No, I was not mistaken, but we are talking about additions (although made by a very young author). The determinant is generally VERY strange in some places. Here, for example, are the dredged-winged moths: the entire family, except for one subfamily, was written by one author, and the remaining subfamily was written by another. It would seem that everything is normal, but if you read carefully, you will understand the "personal nuances": some species were "unable to divide", one describes a new genus, which the other immediately does not recognize. Or the first volume of diptera: the family Pleciidae, first on pages 121-126 (Moscow author), and then the same on pages 588-591 (St. Petersburg author). Or two options (COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!) sections by Gallic.

Bad Den
Both the editor-in-chief and the team are just tired: the series has been published for more than 20 years. Entomologists are difficult people, and sometimes very difficult. For example, in the last volume on diptera, the Zinovites refused to write a section on fleas - a local dipterologist had to do it. The underside is always not so pleasant: it is hard work to prepare such books for publication.

Of course, the most unpleasant surprise was that the keys were not given (even to the genus) of most of the moths. There are no and will not be staphylinids. Lafer did not have time to prepare all the carabids by the deadline, and it is impossible to supplement beetles in other volumes. Non-pet down eaters have completely dropped out. And much more, which, in principle, gives a reason to continue this publication.

The author nevertheless published atlases for one subfamily of moths:

Kim S.S., Beljaev E.A., Oh S.H. Illustrated Catalogue of Geometridae in Korea (Lepidoptera: Geometrinae, Ennominae) // Insects of Korea. 2001. 278 p.

Kim S.S., Beljaev E.A. Lepidoptera (Geometridae: Ennominae). Economic Insects of Korea. Suwon, 2001. 245p.

I'm holding the last one (at all!)in my hands. Volume of the Index of Insects of the Far Eastern Federal District of Russia (IV, issue 5) - Hymenoptera. Part of the braconids, all ichneumonids, Halictidae (one of the last ones written by Yu. A. Pesenko, and this is the first time that a cladogram is given in the determinants of this publication), andrenids, apids, trichogrammatids, and all horntails and sawflies. A total of 3,900 species (286 new to science).

Unfortunately, this latest volume did not close all the gaps... In the eardrums, these are quite large groups. However, the volume is 1052 s. and the weight of the volume is impressive...

There are not all ichneumonids (there are no subfamilies Cremastinae, Anomaloninae, and Ichneumoninae), and not all groups have tables, including those for bees. So for the genera Andrena, Colletes, Megachile, Nomada, and Bombus, only lists of species are given. The same pattern applies to most of the red-bellied animals (Argidae, Cimbicidae, Diprionidae, Tenthredinidae, Siricidae, Xiphydriidae (b. h.), and Cephidae.
But, you will agree, it is better to have what is now, rather than to have nothing. There are still places to put your strength, knowledge and skills. If you can, do better.
So we will wait for the reissue wink.gifof the expanded and corrected version, in about ten years
I have attached a preface

I'm afraid that the attitude to such determinants is different ...twelve years will finally "spoil". It is easier (and more honorable) for the author himself to publish a guide for his group, with good pictures, descriptions, etc. Actually, this is what many authors did: after the next volumes, full-fledged determinants (or atlases) on erect wings, bedbugs, scoops, ladybirds, etc. were published.
BPI had 3 superprojects: determinants for vascular plants, for insects, and for lower plants and mosses. The first project was completed completely. Second - read above. The third one, alas, has stalled and, most likely, will quietly "die" in 5-6 years (only 5 volumes of mushrooms were released). For such projects, you need not so much money as a quick-witted and somewhat fanatical editor-in-chief, as well as support from the management. When the determinants for insects began to come out, the director of the BPI was Lehr, a specialist in catfish. Now the situation is radically different, taxonomists are viewed differently.

PS By the way, another volume - a consolidated index of all Latin names - is supposed to be published. Maybe there will be some additions.

Definitive tables for the genera Andrena, Colletes, Megachile, and Bombus can be found in volume IV, part 1.

This volume I "did not hold in my hands" In our library it is not, and I myself do not undertake to determine the Far Eastern bees, at best I would sort out my collections...
By the way, I apologize that I didn't respond to the email .
Lists of stinging hymenoptera of Vsevolozhsk district Len.areas would be interesting for me as a comparison.

I don't think it's easier for the author to publish a guide to any particular group himself. More honorable - yes, the publication of the monograph is highly valued. The main issue is prosaic-money. Such publications are interesting to a fairly narrow group of specialists, sometimes amateur enthusiasts, they are published in very small editions, and there is a lot of editorial work there. If it is an atlas, color printing in decent quality is still very expensive.
In the Far East, in particular in the BPI, they were able to break through funding. And the organizational and editorial work itself is quite difficult, I cherish the completion of this project
, but the main problem in implementing such projects, even if there is money and the editor-in - chief is a fanatic of his business and a grip, is the lack of a sufficient number of specialists. To get to know a certain group of insects, to reach some decent level, you need many years of painstaking work. And there are quite a lot of these groups in the squad - so many entomologists, for example, simply do not exist in the Far East. Specialists from other regions are involved to process the existing fees, sometimes they have not been to the Far East at all. And this will be somewhat flawed. Not all authors work at the same level - it is one thing to compile a compilation of the works of their predecessors, and quite another -to develop your own system, create defining tables, etc.
And if they decide to publish another volume, there will always be a temptation to add something else, then another, but they always find something new, and some things just don't fit physically in the previous volumes. And it's not bad smile.gif

Storozhenko S. Yu., Pak E. Ch. Straight-winged insects (Orthoptera) Korea.
Vladivostok: Dalnauka Publ., 2007, 232 p. (in Russian)

This monograph is an overview of the fauna of Orthoptera Korea. In the general part, the study history, morphology, taxonomy, and geographical distribution of orthoptera are considered. In the special section, we present definitive tables and diagnoses of 7 superfamilies, 12 families, 29 subfamilies, 51 tribes, 106 genera, and 169 species. One new species (Glyptobothrus hallasanus) has been described. The taxonomic status of one subspecies has been upgraded to that of a species. Two species names have been combined as synonyms. Seven species are excluded from the list of right-winged birds of Korea.

The book is devoted to the organization of ground beetle communities living in the forests of two subzones of the taiga, two subzones of mixed forests and in the forest-steppe. Zonal changes in the fauna and population of these coleoptera were traced using a number of indicators. Mechanisms that allow the most numerous species to co-exist in forest biogeocenoses of different natural zones are considered.
The book is well published, in a hardcover stitched. The price of copyright copies in Moscow is 220 rubles.

Oh, where in St. Petersburg, I do not know. But I can help you in Moscow. Probably, it is worth waiting for them to be put up for free sale not today or tomorrow, but the price, of course, may increase. The circulation of both books is small, 500 copies each.

if, suddenly, someone finds out where you can, for example, buy cash on delivery, post, please!

Can you buy books at the Pet Museum or megazine? Or you need to ask directly from the Author. I would buy a second one. How do I reach the author (S. Y. Grunthal)?

Yes, yes. Very interesting about St. Petersburg. Fellow countrymen!!!! Who will buy in St. Petersburg-keep in mind. I'll give you the money right away. I'm only interested in a book about barbels.

17.04.2008 16:10, omar

Dear friends! I can buy these books for you in Moscow, for all those who are going to Moscow for a meeting of forum members, and give them to you personally. For those who can't come, I do not know what to do, but I would like to stop running to the post office. If all of a sudden, the residents of St. Petersburg decide to form up, I will, of course, send the necessary number of copies to St. Petersburg to one trusted person at the specified address. And then you can figure it out for yourself. I don't really know what to do with the money. So decide. And you, Dina, are probably interested in the book about ground beetles? We'll have to wait for Obydov's publication to come out. According to forecasts, about two months, then I will send both books at once. Nothing?
I buy books from authors, as I have already said, this is an author's edition

We are now trying to find out in Akademkniga (we couldn't find out on Friday - the car with the books came to them, they didn't have time to disassemble it yet) about the barbels. If it will be deaf there, then we will ask Roman to order for the whole of St. Petersburg (5 books like that, or so)

Please tell us if these books are available in St. Petersburg and where...

21.04.2008 12:28, Dabr

Couldn't find it in St. Petersburg. In "Akademkniga" they say that in the list of books published by the publishing house "Science" these books (barbels, at least) were not found by them, respectively, they were not ordered...therefore, we ask Roman, if possible, to provide the whole of St. Petersburg (in my opinion, this will amount to 5 books, so far-Musolin, Alex2611, Nilson, Mikepride, Dabr), and we will already pass it on to each other. mol.gif

Akademkniga - maladtsy.... fuck them.... frown.gif

And when will this meeting be held in Moscow and who is going from St. Petersburg?

And by any chance no one is coming from St. Petersburg State University or LTA?

(my problem is that I myself will not be in St. Petersburg for long in May, and I don't want to strain anyone...)

21.04.2008 16:26, entomolog

there, it seems, you need to specify how hot you are, so that you will only be paid for the transfer or transfer fee + the cost of the investment. Make no mistake! smile.gif

No.
Cash on delivery is payment only for the cost of the investment. The sender pays for the transfer in any case. Upon receiving the parcel, the recipient pays the cash on delivery amount + 6% for transferring money to the sender.

I still have my doubts... I was told otherwise, but I won't argue. If this is the case, then, of course, you still need to add the cost of shipping to the cost of the book - well, it's not for Omar to pay for his courtesy!

In general, you need to send it to Omar in such a way that you don't feel the "financial burden", and here we will "smear" all the overhead costs proportionally.

A new book has been published:

A. A. Shodotova, S. Yu. Gordeev, S. G. Rudykh et al. "LEPIDOPTERA OF Buryatia" - Novosibirsk: Publishing House of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2007, 250 p.

"The monograph presents long-term results of faunal and ecological studies of the diversity of Lepidopteran insects in Buryatia. An annotated list of 809 species from 22 families is provided. The features of geographical distribution, biotopic and altitude-landscape distribution are analyzed. For each species, the places and dates of finds, as well as information on bionomy, are given."

If you have any questions about the purchase, please contact Sergey Rudykh (rudykh@list.ru) or Gordeev Sergey Yuryevich (gordeevs07@mail.ru).

I forgot to add it.
Here, for the sender, the "pitfall" is that for the amount of the assessment (cash payment), mail takes a percentage from the sender, you need to take this into account.
