Butterflies and other insects of Peru

Алексей Яковлев, 31.08.2008 22:45

I returned from Peru and started sorting out 9 GB of photos. I photographed mainly plants, but it is impossible to visit Peru and not take a picture of a single butterfly. True, my companion had the goal of catching them, and I also wielded a net. So I'm sorry that I didn't get enough photos. In addition, many butterflies do not sit down to pose at all. Others are so valuable that I would have been lynched by a comrade for any delay in taking photos. smile.gif

You can talk about Peru indefinitely - so great is the diversity of its biotopes, isolated both by altitude and climate. Literally on one mountain, you can get around a dozen bio-communities that have nothing in common in half a day! There are, of course, pan-Peruvian species, but you also come across narrow-range endemics.

If anyone is also interested in tops, check out my posts from nerds. I will post all other animals and medical aspects of my stay in Peru on my blog until winter

There were a lot of butterflies, and this is in the " dry " (August) season! What will happen in September, we can only guess!!!

Butterflies were caught in this way, with a net, and on salt washings along the banks of rivers, and on traps (fermented fruits). They did not catch only at the light, because there was originally no such goal.

We visited 3 places in the Amazon-the Tambopata nature reserve in the south-east, the area 2 hours from Iquitos by boat on the Amazon (this is already the north) and Tingo Maria in the central part of the country, where the Andes already begin, but the mountains to the peaks are covered with cloud forests.

I will post pictures as I analyze them. Since I am not an expert, and my friend will determine the fees only by spring, please do not judge strictly in case of incorrect definition of species (however, I will be grateful for corrections).

All together we crush lybalol.gif :

So, let's go!

I'll start with Tambopata. This river in southeastern Peru flows through 4 well-defined bioclimatic zones, from humid temperature to humid tropical.

Tambopat is terribly wet, doesn't dry a damn thing, but it's relatively safe in terms of infections (no malaria, no yellow fever, no leishmania), but there are chiggers - small-boned red-bodied mites whose larvae deftly penetrate the pores of sneakers and socks and bite your feet so that it's scary to look at them later. At the same time, bites itch for another month. There are practically no mosquitoes there, there are not many mosquitoes (but the repellent still does not hurt).

You can live coolly right on the territory of the reserve in lodges with solar panels (220 there, clear-red, will not be, but hot water and dim light at night are provided), in addition-fresh air and comfort and feed for slaughter (and most importantly, very healthy food with an abundance of local fruits)! smile.gif
picture: ________________.jpg

However, I also had to live in a tent on such a bank (here the Malinovsky River flows into Tambopata).
picture: Tambopata_Malinowsky_river.jpg

And here I am, holding a net in one hand and a fallen cecropia leaf in the other. The lord of the selva is downright amazing. smile.gif
image: _. jpg

This is pepino (Solanum muricatum). It turned out that this is the best place to attract morpho! Pepino has the taste of melon, although it belongs to the solanaceae. For more success, soak in any inexpensive wine. On bynany morfo so were not conducted.

Well, now let's go bybochki:

Pierella lamia chalybaea almost without pattern

картинка: Pierella_lena_brasiliensis_Tambopata.jpg
Pierella lena brasiliensis immediately on the leaves and you will not notice, especially such a flying one.

All butterflies of this group are strictly territorial, flying back and forth in one area along a path, or in a place cleared in the forest. If you left for the first time, you need to return in 2 minutes - it will again sit in the same place. They are caught from 8: 00 to 14: 00. Cyterias are relatively easy to spot by their crimson-pink spots, but the hetaera is easily lost among the fallen foliage.

With the Peruvian abundance and the presence of a camera, you can fill up the whole world with pictures smile.gif

We didn't catch them at night. During the day, we were terribly tired, especially in such remote places (like cars) it couldn't be, and they were afraid of bloodsuckers... But it's a pity, of course!!! Even in the dim light of the lodge lamps, hawk moth and saturnia flew!!!

Bugs in Peru, as you can guess, are sooo many, but not all of them are in a hurry for the photo smile.gifI still took a few photos, maybe when I sort it out, I'll post it.
I was particularly impressed by the beetle collection in Tingo Maria, where they are professionally trained. The ubiquitous Japanese come there and buy everything!!! I even saw collections of staphylins prepared for sale (and who needs these dozens of species of apparently indistinguishable insects, except for the Japanese!smile.gif). For some endemic rhinos, they ask for 500-600 pupaars. They are caught by local peasants (only the lazy ones are not in businesssmile.gif), and you can also buy them for a song if you have a business acumen (for 100 bucks they will catch all living things with the whole family for a month (an average of 7-10 people)).

I'm sorry - this is a somewhat off-topic question. how did you communicate with the local population? How different is "Peruvian Spanish" from "Spanish"?

01.09.2008 16:20, RippeR

This is something! Especially ridionides!

Quite likely...

I'm sorry - this is a somewhat off-topic question. how did you communicate with the local population? How different is "Peruvian Spanish" from "Spanish"?

Peruvian Spanish is the most classic of all Spanish dialects! But I don't know smile.gifhim because I've spoken English everywhere. And to communicate with the peasants in Tingo Maria, a 16-year-old boy was hired as a guide.

A lot of them, but mostly small and not very bright, so we didn't catch much of them. They took only bright-colored smile.gifones, but I still took a few photos. I will analyze and post it smile.gif

We move on to the Iquitos area. Amazon itself has already gone here. The humidity is killer!!! Linen does not dry at all, and if you wash it and hang it out in the sun - on the 3rd day it just goes bad (everyone smells like that). The only way is to dry it on yourself (besides, it's dangerous to hang it out in terms of miasma-who doesn't know, read here
Were bitten by wasps, which always lurk among harmless sweat bees, spiders, I personally suffered from a kiss bug (still a spot under my eye). There are almost no mosquitoes, there are few mosquitoes.

The abundance of exotic fruits greatly brightens up your life. Piranhas and catfish fishing are also available at your leisure.

I would like to express my special gratitude to the friendly guys from the neighboring villages of Freddy and Limber.

Yeah! Even adventitious views don't match! wink.gif

And the clouds, by the way, are also not all alike: there they have the Magellanic clouds and the gorgeous Milky Way at night + because of the perfectly clear atmosphere, all the stars are in the palm of your hand - luxury! You realize the greatness of being... Especially when there are still fireflies, frogs and crickets dancing around, birds there are all sorts of nocturnal, caimans again splash their tails, fried piranha is digested in the stomach with bananas (also traditionally fried)... wink.gif
