liked the book as a whole. Unexpectedly, I brought one Longitarsus to the species. shuffle.gif Only here the bark beetle tables are probably the least suitable for the Moscow region. I can only guess that due to the larger area of tree species in MO izvetsno 76 species, and in the book are only 52.

I will arrive in St. Petersburg on Monday. I am bringing with me several specimens of the Coleoptera Determinant of the Middle Volga region (part III. Polyphaga-Phytophaga). Who is interested-write in the personal account.

I'm holding the last one (at all!)in my hands. Volume of the Index of Insects of the Far Eastern Federal District of Russia (IV, issue 5) - Hymenoptera. Part of the braconids, all ichneumonids, Halictidae (one of the last ones written by Yu. A. Pesenko, and this is the first time that a cladogram is given in the determinants of this publication), andrenids, apids, trichogrammatids, and all horntails and sawflies. A total of 3,900 species (286 new to science).

It is a pity that this ends the release of the Determinant... But there are still a lot of things that are not included in it for butterflies-most moths, as well as dippers, limacodids and scoops. And within the framework of the determinant, they are not going to consider these families. Why, I don't know exactly, there were some rumors that this is related to funding weep.gif

No, it's definitely not related to finances. Reasons for a different plan

I hold in my hands the Index of insects of the Far Eastern Federal District of Russia (volume IV, part 1 1995). It already has andrenides and apids. There really aren't any Halictids in it. Are you right about andrenides and apides?
However, you will still have to buy it. I thought there were only riders there, so I decided not to take them. We'll have to deal with the Halictids. So thanks for the information.
