I have pupated a swallowtail caterpillar what to do

Put a wet cloth in the box with the pupa every 3 (or even 2) days so that the pupa does not dry out.

please tell me how to distinguish a female swallowtail from a male wall.gif

at the end of the male's abdomen, such a device looks like the flaps of a mollusk, for example, Anodonta, something like this wink.gif
and the female, in my opinion, smells sweet

Oh, so it turns out that I wasn't the only one who noticed that the Swallowtail smells, and very well (which can't be said about its caterpillar when it's defending itself)! smile.gif My swallowtail hatched on Monday, and it also smelled nice. This is the third time I've smelled this in my entire life.
I would like to know the formula of the substance that it smells of-perfume can be made.

And it's tempting to say as the cat Matroskin said in that cartoon: 3-4 generations!? This is overkill... Are there ANY SPECIAL studies in your area on this species!??
I didn't try to find the swallowtail caterpillars in the sagebrush, but I didn't find them ... Here we are clearly dealing with diapauses of swallowtail butterflies emerging from their pupae... they will obviously overlap with later ones - and this is a fantastic result.

02.09.2013 16:54, гук

As far as I know, "SPECIAL research in our region on this species" has not been conducted, and who needs it?
There is such data. Daily observations from March to October in the area of Golubinsky sands for three seasons. The period between the beginning of summer of the first and second generations is on average 40-45 days, the second and third generations have slightly less, the same 40-45 days between the peaks of population. The results were very similar for other common species there: erate, myrmidon, terzamon, maracandica, idas, and icarus. The same data is available for other points in the south of the region. And nothing "fantastic".

Related: yesterday I saw a very fresh swallowtail! Clearly the third generation! First time I saw it!
Krasnodar Krai, Yeisk raion

and we have the first snowfall on September 28... what is the third generation here???

And on September 29, I saw a couple of swallowtails in the village of Kazatsky in Kherson region.
And this is despite the fact that September turned out to be colder than usual for us.

Does anyone happen to know what kind of work these observations are from:

An interesting fact was described by the Azerbaijani entomologist R. M. E. Effendi. Of the 100 swallowtail pupae he collected at the end of April, butterflies came out in portions — in early May, in July, in the second half of August - the most "stubborn" wintered a second time and gave butterflies only in April of the following year. Probably, such super pauses in development are an adaptation to the unstable climate of Absheron with its unexpected cold snap. Usually, the autumn cold weather destroys both butterflies and caterpillars that have not had time to complete their development.

Does anyone have an electronic version of this article:
Kreutzberg A.V.-A., Danov R. A. Fauna of sailboats (Lepidoptera, Papilionidae) Rastitel'nost ' i zhivotnyj mir Zapadnogo Kopetdag [Vegetation and animal world of Western Kopetdag]. Ashgabat: "Ylym" Publ., 1985, pp. 249-261.

What can you recommend from other publications on swallowtail and podaliriya?

Papilio machaon (Linnaeus, 1758)is a diurnal butterfly in the family Papilionidae.
Sev.America, Idaho

Only you do not have a swallowtail in the photo, but rather Papilio (Pterous) glaucus Linnaeus, 1758
Although there is a swallowtail in the USA and Canada wink.gif
Good site on American butterflies: http://butterfliesofamerica.com/ I recommend.

This is more likely Papilio (pterosus) rutulus. P. glaucus - eastern, P. rutulus-western; they differ poorly in appearance, but geography helps here.

Last summer on the White River (near the Shalkeev cordon, see the story - http://coleop123.narod.ru/krrbela1.html) in July, it was possible to observe a mass exit of swallowtails. Well, what is not the tropics? In this area, the main place of recreation is zhabritsa Poreznikovaya.
It is completely unclear why some respected researchers include this species in their regional CC!??

But what if a species gives an outbreak of mass reproduction, then it is no longer worthy?
The swallowtail is a beautiful, well-distinguishable insect species. Ecosystem status indicator. And the fact that you have it gives such a number is great!

Last year I chased swallowtails for a long time and still could not get decent photos, so I decided to grow them myself from caterpillars. I took two caterpillars home. One butterfly hatched in 8 days after pupation, the other - in 10. The first one was bred with a wing defect, so I'll post a photo of the second one here.

20.08.2013-release date
A caterpillar was assembled at the end of the park (near the hydroelectric power station) in N. Kakhovka.

Sakhalin swallowtails bred from eggs taken from a female in the vicinity of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk were hatched during the New Year holidays. In my opinion, very contrasting and beautiful. The photo shows a female, the males were not removed, they are lemon-yellow. You can clearly see how the subspecies differs from the photo above from the middle band...

It's no secret that the Swallowtail, depending on its habitat, has differences in color that are hardly distinguishable to an ordinary layman. Since I have seen both the central part of Russia and the Far Eastern Swallowtail, here are 100 % reliable real photos of Swallowtails : European, Kamchatka and British Swallowtails:

Hello!

I have three swallowtail pupae. They have been hanging since August,so there is humidity due to a wet cotton pad.Two pupae are definitely showing signs of life. But none of them show up. The apartment is not hot, but also not cold, I want to put them in the refrigerator.Or enough room temperature.
How to organize winter quarters!?

06.11.2021 21:26, Sergey Rybalkin

Definitely in the refrigerator, they need diapause. After the new year, take it out of the refrigerator and you will be happy!

07.11.2021 11:47, ИНО

And how do they manage without it in the first 1-2 generations?
