In one book about insects, they write about the swallowtail: "The flight of this butterfly can be compared to the proud soaring of an eagle. The swallowtail does not seem to be in a hurry, showing off all the splendor of its black and yellow wings... " etc. Anyone who tried to photograph the swallowtail in the summer is unlikely to agree with this. "Proud soaring" is more about podaliriya. The swallowtail rushes swiftly and loops from flower to flower, never stopping anywhere for a long time and leaving no chance to bring the camera lens closer for a high-quality picture.

Calmly photographed these butterflies managed in April, when they just emerged from pupae in the pine part of the park behind the lake. It was still chilly in April, and the butterflies were basking in the spring sun on the paths.

There are few flowering plants in the park at this time, so large sailboats fed on the nectar of small yasnotka flowers. Swallowtails could not sit on the flower, it bent under the weight of butterflies, so they drank nectar on the fly, like hawkmoth.

Of course, the swallowtail does not have such a proboscis as the hawk moth, nor its "motor". At first, the butterfly tried to sit on the ash tree. The flower fell to the ground, and the swallowtail was left with nothing. Then the butterfly adapted. She only held the flower with her paws, without stopping working with her wings, and drank nectar. It was during this activity that I was photographed.

Moscow region, Ramenskiy district, near the village of Khripan (a clearing under a power line). This summer there was just a huge number of swallowtails, on some days it was possible to observe the flight of more than 20 pieces within an hour. Such an abundance of butterflies allowed me to take about 200 shots: on vacation, during feeding and mating, as well as butterfly caterpillars.

Everything is there. Just in its natural form, these edges of the hind wings with orange spots are bent to the belly of the butterfly. Take a good look at the photo!

Pay attention to the characteristic burgundy trichoma hairs along the vein to which the caterpillar's head is turned. This is a sufficient condition.
Or do you need more necessary ones? wink.gif

You can laugh, entomologist friends, but probably only you can understand my feelings! Today, for the first time in 22 years, I saw a Swallowtail live in our city of Stary Oskol, Belgorod region,it was a miracle just for me!!
I didn't expect this and didn't believe that we have such a miracle)I was in shock for about 5 minutes,he so smoothly flew past me and went high into the treetops. I will now hunt for him and his caterpillars)

After all, I now have several swallowtails of my native region. In the summer of 2011 in our Belgorod region (Art.Oskol, Gubkin) was a mass production of swallowtails. Before that, I met one individual in 2008. They flew around the city as if there was nothing to do, but they were fast and agile. Then I was without a net, then I covered the flower bed with a net, and he either left through the bottom. Then, while digging up potatoes in Gubkin, 3 pieces also dodged. I was already in a panic. But after examining the dill in the garden I found about 10 caterpillars and only then brought out the perfect swallowtails)

I read the topic and remembered that there are swallowtail pupae in the refrigerator under the window.Next week will be warmer weather...it is necessary to transfer to a real refrigerator, hold out until spring and release in the country.Where they were collected. In the north of Moscow region.
And Apollo eggs in the country house in the basement. The main thing is that the sediment would rise on time!I'll try to feed them.

And where can I get Apollo eggs? According to reference books, Apollo is rare, but it is found in Meshchera, cleanings grow-caustic, prominent (and on my site), but I haven't had to meet a butterfly or caterpillars yet.

Catch a female and milk her, but don't poke around in the soil. Apollo near you is the largest in the population of Kovrov-Sudogodsky districts.

That's right!
Read the forum carefully and see Apollo, take a picture and catch a couple of copies without any problems.Yes, and Meshchera is a stretchable concept...

Dear forumchane, aren't you surprised by such an immensely large number of described subspecies of the swallowtail? Most of them seem to be "fake". I can give you an example that is perfectly described by Kreutzberg in his work:
Kreutzberg A.V.-A., Danov R. A. Sailfish fauna (Lepidoptera, Papilionidae) Rastitel'nost ' i zhivotnyj mir Zapadnogo Kopetdag [Vegetation and animal world of Western Kopetdag]. Ashgabat: "Ylym" Publ., 1985, pp. 249-261.
In Turkmenistan, as in other places of Central Asia, all individuals of the second generation (not all descendants of the first generation come out in the summer) belong to the form centralis Stgr. However, the individuals of the first (spring) generation are practically indistinguishable from the individuals common in the middle zone; the subspecies weidenhofferi Seyer was described from them from the Kopetdag Mountains. I myself have repeatedly caught spring weidenhofferi Seyer and then summer centralis Stgr in the same places of the Central Kopetdag. Are these subspecies?

I agree 100%. Spring swallowtails from Kyrgyzstan also do not differ from Turkmen ones.

I do not know how true this is, but the author of the subspecies P. m. syriacus is considered to be Eller. “Papilio machaon syriacus” Eller, K. 1936 (Die Rassen von Papilio machaon L. – Abh. bayer. Akad. Wiss., N.F., 36: 61, 87). Type locality: Lebanon. Standard material: in ZSSM. Hesselbart argues for this by referring to an article in the code.

Very likely, if Verity, in his own way, had fixed the name as a quadrinomain. Then, according to the Code, the first person to apply the name in a trinomain or binomain, or in any other way to change the status of a taxon from infraspecific to subspecific or specific, receives its authorship.
