For the first time, I was able to see an amazing picture: attempts to mate males of Phyllobius pyri with females of Byctiscus betulae. This is not a mating of different species and even genera, like weevils, but representatives of different families!!! Within a few hours, I found three such "pairs", and two of them with an interval of several minutes and at a distance of one and a half dozen meters. Photos of these two "couples" and present to the audience. Taken on June 10, 2010 in the Novoalekseyevka area of the Pereslavsky district of the Yaroslavl region.

I have two more questions.
1. I followed the links here and found out how Pirx in his book "Chestnut moth and its control in the Donetsk region" claims that measures to control this pest are mechanical cleaning of fallen leaves and toxic chemicals. As a Russian, I am worried about what is happening in our fraternal country. I would like to ask: if Ukraine was occupied, as Pirx writes, by this moth, then it is unlikely that it will be afraid of a janitor with a broom. Why not set someone on it to eat it instinctively and happily? Does the moth have no natural enemies (besides the city man, and without the chestnut moth burdened with all sorts of problems)?
2. In the picture where the female xysticus eats the unfortunate orange-bellied creature (?), there is another person involved — a fly. And in my other picture, where mizumena eats a bee, there is also a fly. The flies are small, and I noticed them only when I was looking at the finished pictures. Is this a coincidence, or is it true that there are flies in nature that are companions of spiders?

1. This is not a book, but a booklet-a compilation for information. Repeating the statement that the main measure of moth control is leaf harvesting, I also wrote about the proven chemical control measures mentioned in the literature. I can only add that neither the first nor the second will save chestnuts, and, first of all, because of their impracticability in real life. In addition, having observed the moth for three years now in Donetsk, I became convinced that cleaning the foliage is not a panacea at all, and therefore a waste of energy. As a person involved in plant protection, I treat the chemical method with great humor. As for the natural enemies of moths, they are not enough, but many research teams are looking for them. My opinion is very banal-the harm (forgive G-spody) from moths is greatly exaggerated, you don't need to do anything chemically, first of all you need to feed and water the trees, mechanically remove those rare chestnuts that have died, wait for balance. We will find a balance, we must wait for it.
2. And there are such flies, apparently. And spider parasites are not uncommon among flies...

14.06.2011 10:24, Анфим

Thank you.
This fly, which was attached to the dead bee, was thick-bellied and with a purple tint; here is its best picture.
And I was also interested in a fly with a white belly, which I saw pestering the May crunch; I also attach a photo of it. Is it true that the fly laid an egg or larva on the crunch? On the back of the left leg of the crunch, something green is noticeable... Can this be the case? What taxon does this fly belong to?

I would say that the fly eats sweets on the bee... don't waste the same good...
and in the second picture, behind the "leg", the background of leaves is visible...
and the fly seems to be "autonomous" from the beetle, sitting on a leaf...

Well, of course. Here is a fly definitely climbs on the crunch. But he jerked and shooed it away, but something else is green against the leaf.

apparently, even Khrushchev didn't like it...
in the image 7711, the oval spot is the end of the shoot, which is also visible in 7708.
On the "legs" of the crunch there are no green spots and even more so the eggs of any insects.
(and by the way, these are other pictures)

How would you comment on these pictures? Will you say that bedbugs, like flies, sit on everything and everything? But no, bedbugs are not like flies, they are like people: they also just want to communicate, and not necessarily just eat everything and everything immediately. From the behavior of the bug, it is clear that the beetle interests him precisely as an animate creature, which you can shake hands with or drink a beer with, or chat about the secrets of the universe. You can not reduce everything to the level of "saw-ate"!

Personally, I concluded from this observation that nabis does not feed on weevils (at least of this species). Because he came up, felt it, and walked away.
But for some reason he needed it!
So the Nabis have a soul. Which asks for something. Communication there, love, recognition...

For Anfim
"...concluded that nabis does not feed on weevils (at least of this species)."

Once, at the beginning of a hungry April 2008, I decided to feed staphylin the magnificent.
It was only possible to catch some mummified bedbug. Unfortunately for Staf, the bug
turned out to be quite large and very hungry. At the first convergence of the "sides" -
an instantaneous injection – I didn't even have time to blink. The bug was deposited. Staphylin didn't even live an hour.
Question. Does this bug feed on staphylins of this species...?

One more question. What species does Cantharis livida feed on? Immediately the answer is-eats everything in a row…

There is no sadder story in the world than the story of two Altai nomions.
They flew over the Altai meadows, indulging in love joys. And it was already coming to an end, the male almost formed a chastity belt at the end of her abdomen, but then the couple suffered a misfortune in the form of an insectivorous bird. It was not difficult for the feathered bird to catch up with the clumsily fluttering tandem and grab its larger half - the male. However, the bird was unlucky - the contact between the two bellies held together by sphragis turned out to be stronger than the joint between the belly and the chest of the cavalier, as a result of which the feathered bird got a breast with wings, and the most nutritious part of the male - the abdomen - flew further on the shocked female. However, it is correct to say that trouble does not come alone. The lady soon found her doom, too, in the large muslin bag of an entomologist who had just arrived in the area and was "mowing down" all the nomions in a row in the vain hope, as it turned out, of finding Parnassius Ariadne among them. So, the female was not destined to outlive her lover much. weep.gif
