I didn't think they were still flying in Africa, I thought only in the South-In Asia.

29.02.2008 21:27, Pavel Morozov

Well, and of course, the Far Eastern Brahmaea tancrei (or still, certhia?)
Primorsky Krai, Ussuriysky district, Kaimanovka

Please clarify the situation with the taxa certhia and tancrei mol.gif

There are at least a couple of species in Africa

An immodest question: does anyone have B. ledereri?

01.03.2008 14:09, igorbiol гость

One specimen was seen by B. ledereri in the St. Petersburg Zoo Museum. and they said that this species
was not caught for a hundred years.Mr. Plyushch from Kiev - - - 10 years old.
The most interesting thing is that they say there is a work from Iran, which proves that the species
B. ledereri and B. christophi are actually one species.

01.03.2008 17:35, Hemaris

There are at least 4 Dactylocera species flying in Africa. Brahmaea certhia and tancrei are two different species, they look like twin species, but the caterpillars are significantly different.

Yes, I was told about Lederi and Kristofi that they found butterflies in a gap in their range, and now they are definitely one species..

And not a secret, where exactly?

01.03.2008 23:00, Grigory Grigoryev

Here, I found on the Internet an article by Josefa J de Freina about these brahms. Unfortunately, it is written in German, but the meaning is clear that he reduced everything to Brahmaea ledereri with subspecies.

"I am ready to work hard for the benefit of the forum and translate from German to Russian"

In fact, you don't need to translate everything, only the most important things that relate to the rationale for reducing taxa to a single species.

The article is titled "New population of B. ledereri in Turkish Kurdistan as evidence of conspecificity of ledereri and christophi".
Briefly, the key points.
The author describes a new subspecies Brahmaea ledereri zaba.
Holotype from Turkish Kurdistan, Hakkari province, Zab Tal, 30 km south of Hakkari, 1200-1300 m, 03-13. 06. 1981. Leg De Freina, coll Witt.
Judging by the text, the author justifies his opinion by the features of the drawing.
Forewing: length 55 mm, ground background matte dark brown, darker than ledereri and christophi. The basal part of the wing is similar to ledereri. Relative to the pattern, the wavy lines are less numerous and not as well defined towards the leading edge. The median sash is broad, like that of christophi, while that of ledereri is narrowed and even interrupted in some specimens.
Hindwing: Basal part of the same width as in ledereri, but nevertheless with a light band like in christophi.

Something like that. I apologize for some clumsiness in the translation.

Dear forumchane! I offer you a selection of photos of butterflies of the Brahmaeidae family from my own collection.
Unfortunately, there is very little information about this group, so I hope this selection will help you understand the diversity of the world's brahmins. If someone also has photos of these butterflies, please post them! Perhaps, in this way, we will collect at least some small "determinant".

I take it from the pattern in the basal part of the hind wings? There don't seem to be any more special differences, if you don't compare males)

If you haven't noticed the elephantsmile.gif, pay attention to the top of the front wings... roughly speaking, "check marks" in different directions!
