I don't know how exactly I named the topic... There was an incomprehensible situation with the work of Ménétriés, 1849. Catalogue des insectes recueillis par feu M. Lehmann avec les descriptions des nouvelles espèces. The author's name is Eduard Petrovich, and the article reads " M. Ménétriés " - both in the content and on the titles.

Is it a typo, a middle name, or a different person? On ZINA's website, the work is marked as belonging to Eduard Menetrieu.

This is short for Monsieur.

In this case, the list of references usually uses either a surname without initials, or with the name
Ménétriés E.

Which option is perfect?
1). "Ménétriés M. [i.e. Ménétriés E., monsieur]. Catalogue des insectes..."
2). "Ménétriés M. [i.e. Ménétriés E.]. Catalogue des insectes..."
3). "Ménétriés [i.e. Ménétriés E.]. Catalogue des insectes..."
4). "Ménétriés [E.]. Catalogue des insectes..."

I looked at a few books. Everything is different, but not in the same way as you suggested.
It may not be necessary to add square brackets, although I like the last option.

The surname is correctly spelled with a backward "accent" in the last letter: Ménétriès. In the list of references, the word "monsignor" should not be written - it also means "Catalog...Mr. Menetrieu". I.e. 3 and 4 options are correct,

You should probably put this in a separate topic, here the message risks going unnoticed
